Show i4 Mrs. W. Stephenson Of Hoiden Vrites On P-TA Confab Regional Director, Mrs. Wesley Stephenson of Hoiden, attended P-TA P-TA Convention meetings at Salt Lake City May 2, 3 and 4. She states this was an especially good convention with a great number of , interested and well informed dele-' gates taking an active part. The Utah Congress of Parents and Teachers, a branch of the Na-' tional Congress of Parents and Tea- ( chers, is guided by five basic ob-( jects. In the present crisis in the public schools of Utah the fifth of these objects seems particularly , pertinent, to wit: ! "To develop between educators, and the general public such united efforts as will secure for every) for every child the highest advantages advan-tages in physical, mental, social and spir.tual education". I In an effort to get Utah schools. opened on schedule in the fall, two resolutions were put to the convention body for consideration. Much discussion resulted in the adoption of a compromise resolution. resolu-tion. This has been covered by daily papers. We note one daily paper stated in effect that the membership of Utah Congress of Parents and Teachers Tea-chers is comprised of 60 teachers. The figure as given by President Mrs. James Ure III, is 6 . A policy statement concerning Federal Aid also came under much discussion. However, it became necessary ne-cessary to point out that practically practical-ly every school in Utah is already receiving Federal Aid in some form if only through the School Lunch Program and this was not the question ques-tion being considered The policy statement under consideration reads: ''In order that the free public school system be maintained and strengthened, federal funds for education ed-ucation must be appropriated for publicly controlled, tax-supported schools only, for the purpose of increasing educational opportunity opportuni-ty and services among the states, with provision ensuring maximum local control and encouraging states to give their own best support sup-port and to equalize educational opportunities and services within their own boundaries." This was approved by a standing vote. The proposed Action Program for 1963-64 was approved with amendments amend-ments in an effort to stimulate appropriate ap-propriate action through PTA units in giving major emphasis this year to: Work to Strengthen Family Life in Utah. Mrs. Harriet Eliason and Mrs. Merlene Callister represented Delta Del-ta High and Jr. High PTA at the convention meetings May 3 and 4. Delta Garden Club will meet Friday, Fri-day, May 10, 7:00 p.m. at the home of Betty Robson.
