Show IS THE EARTH DRYING UP STRANGE PEOPLE IN RUSSIA. SANITARIUM. In Interesting Question Suggested by Jesup Expedition Back Sven Hedin'a Asiatic Exploration. 31 has been suggested, apropos of Sr. Sveu Hedin'a Asiatic explorations, Out the climate of a great part of the jiotie Is gradually becoming drier, and jhat this is due to those sunspota hu-- h have been Invoked as the caue T w this comes many calamities. Siout Is not very clear, though our watemporary thinks it would be aesier to explain "if the sun were fatty a valuable star;" but the idea seems to be that the sunspota cause a Slaalnution of the rainfall, by lessening the amount of heat given out by Che sun. Even the basis of this argument is very doubtful, for while some1 aftservers claim that the prevalence of aunsrpots is- accompanied by a fall, atfiers think it is associated with a Use In the temperature of the earth. SHe truth probably- is that, as Mr. Stoirt Scott has suggested, they exer-tSs- e very little influence upon terrestrial temperature at all, and this incomes more likely when we consider Hie extremely small portion of the rat's surface not more than Brtrmlredth part of the whole covered by the' largest eruption of sunspots. Diminishing this still further by subtracting the extremely large proportion of solar heat which does not reach as at all. it will be seen that the differ-nethat they can make to us in this respect is fairly negligible. Even were it otherwise, is there any reason for supposing that the earth is trying up? The rainfall is in the main aaused by the mixing of currents of tamp air with those of a higher or low-s- r temperature in the upper parts of Ike atmosphere, and the dampness of the air is mostly due to the evaporation of moisture from the earth's surface. Thus is explained the fact that Ca the northern hemisphere the west-era side of the continent is always taore equable in climate than the eastern, owing to the winds there prevalent being westerly and bringing with item masses of vapor from the evaporation of the oceans over which they blow. So, too, at the equator, where the heat of the sun attains its greatest force, the rainfall, when It does come, !a so terrific that Dampier's story of tfriukingcups being filled by it quicker than they could be drained by drink-lo- g has been thought to be not inered-Bile- . If, therefore, the heat of the mm were to so diminish as to cause a gmeral' lowering of temperature all over the world. It mi;ht indeed lead to a decrease in the rainfall, i But the theory that solar heat is being slowly exhausted depends upon proof that I. Is maintained by combus-Soonly, and this has lately received rade shocks. So long as it wa3 thought that the sun's heat was due to the en ergy developed by the gradual of Its surface, refreshed occa sioaally by the falling into it ol areteors and other satellites, there wa much reason to suppose that it migiiT me day give out. But later dlseoverie afford reason for supposing that this i ot so, and that solar radiation may be so rlearly connected with othet phenomena as to be and so far aa we can Judge, indestruct-ftle- . At all events, we may content orsplvea with the idea that If oui earth is In the long run doomed to ex tinctlon. the end Is not likely to com lor some millions of years, and that lti raoee of death, as Voltaire said about the poisonous effect of alcohol. A hitherto unknown race of huraru beings was found in northern Siberia on the rim of the Arctic circle by th Jesup north Pacific exploring expedition, sent out two years ago by Morris K. Jesup. president of the American Museum of Natural History. Tho expedition was headed by Waldemar J. Jochelson, a Russian scientist, who was accompanied by Waldemar Bogoras. Both are members of the St. Petersbugi' Academy of Sciences and the St. Petersburg Geographical society. The party collected 15,000 specimens nearly all of which are now at the Natural History, and will soon be unboxed. One of the specimens ia a tusk weighing 220 pounds, undoubtedly the largest tusk in the world. The ev pedltion also has 2,000 bone carving, executed in a manner that will excite the interest of artists. They bring back also eight complete sets of iron armor, similar to that made in Japan in earl; times. There is no doubn, says Mr. Jochelson, that the nor.hern tribes of Siberia and the Japanese are of the same origin. "This is not so remarkable," he adds, "as our discovery of tribes in Siberia which possess characteristics in common with the Indians of North Amer ica. We found some of the tribes having legends, language and customs almost identical with those ot the American Indians." The Messrs. Jochelson and Bogoras traveled 15,000 miles. A large part ot the journey was made by sleigh. They were accompanied by their wives, and the women bore the hardships without complaint. The party went from New York to Vladivostock by way of ban Francisco and Japan. They embarked on a Russian steamer which makes an annual trip up the Paclfie coast 1,500 miles to the mouth of Anadyr river. They reached Marinsky. the most northerly Russian military post on the Pacific coast, where separate exploring trips were made. Mr. Bogoras and his wife, with one American and one Swiss attendant, traveled 6.000 miles with 150 Siberian dogs. On the return trip to Marinsky, the sledges were abandoned and a voyage of 800 miles was made i a a rowboat. The party was on the water thirty-fou- r days, most of the tlms in an open sea, reaching port just in tim t, to catch a returning steamer. The which saved them one year's wait, Is now at the Museum of Natural History, New York Commercial Advertiser. Mu-seuu- I 52 Tit lUxtd. You Have Always Boutrht lias horn twra of Ghas. II.
