Rockefeller Interests are behind this project, and the development of Alaska oil fields Is oue of the principal incentives of construe tion. The Alaska Central is being built from Reconstruction Bay north and west to Cook Inlet, and thence in almost a straight line to Rampart, on the Yukon river, a total distance of about 600 miles. About 100 miles of the road are already practically completed. Steamship service between Resurrection Bay and North Pacific porta will be established during the present summer. The general manager of the Alaska Central Railroad is Q. W. Dickinson, who was formerly general manager of the Northern Pacific and later in the same capacity with the Seattle Electric Railway Company. Former Governor John B. McGraw, of Washington, Is the F. Augustus Helnze, the Montana copper magnate, is largely Interested in the company. The capital stock is $30,000,000. The country through which the Alaska Central will run comprises a valley heavily timbered, and contains rich gold, copper and other minerals, as well as abundant beds of coal. Its northern terminus Is In the center of the new Tanana gold fields. The road will make the Interior of Alaska accessible at any time of the year, and will save from two to four weeks of travel that have heretofore been necessary. It is stated by the builders that the completion of the road will bring the gold output of Alaska from Its present $35000,H)0 a year to or even more. The most ambitious of all Alaskan railway projects Is that of the Trans-alaskarailway company, which was incorporated at the Department of the Secretary of State at Washington about eight months ago. Several European capitalists are associated with moneyed men from the United States In this enterprise. The Transalaskan a point on Cook will run from railway Inlet to Port Clarence, on Cape Prince of Wales, the point where Alaska most nearly approaches Siberia, Connection will be made there, according to the plans of the promoters, with a nch to be built from the northern Transslberlan Russian line. A line of steamships will connect the Transalaskan road with Seattle and the South. St Louis Republic vice-presiden- t, $50,-000,00- 0, l- - Oo'-ernment- Indians Atfor the Implements by Which They Earn Living. In his report on the last Indian cen-suR. Rlsley, a well known authority on Indian folk-lorand anthropology, gives a curious example of the readiness with which the people accept new a e objects of worship and surround them with a special ritual. Every year when the government of India moves from Simla to Calcutta there go with It as orderlies or "chaprasls" a number of cultivators from the hills round about Simla, who are employed te carry about dispatch boxes and to attend upon the various grades of officials In that great bureaucracy. At the time of the spring equinox there is a festival called Sri Panohami, when it is incumbent on every us-minded person to worship the implements or Insignia ot the vocation by which he lives. The soldier worships his sword; the cultivator his plow; the money lender his ledger; the thugs had a qlcturesque ritual for adorning the pickax with which they dug the graves of their victims; and, to take the most modern instance, the operatives In the Jute mills near Calcutta bow down to the Glasgow-madengines which drive their looms. Rlsley says: "Two years ago I asked one of the orderlies what worship he had done on this particular occasion, and he was good enough to give me, knowing that I was Interested In the subject, a minute description ot the ritual observed. "The ceremony took place on the flat roof of the huge pile of buildings which Is occupied by the secretariats of the government of India. "The worshipers, some thirty in number, engaged as their priest a Punjabi Brahman, who was employed In the same capacity as themselves. They took one of the large packing cases which are used to convey office records, draped Its rough woodwork with plantain leaves and branches ot the sacred pipal tree.
