This tax mortgage is a prior lien to the other mortgages. It encum bers the property which is free from other debts and it is an additional burden to the property covered with other debts. This statement is very easily A fair conservative valuproved. ation of the property in the United States is $260,000,000,000.00. The annual taxes, national, state and local, are approximately $8,500,000 000.00. A mortgage of 65 per cent of the value of 260 billion dollars would be 170 billion dollars. Interest at 5 per cent on the 170 billion dollars mortgage would be $3,500, 000,000.00 exactly the same as the taxes paid annually. All consumers pay taxes in the form of higher rents or highers prices for food, clothing and luxuries. Owners of bonds are the ones who escape taxation. The big 65 per cent tax mortgages rests on the shoulders of all the rest of us. That mortgage is growing heavier every year. The general burden of national state and local taxation has increased 134 per cent more than doubled since 1912. Farm taxes have increas ed 126 per cent since 1914. bonds have not paid one cent of Poets rhyme about the "smiling' country in the month of May.' There is but one brood a year. It has been found that these eggs may be prevented from hatching by a spray of miscible oil just as the buds are bursting. From data now being compiled on tests carried on by the Experiment Station this spring it is evident that a spray applied after the tips of the buds show green is better than one applied be fore they begin to open. It is also apparent that thorough spraying, covering all small limbs on all sides, is essential for success. It would also seem that spraying may best be done from the ground with a spray gun at a high pressure. Where trees have been well covered, good control has usually been obtained with most of the commercial miscible oils, such as Dormoil, Dormant-solubloil, Scale- proof, Target Brand, etc. In cases of very severe infestation a poison spray of double strength arsenate of lead (8 to 10 pounds of powder per 100 gallons of water) ap plied when the buds show pink is a This good supplementary measure. poison spray will also help if combined with calyx spray for codling moth. OITT Gt. APPLE PEST MAI MiRKlT W. One of the most serious pests that apple growers have to contend with at the present time is the fruit-treIt is not a new pest in Utah, for it has been known in Boxelder county for years. It is a more recent pest, however, in Davis, Salt Lake, Cache, Utah and Juab counties. This leaf roller passes the winter as an egg in patches on the limbs and twigs of its host plant. The egg begins to hatch soon after the buds burst and the small caterpillar feeds on the young leaves, tying them to gether with silk and eating out the developing buds. When full grown the caterpillar is a pale green or yel low with a black head and with black patch just back of the head. At this time it eats holes in the young fruit, rolls up the edge of the leaf, fastens it with silk thus making retreat in which to conceal Itself, and prepares for its transformation to small moth.
