Helping Themselves to Lower Food Prices ‘The philosophy of self:jihelp served Paul Horvat so “I knew there were hungry people in Chicago, people who could have used that food," he said. “I also knew many of these people could not afford the high prices demanded for food in the city grocery stores.” Mr. Horvat figures these people could, though, afford the price the farmers were asking. He decided that coops at both ends of the marketing line—with no one in between—would help both the consumer and the farmer. First, Mr. Horvat contacted farmers. They were willing to bring their crops into Chicago and sell them below grocery store prices, but above what wholesalers were offering them. Mr. Horvat then organized . ,,.-;§goll from his childhood in :Yugoslavia through the op/ ;fration of his own business I,_nea‘r Chicago that he could not see why it would not be a solution to the problem of high food prices. A television newscast in the summer of I967 got Mr. Horvat thinking about the prbblems of farmers and 'jt-hose of inner city dwellers .on low, fixed incomes. “I couldn’t believe what I ' was seeing," the 74-year-old Mr. Horvat said as he recalled that newscast. Television is still in its developmental stage. The next ten years will bring changes as drastic as the change from black and white telecasting to color telecasting. The Vanguard of the change. has already arrived in Park City in the form of giant screen projectors. Not one but two projectors are being installed in local bars. Although the expense of these projectors puts them out of the affordable price range of all but the most affluent of Park City’s residents, it appears that the era of high fidelity television has arrived. The first bar to give a glimpse of what giant screen TV promises is the Club Annex with its Sony projector. The projector is not a miracle of modern technology, but is a clever use of mirrors. A Sony Trinitron television is mounted in a wooden frame, with a mirror rounded at a 45 degree angle on top of the screen. In this respect it is a political novel. The author, however, is careful to avoid making any overly didactic statements. For example, while in his award winning best seller, The Book of Daniel, the author is clearly alluding to the Rosenburg’s tragic execution, itis not until Ragtime that he so totally amalgamates history and fiction in such a way that it might be termed a new genre. The historical setting of this novel is America at the turn of the century. Teddy Roosevelt was President and patriotism is in vogue. “Everyone wore white in summer.
