Supervisor B. E. Mattsson of the Manti National forest reserve has mailed to this office a copy of the Weekly News Utter of the U. S. Department of Agriculture containing an article on blackleg in cattle, and the free distribution of blackleg vaccine by the Bureau of Animal Industry, with the suggestion that the article be published as a warning to cattle owners to guard against the deadly cattle plague, as well as to furn-i.- -h them with information regarding the free distribution and the use of the blackleg vaccine. As a few cases of blackleg have been reported in this vicinity of late, we think the suggestion of Supervisor Mattsson very timely and print the following excerpts with the hope that all cattlemen will read and profit by them. Blackleg, or as it is sometimes called, black quarter, occurs practically everywhere in the United States, with the exception of the southern Atlantic and eastern j ulf States The greatest losses, however, take place on the large ranges of the Wej--t and Southwest. Young animals between the ages of J and 1S months are the most susceptible to the disease, although some are attacked at an earlier age. After they are 2 years old, it is unusual for cattle in this country to contract the disease. and some authorities state that after C years of age the animal is from "wet" to "dry" territory and which further prohibits any common carrier or agent of such common earlier from accepting for shipment or delivering intoxicating liquors to consignees dry territory.
