America's first four jet bombing plane, made its initial test flight, landing 60 minutes after takeoff here. The big plane, which resembles a one jet fighter plane rather than a ! bomber, was said by army . air forces to have -excepuonduy mgn speed. They did not amplify, but presumably the B-45 is considerably faster than the B-29 of World War II ' fame, which cruises at about 300 The plane is the first of 96 ordered from North American under a $73,-900,000 $73,-900,000 army contract. It has been under secret production. Truck Hijacking Strikes High j Level; Loss Is $25,CC0,C00 ! CHICAGO. Truck hijacking has i reached an all-time peak with a $25,000,000 total loss from more than 5,000 vehicles in the past year, a New York alarm system company president reports. ' Jack Seide said last year's truck , cargo thefts were 20 per cent higher than the previous year. He said hi jackers take anytning irom ice cream or Sinatra records to coffee j or eggs. Textiles accounted for one- j third of the thefts. ' 1 He attributed the crime increase , to four factors: development of unique methods by thieves, a pickup pick-up in youth crimes, revival of old gangs and the moving into the field of wartime black market operators. Russ Soviet Council Seeking Large Increase in Production MOSCOW. The Soviet council ol ministers called on Russian heavy industries to increase their 1947 output out-put by as much as 345 per cent over last year and estimated that 31.600,-000 31.600,-000 workers would be needed to accomplish the task. ! The Call for the 315 per cent hike !was for farm cultivators, and it ''emphasized the need for increased I food production cited by the central : committee of the Communist party. ; The' Communists asked for a boost !of almost 30 million acres in land to be cultivated in the next two years. , r..t 9 ..: ..p- ' y ; .. ? , )i t - III 111 II II Congratulations Class of '47 KIRK'S ' CLOTHING Corner 1st East and State i- ' - - ? Conn., in 1856, followed by a plant in New Yoris state m iouu and one at Elgin. EL. in 1865. Look out! There's another big railroad rail-road wagedemandheadedyourway! The non-operating unions alone whose members do not actually . operate trains are demanding a fiat increase of 20 cents an hour. These demands would cost the railroads rail-roads of the country five hundred sixty-eight million dollars a year! Last year these employes had an increase of 18 cents m hour. This was their third major wage increase since 1939. Their average weekly pay has gone up 75, as against a cost-of-living rise of 54. , Since 1939, railroad wage and material costs have gone up more than three times as much as freight rates, and five times -as much aa passenger fares. That 13 why in 1946, with the largest peacetime traffic in history, the net income of railroads went down to the equivalent equiva-lent of only 2 of the net property prop-erty investment. What About 19i7? Even with the recent freight rate increase, preliminary figures indicate indi-cate that the railroads will make only about the same low return in 1947 as in 1946. This will be because: the wage increase made in 1946 will be in effect for all of 1947; special payroll taxes on railroads have recently been increased; and passenger traffic has declined; JJTiere Would the Money Come From?
