We want you to look ac- give you any help, advice upon this hank as your BEST BUSINESS FRIEND We A prominent farmer of this city in afspeaking of the opportunities forded by this section told a representative of this paper that Idaho nor any other state had any charms for hiin as long as there were so many chances open here for progress and the acquirement of wealth. He then told us of the many good openings that were offered at the present time within a radious of twenty miles of this city which could be turned into profitable investments by the installation of pumping plants to supply irrigation water, and that this met hod of getting water will some day revolutionize the agricultural deveop-men- t of this valley. We agree with the predictions of this farmer. This paper believes that Juab Valley has hardly been touched yet to what it will be in the not far distant future. We believe that the man who sticks, and makes the best of the wonder ful opportunities afforded in this valley will come out on top. Opportunity is at our doors, are we going to grasp it? FOR THE WEST Summarizing the reports from trade publications of the sugar industry, only one conclusion can be drawn and that is that there will be a continued shortage of sugar. Late reports from Germany forecast a smaller sugar beet crop than domestic needs require, instead of a large surplus which Germany used to export. Coupled with decreased production is an increased demand, not to mention our own domestic requirements which it is estimated will surpass all previous records. The advantages to be derived from this situation by western sugar beet producers and manufacturers are numerous but chief among them is the opportunity to bring beet production per acre to the highest point while prices are high and risk from short crop at a minimum. Oa the part of the manufacturer it gives him an opportunity to establish trade connection which should prove of lasting value and establish our west ern sugar industry on a solid founda tion to meet future competition. Taken as a whole the west should profit by the present sugar situation in the way of increased agricultural development and industrial activity. in foreign countries THE HOME PAPER Why is it that the country paper has such a big hold on its readers? Because the home paper tells them about the comings and goings of Light showers fell over the western portion of the State, moderate showers over the eastern portion, and heavy rains In the mountain districts, and with temperatures lower toward the close, the week's weather was rather favorable as a rule, especially where irrigation water continues ample. However, it is becoming dry again over the southwestern counties and rain is greatly neded generally over the western winter grazing areas. The summer and autumn ranges have been much improved by the week's precipitation and livestock generally are reported to be in fairly good shape. The second cutting of alfalfa is from one-ha- lf to entirely harvested, being in a stage too advanced to receive much benefit from the showers; the first crop at the higher altitudes has proven fairly satisfactory. Grain crops generally are being harvested where not already gather ed, and fall grain is being thrashed; spring wheat in the Sanpete valley is filling fairly well where watered, but it is shrinking in Heaver county. The silo corn was greatly helped by the week's rain generally, and it is ready to cut in Cache valley; it is not generally making grain, and' cannot recover in Iron county from the drought. Early peaches are ripening rather generally though the fruit is small; and early apples are fairly good though there is considerable dropping in places. Cantaloupes are ripe at Moab. Potatoes generally have not improved greatly since the rains, and they continue rather poor; in Emery t county the tubers have not began to set heavily yet. Beets have made good progress as a rule, and in most fields water continues ample. Sugar beet seed in the Cache valley is nearly ripe; and alfalfa seed in Milard county continues to set well. Copius and timely rains have vis ited San Juan county, particularly about La Sal: and some flood water have been coming out of the moun tains in that general region, and at Moab; and on the Kaibab National Forest, northern Arizona, the roads have been badly damaged, though the fire hazard has been much lessened. The observer at Oakley, Idaho ahead of the normal stage at this time of the year. J. Cecil Alter, Meteorologist. A report on "Home Service" of the American Red Cross shows that 386,673 families of soldiers and sail ors are still being assisted through this medium. The service is probably in touch with more than 500,000 families, as only 58 per cent of the Home Service sections reported. It had been decided, as the need for Home Service with the families of soldiers and sailors decreases, that chapters may undertake work with other famiilies where the field is not other social already covered by agencies. k 4 Jt3 !
