Fuller, who are working, on the state highway near Payson, came down fo Nephi Saturday afternoon with a supply of "Moonshine" but before they had a chance to dispose of the stuff they were taken in by the officers here and brought before Judge John S. Cooper, Saturday evening. Taylor pleaded guilty to the charge and Judge Cooper fined him $200 and confiscated his car and all the dropped from any further consideration in the Gooseberry Irrigation Project, on account of their being insufficient water to make it feasible to extend the pro ject to this valley. This in substance is the report of the engineers George D. Clyde, and L. M. Winsor of the Utah Agricultural College of Utah. wnue accurate water - measurements were not available, this point was arrived at from several definite angles that the total maximum run off from the drainage area above the canal would' be 640,450 acre feet This would require a feeder canal of seventy miles in length, from the head of Manti Canyon at an elevation of 9,300 feet and ending at the proposed reservoir site in Upper Gooseberry east of Fairview at 9,000 feet elevation. The reports estimates that this project would cost from six to twelve million dollars, making a water cost of one hundred to two hundred dollars per acre foot. It was therefore concluded by those present at the meeting held recently to these reports that the big project be dropped. It was decided later to organize a Sanpete Water User's Association aa there was not sufficint water to take care of Juab County. This was done with. Burns Cox of Fairview as chair man of the association. SMITH OUTLINES PLANS V Greater Gooseberry Irrigation Project Abandoned Sanpete County Only One Now Interested. been : FINED FROM PROJECT Juab Valley has The News, Vol 8, No. 37 Nephi, Juab County, Utah, . Iriday, Sept. 12th, 1924 A very successful teachers institute was held in the High School Auditorium Saturday with practically all the teaching force of the district present. Two sessions were held one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. At the morning session . Supt. Calvin Smith delivered a very afcle address on the policy to be followed the coming school year, and outlined what he thought should be the objectives of every teacher. Eighty five per cent of all the stu dents who pass out of the high school never attend college said Supt. Smith hence the problem for the rural districts was to provide the right kind of education for this large group that would fit them for the battle of life. This could be done by paying greater attention to the vocat ional part of the students education. The value of good reading and thinking should be also emphasized. "Students should be taught to have an Interest In the home and its sur roundings" said the speaker. Another point that should be stres sed according to the remarks of Supt. Smith, is that of civic responsibility. Boys and girls should be trained to serve the community in which they live, and to be producers. Profitable use of leisure time was another subject takn up ' at some Dancing length by Supt. Smith. should not be allowed to occupy all the leisure time of the student, other forma; of recreatio.n should be encouraged by the teachers said the speaker. The etblcal character of the stu- dents should be developed. We should dducate real men and women who have character, for without the de velopment sl. character ' education- " ' has failed. ' Ja closing the speaker urged the teachers to exercise a spirit of cooperation, and to justify their position in the community. The welfare of the boys and girls should be their first thought and sentiment should t not stand in the way if it retarded the educational growth of the students. Teachers have the biggest job in the community and the training and character of the future citizenship of this district is largely in your hands said Supt. Smith in conclusion. Principal Alonzo Ingram was the next speaker and gave some good advice to teachers emphasing the need of preparation in their work.
