By Kenneth Lovell State Class B Tourney Finally, the curtain rings down on the "Rabbit's" 19G0 basketball campaign. The season began rather dismally, as we lost our first game to Juab by a big margin; but it was nothing compared to the way we ended it. Two games at State and two losses one game we should have won on our record a-lone, a-lone, and the other on sheer "lead". I don't know what happened to the players that first day, but something can always be said a-bout a-bout the tenseness, excitement, and publicity that is a major part of the tourney. The tournament began on Wednesday Wed-nesday with the Lower Bracket playing in the morning and afternoon. after-noon. Delta met Lehi, 3rd place team in Region Seven, In the bracket's last game at 3:00. The game started off rather mildly for Delta as Lehi ran up a 11-2 lead early in the first quarter. Foul shooting kept the Rabbits in the game as they leaned heavily on that department to close the gap to 3 points at the end of the first period, 15-12. The second period wasn't much better for "the red and white" as they made only three field goals, but Lehi ran Into a little trouble also. Delta tied up the score at 16-all and then Ken Christensen put us ahead for the first time in the game with two foul shots 18-16. From there It was a see-saw battle to the end of the first half, with LeRay Jackson and Sterling Church playing a driving defensive and rebounding re-bounding game. The Pioneers came out ahead at the end of the half 24-22, The third period was our worst effort of the day. We managed to make a meager nine points while Lehi proceded to run away from us. They began by leaving us behind be-hind in the dust 33-22, before we knew which basket was ours. Our foul shooting even fell off here as we hit 5 of 8 slightly better than 50. Substitutions were filing in regularly for Delta and no one was in long enough to get hot. Lehi came out of the quarter with a 43-31 lead. Both teams began sparking in the fourth period or, I should say we began and they continued. Even though we scored 21 points in the final quarter behind Roger Davis' 12 points and Jim McCormick's 6, Lehi's maintaining lead was just too much to overcome. In fact, they made 20 points themselves, so they weren't exactly resting on their laurels- enjoying the lead. And that's how it was. We lost the game in the third period and made e-nough e-nough points in the fourth to win, had we but been able to slow the Pioneers down. Final score: 63-52 for Lehi. At least we were sure of one thing now. We were out of the championship bracket, and could only hope for a fifth-place standing, stand-ing, at best. Thursday, we played at 7:40 In the p.m. There was plenty of rabid ra-bid Rabbit fans on hand for our last-ditch effort. Delta was to meet the last-second losers of the Juab-Judge Juab-Judge Memorial game, which was Judge, of course. Judge Memorial was a second place entry from the Jordan Division of Region Six, and they had shown up very well a-gainst a-gainst the Champion Wasps the day before. Contrary to the day before, Delta took the lead 8-2 midway in the quarter. In fact, Judge didn't make a field goal until 4:35 minutes had elapsed in the first period. Things were looking up a little for the Rabbits, as they capitalized on a fast-break style of play to extend their lead to 11-4 and 15-8. It really u n u looked easy with Ken Christensen We made 8 points while they leading and LeRay and Sterling countered with 16 to tie the game scrambling all over the boards as up at the end of the regulation usual. Delta led at the end of the game, 52-52. In fact, we were be-quarter, be-quarter, 15-12. I hind 51-52 with just a few seconds Now, Judge began making a move. They caught up to within one point of us 16-17, then went ahead 18-17. Delta tied it at 18-all on a foul shot by Ken. LeRay then put us ahead on another foul shot 19-18. The lead bounced from team to team as each club squared off at each other. Delta took a small lead 25-21 at one point, but Judge was back to tie it in no time. Our biggest lead of the quarter found us leading 31-26 at the half. The third quarter saw both teams scoring fairly evenly. Delta held on to its lead with Ken and LeRay leading the point barrage. Our lead went like this:35-30, 39-32, 41-32, and the 44-36 score by which we led at the end of the period. The Spectacular play of the ball game goes to Ken Christensen, as he dumped In a shot from the halfway half-way line, on the run, with about two seconds left in the period. It was a shot that went right in didn't rebound off the bankboard or circle the rim a couple of times, either, It was as beautiful a shot as you could ever hope to see. Now came the fatal period. Leading Lead-ing 48-36 early in the final quarter, we had to sit by and watch our lead dwindling 48-40, 48-44, 48-46, 50-46 (Well, what do you know we made a basket). Yes, we made a basket, and it was exactly of our scoring for the whole quarter. left in the game, when Roger Davis tied it up with a foul shot. Now, an overtime was in order. Three minutes were added to the game so as to decide a winner. Judge got the tip, but their shot was no good. Delta took over shot and missed. Jim McCormick tied the Judge ball-handler up. Judge again took the tip, and was fouled shooting. shoot-ing. The basket was good and so was the foul shot. Judge led 55-52 with about a minute and a half remaining. re-maining. Judge again was fouled, and they added another point. Russell Great-house Great-house came back with a short jumper to make the score 56-54 in favor of Judge Memorial. LeRay was fouled but missed his shot, and Judge scampered down to another basket. With less than a half minute min-ute remaining Delta took the ball. In Delta's haste to get a basket, however, the Bulldogs stole the ball and proceeded to run out the clock. Final score 58-54. There you have it. Should we have won or did Judg9 really have the better team. Did we get too sure of ourselves, our did we get tired and give up. We'll probably never know as this was the last game for our ten seniors who made up the nucleus and bench strength of our 1959-1960 basketball squad. SCORING F. G. S. G.
