COUNTY UNDULY When someone asked Mark Twain which was his (avorlte of all .his books he had written It took him Just about half a second to answer AL- - ' ARMKD In the last issue of the Delta Chro nicle, the editor of that esteemed Journal sems to be very much alarmed over the prospect that Juab Val ley may get some of the water from the Sevier River Dam, and affects to believe that if the Levan Ridge should obtain any of this water it would almost constitute a steal. Here is what he says. "What did Levan Ridge or Juab County ever do with Sevier Bridge Reservoir water, dam, or rights, to make that water valuable? To take that water away from a region where thousands of acres are now crying for 'more and more water? Why are we asleep while negotiations go on to take out of the Big Dam water for region than our own?" "We voice the sentiment of many when we protest against letting surplus water rights be taken from Millard County, which were gotten here, developed here, and belong here That water should go to the bench lands of Millard County. Fillmore and Delta should arise solidly and op pose any attempt to place that water elsewhere." "It appeals to Fillmore in that that every drop of water is needed to supply the needs of Greenwood, Cedar Mountain, and McCornick, they shou Id not nod while this is being stolen from them?" Calm yourself Bro. Beckwith, Juab County nor the Levan Ridge farmers dont intend to steal any of the water from the Sevier River Dam. Men who claimed to own a certain amount of the water stored in that dam put a proposition up to the farmers here for the purchase of these water rights at $37.50 per acre foot at the A meeting was held here in dam. Nephi, and a committee appointed to Investigate the matter, but the opinion was expressed at this meeting that the water was too high for the farmers here to handle, but in case they did decide to buy, we cannot for the life of us see how they would be stealing the water, if the men who sold were the legitimate owners of the water, and the farmers of Millard County would not purchase it, so we say again, Bro. Beckwith dont get excited over the question, that would be nothing less than a straight business deal, if the farmers of this valley decided to purchase the water that is for sale in the Sevier River Dam. Professor Stewart bfigan the survey in the summer of 1918 and concluded it at the close of the teason of 1919 having visited nearly 3,000 grain fields covering practically every county in the varities of wheat State. Twenty-fou- r were found growing in the State and practically every field showed eviden-ces of being mixed. The details of the survey has been published as Station bulletin 174 entitled "A Variey Survey and Descrip tive Key of Small Grains in Utah" and contains a number of practical recommendations as to methods by which this enormous annual loss may be reduced to the minimum which any farmer can follow. In addition to the loss by dockage, says Prdf. Stewart, other large losses are sustained which are very evident but hot so easily calcuated. In several varities are being grown together or even in the same community it is very evident that one is a better yielder than the others and one is, therefore, losing by growing an inferior wheat. The different varieties do not ripen at the same time and as a result, says Prof. Stewart, another large loss Is sustained through the over-rip- e varities shattering the under-rip- e shrinking. Cfclca n hundred thousand dollars is a very conservative estimate of the loss sustained by the grain growers of Utah every year on account of growing mixed varieties of the small grains, according to Professor Geo rge Stewart in charge of Field Crop Investigations for the Utah Agricul tural Experiment Station. This loss became very evident and was easily calculated following the enactment of the Grain Standard. Act. The total number of cars graded, bushels in each car, the average dockaee and the annual grain crop of the Mate were the factors used in arriving at the loss which the farmers were sustaining. Immediately following the disclosure of this enormous loss, the Utah Experiment Station authorized Prof, fessor Stewart to make a variety survey of the small grains grown in the State with a view of determining i I differences In your car.
