Spotlighting UTAH Little Known Historical . Highlights Utahns have been made doubly conscious of their state's scenic. cultural and historical attrac tions during "Know Your Utah Week" just concluded. Among the many things pointed out bv historical enthusiasts is that Utah was discovered just 48 years after Columbus discovered America. In 1640", Captain Garcia Lopez De Gardenas, Spanish explorer looked into Utah and was blocked block-ed in his attempt to enter the area at the south borders by the great chasm of the Colorado River. He reported that the land north of the Colorado was nothing noth-ing but a desert. , In July, 1776, the same month and the year of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Father Escalante, a noted Spanish Span-ish missionary was the second white man to discover the territory terri-tory of Utah. Accompanied by Spanish soldiers and Indian guides, the party entered Utah east of the present town of Vernal and then cut southwest across countfy to Utah Lake. Thrilled with the beauties of the valley, the lake and the country in general, he proclaimed it "New Spain" and hoped to be able to colonize the area with Spaniards. While the use of rubber boats came into prominence during the 1 "ViV.V.V.VAVA """ t , , ...... .VA.. .... I late war, their use is not new, for 1C4 years ago, John C. Fremont and Jim Bridger launched a hub-ber hub-ber boat on Great Salt Lake and did considerable exploring. When the Pioneers first arrived in Utah .territory, a thriving "slave trade" in Indian women and children was being carried on by Spanish and Mexicans. Following part of Escalante's original trail, Spanish slave traders trad-ers entered Utah and stole or purchased from their parents, hundreds of young Indian children chil-dren and sold them in Mexico as slaves. Chief Walkef, an intelligent in-telligent and outstanding Ute Indian leader, a converted member mem-ber of the LDS Church set up business in southern Utah blocking block-ing the Spanish Trail and collected col-lected toll from the slave traders as they entered and left with the Indian children tied to the backs of mules. Needless to mention, Brigham Young went to considerable consid-erable effort to stamp out the Utah slave trading. New Use For Utah Metals Two Utah metals copper and lead have been successfully fused into a new alloy that bids fair to revolutionize industry machinery ma-chinery because this new product pro-duct converted into machine bearings practically never wears out. Even without lubrication, exhaustive tests reveal that the bearings will not burn up after hours of no lubrication; the self -oiling qualities furnished by the lead in the alloy is the answer. Utahns who perfected this new alloy Lee Bowen and Dan G. Cunningham, the latter a former master mechanic for the D. & R. G. Western Railroad, vision manufacturing man-ufacturing plants all over the nation changing over to the new copper-lead alloy bearings. "Hot boxes " the dread of railroad trainmen, can be entirely eliminated eli-minated through the use of the new bearing It is pointed out. The new development promises wider use of Utah minerals. Utah Is Hollywood's Backdoor A survey of motion picture ac-tviity ac-tviity in Utah since 1916 reveals that more than thirty pictures or important parts of pictures have been made in the State. Approximately Ap-proximately $9,000,000 has been spent by Hollywood producers in Utah for the use of extras, horses, cattle, ranches, location, housing, feeding, and the transportation trans-portation tf those connected with the making of pictures.
