Resident joins medical specialists in the science of cardiology By Kalyn Secretan Dr. John Mitchell of Pleasant Grove was the featured fea-tured speaker at the Utah Valley Regional Medical Center Community Workshop Work-shop titled "Your Heart: A Healthy Investment." He and his wife moved to Pleasant Grove from Hawaii when he accepted the job as Cardiothoracic Surgeon at the hospital in Provo. Mitchell presented a slide presentation featuring the past, the present and the future with new techniques tech-niques and challenges in cardiology. The first heart surgery was performed in Frankfurt in 1896 by Ludwig Rehor, the patient was drunk. In 1902 a 13-year-old was operated on for a stab wound. In World War II, cardiac injuries were repaired. A heart technique to repair the heart was fathered by Dr. Bailey in 1948, the first four patients died. In England the first valve operation was performed per-formed in 1951 using a glass ball. Recently heart patients had the vein taken from the leg, a long incision was needed, now a small incision inci-sion is made with two cuts. Ad,:. V i t The first radial artery surgery at the hospital was performed last month with the vein taken from the arm without a tourniquet. Dr. Rodney Badger was also a featured speaker and talked about the risk factors fac-tors for heart disease and the ones you should really do something about. He encouraged the use of statins to reduce the cholesterol choles-terol level. Breakout sessions included "Heavenly Heart-Smart Heart-Smart Cooking, the food was prepared and served by UVRMC's Catering gurus, everyone enjoyed Asian Garden Chicken Wraps, Mixed Green Salad with Lemon Yogurt Dressing and Chocolate Trifle made with a fat free chocolate cake, chocolate pudding made with skim milk and nondairy dessert topping and frozen raspberries. Participants also had relaxing moments with Julie Hancock, a certified Yoga instructor and received exercise advice and a chance to check their heartbeat on the treadmill. The Utah Valley Regional Region-al Medical Center sponsors heart workshops every year along with cholesterol checks, continental breakfast break-fast and lunch. for undergraduate students, stu-dents, 100 plants are selected select-ed randomly, then each student stu-dent has 60 seconds to identify iden-tify family, genus and species. "There is always pressure," pres-sure," said Bench. "We practiced prac-ticed hard and put in a lot of hours studying so that we would be successful." With success at these competitions the reputation of UVSC and its students continues to build. "These competitions are a great thing for our students stu-dents and the College," said Renee Van Buren, associate professor of biology. "Because of the reputation the teams are building at these competitions they will have a huge advantage when it comes to employment employ-ment and graduate school." In February UVSC finished fin-ished fourth as a team at a national competition that included teams from Mexico and Canada. The Prince and Me Rating: 1.5 stars Formula movies, like McDonalds, work. They may not be exciting, but no one is surprised with what they get. The Prince and Me is a Big Mac, with a slice of pineapple in the middle. You expect one thing and get another. The chance directors direc-tors take by making a formula for-mula movie, but not following follow-ing the formula, is that the audience expects one thing, gets another, and is dissatisfied. dissatis-fied. Martha Coolidge, the director, takes a chance and loses. It turns out that even Cinderella has been tainted by political correctness, and unfortunately, the only thing this fence-sitter has to show for it is slivers. Paige Morgan (Julia Stiles) is a beautiful girl from farm country who is on her way to medical school, she has her eye on her future. Eddie (Luke Mably) is a dashing and well-liked young man who just happens hap-pens to be the prince of Denmark Den-mark who has his eye on nothing. The two meet up, due to Eddie's misunderstanding misunder-standing of American culture cul-ture (he thinks that all college col-lege girls will flash anyone upon request), when Eddie enrolls in college. More mishaps than tenderness shape their budding crush on each other, but eventually they do fall in love and make out in the library stacks. Eddie loses his shirt, and Paige seems destined to lose more than that, when international photographers who have finally caught up with the philandering prince discover them. Eddie returns to Denmark Den-mark in order to finally, and suddenly, take over for his ailing father. Paige rushes off to find her prince, who gratefully accepts her sudden sud-den reappearance. The ending is not part of the Cinderella story, neither is it part of the real world. It's a great big slice of pineapple. If you're going to make a fairy tale movie, give it a fairy tale ending; if you want this to be a statement for woman's rights, then stop trying to make it a fairy tale. They do not go well together. The movie is rated PG, although several scenes of college girls flashing the camera (blocked out by black strips) and the make-out session in the library, tip it more in the PG-13 direction. It is still a fun movie, and Spring Home Equity .41 Intro Rate For three months ZIONS ft cute, and well worth going to see at the dollar movie, if you like pineapple on your Big Mac. The Ladykillers Rating: 3 stars Did you ever meet someone some-one who you thought, they are just too strange to be real? Someone who you laughed at in spite of yourself, your-self, and felt a little guilty, because you could hear your mom's voice in your head preaching, "They can't help how they look. Be nice!" The Coen brothers make characters charac-ters so unreal that you are sure you've met them somewhere. some-where. The Ladykillers are a strange group of six misfits who, despite the nagging mommy-voice in your head, you laugh at because you can't help yourself. Professor G.H. Dorr, played with comic brilliance by Tom Hanks, leads this cartoonish band of misfits and halfwits, who plan on stealing a load of cash from the local casino boat. The problem winds up not in the plan, nor in the execution, but in the old woman who rents Dr. Dorr a room. She is far too sweet, and far too smart, for her own good and ends up putting a colossal kink in the plans of these - . rdi QJ Loan Sale Credit Linet Home Refinance Loan F ' isnss APR fl I Prim for the Ufa of the Loan BANK below-average criminals. Since these ruffians cannot can-not stand the idea of turning all the money over to the authorities and going to church with the old woman (her demand for not turning them in) a solution must be found. The problem falls to who will do the deed that the movie is named for, allowing the rest of the merry band to escape with their loot. Attempted murder has never been so funny, as completely com-pletely competent crooks become bumbling buffoons for the simplest of murders. The odd mixture of accents famous to the Coens is masterfully mas-terfully woven into this movie as well as chain smoking, dumb taken to a whole new level, blown off fingers, Asian tunnel digging and IBS (Irritable (Irri-table Bowel Syndrome). This movie is another strange bag of humanity. The story is twisted, the characters are twisted and the ending is twisted. Be prepared for Coen zaniness right to the very end, and be ready to laugh at people peo-ple who you shouldn't be laughing at. This movie is rated R for one character who has a mouth that a case of Ivory soap wouldn't clean up and is well worth seeing for full price. WO ! ' S 7" ' j .68 APR 1 ii! -A wwv. eionsbank.com I i |
