He enjoys an .explicitly defined de-fined independence because it is the only condition under which he can fulfill his role, which is to inform fully, fairly and comprehensively. The crux is not the publisher's 'freedom to print': it is rather the citizen's right to know.' " Arthur Hays Sulzberger. VIEW FROM THE CABOOSE by Bob Nance What direction is our country going? No one seems to know. The President appoints a high-level committee to advise him on student unrest and campus violence, and the Vice President says the advice is no good. Our country isn't being led by the President and his administration. They're reacting as though everything every-thing is out of their control. We've got recession problems, prob-lems, un-employment rising, and groceries costing more than we can afford, and the best they can do is send us Spiro Agnew, mouthing political piffle as if he were William Jennings Bryan. If our leaders won't lead, let the people point the way. Let's make it clear this November that we're sick of promises that "the economy is correcting itself" or whining complaints that "Congress won't act on law and order bills". Let's get action, not empty words, on a Viet Nam pull-out. Action, not platitudes, on cleaning up our environment. Action, not scare tactics, on cleaning up our system of law and order. Action, not excuses, on feeding hungry American Ameri-can kids. If you make me your Congressman, I'll do my' darndest to get some action on these problems for you.
