We admire President Roosevelt for hesitating to take such a step. te. i o After threo weeks spent in examining jurors. and about fifty witnesses, and listening to of council, the Peterson murder case was given to the jury on Friday last at 5 o'clock and aft r threo hours they returned a verdict of not guilty. It has been a hard contested case from the very start Nothing was left undone as. concerned to make it a for as the prosecution was -- it u k :nnnr.:r.:nn :iu an i;u auu..1 WIU19 iaj-iucis- , iiiuiuugii lurtaiipatiuii there are oine who attended the trial day after" d.iy thought the defendant should have received some punishment, still there are a. largo number who t ink the verdict was what it should be. It goes without saying that Mr.'Robertson and Mr. King made a good fight for tho defendant, and" they were justly entitled to the warm congratula-the- y received by the sympathyziers of the defendant. In his closing argument Mr. Greenwood made a reputation as an eloquent pleader, and .1 udge Ma rioncaux's charge to the jury was considered by tho members of tho bar as a most able presentment of the law in the case as well as a model of English diction. So that altogether it. can be fairly said that tho defendant had a fair and impartial trial. On the other charge, for tho killing of Eastman, the defendant was released from jail upon giving-the-argumen- a bond in the sum of one thousand dollars. Wc weje unable to learn whether the case would be ultimately tried or dismissed. Incidently the evidence in the Etstman case was full' gone into in the trial of the Peterson case, and as tho defense in the former would be practically the same as in the latter it is quite probable the information will be dismissed at the next term of court. County Attorney Pike who rendered valuable assistance in the prosecution of the case just tried said he thought the disposition of the Eastman case would depend somewhat upon future development in tho line of additional evidence.
