Show A II! (S) LIFE-SAVIN- MASK. G HOUSE OF 5,000 BITS OF WOOD. WESTERN CANADA'S RESOURCES. Device to Be cf Benefit to Shipwrecked Persons. A German Inventor has decided that many persons come to their death through drowning at sea, even though they are able to swim or are prevented from sinking by the wearing of life belts. He maintains that the deaths are due to the fact that the waves breaking over the wearer force salt water Into the mouth and nnse, often resulting fatally to the victim. To eliminate this danger he has invented a mask, preferably made life-savin- Toy Made by a Woodworker In a Connecticut Town. George Wright, a sawyer in the employ of a dock company in has completed a miniature house, says the Waterbury Republi can. It is gothic in style, a 6tory and a half in height. There is a porch in front, the roof of which is supported by pillars. On each side of the porch and separate from it are balconies. There are two bow windows. The house is built in imitation of a brick building, and is composed of 6,182 pieces of wood, including syca more, or California red wood, as it is called, and mahogany, and fine whitepaper Is used between the bricks to represent' mortar. Over the porch at the front of the house is a small clock. There are windows with lace curtains and shades. In every respect it is a complete and house. It is a very handsome piece of work and proves Mr. Wright to possess a large amount of patience. The work has been done at odd , moments at his home in Torrington. He also has a number of other pieces of his handiwork, including a picture frame composed of 40,000 pieces of wood, but probably there Is nothing that he has done that will quite equal the house in design and workmanship. Farming Very Successful. By Western or Northwest Canada is usually meant the great agricultural country west of Ontario, and north of Minnesota, North Dakota, and Montana. Part of it is agricultural prairie, treeless In places, park like in others, part is genuine plains, well adapted to cattle ranches; part requires irrigation for successful tillage, most of It does not. The political divisions of this region are the Province of Manitoba and the territorial district of Saskatchewan, Alberta and Athabaska. At present, however, the latter is too remote for immediate practical purposes. The general character of the soil of Western Canada is a rich, black, clar loam with a clay subsoil. Such a soil Is particularly rich in food for tha wheat plant. The subsoil Is a clay, which retains the winter frost until It Is thawed out by tho warm rays of the sun and drawn upward to stimulate the growth of the young wheat, so that even in dry seasons wheat is a good crop. The clay soli also retains the beat of the sun later in the summer and assists in the early ripening of the grain. .It is claimed that cultivation has the effect of increasing the temperature of the soil several degrees, as well as the air above it. Western Canada climate is good-c- old in winter, hot in summer, but with cool nights. Violent storms of any kind are rare. The rainfall ' not heavy. It varies with places, but averages about 17 inches. It falls usually at the time the growing crops need 1L The Department of the Interior, Ottawa, Canada, has agents established at different points throughout the United States who will be pleased to forward an Atlas of Western Canada and give such other information as to railway rate, etc., as may be required. That agriculture in Western Canada pays Is shown by the number of testimonials given by farmers. The following is an extract made from a letter from a farmer near Moose Ja "At the present time I own sixteen hundred acres of land, fifty horses and a large pasture fenced containing a thousand acres. These horses run out all winter and come in in the spring quite fat. A man with money judiciously expended will make a competence very shortly. I consider in the last six years the increase in the value of my land has netted me fort thousand dollars." If not quite impossible, for any one to say which are the seven greatest wonders of modern times. In regard to several most people would probably agree, out with respect to others there would be a wide divergence of opinion. The following are entitled to be ranked among the wonders of modern times, but which are the seven greatest we do not presume to say: The Suez canal, the Forth bridge in Scotland, the Brooklyn bridge in New York, the Assouan dam across the Nile In Upper Egypt, subwireless telemarine boats, the flying machine, the use of graphy, electricity for purposes of power, light, etc., the telegraph and telephone. Some of the discoveries in medicine and surgery, for instance, the discovery of anesthetics, which render surgical operations painless, should also be ranked among tbe modern wonders.
