Newell was inducted into the Army at age 18 and then transferred to the Navy as a "selective volunteer". volun-teer". Newell served on many ships as a senior signalman sig-nalman in the South Pacific during WWII. He was also on two ships that were sunk while in battle. Newell married his sweetheart, Rolleen Little-field, Little-field, of Beaver, Utah August 29, 1947 in Manti, Utah. Their marriage was solemnized in the Provo Temple June 16, 1979. Newell was a successful businessman for over 38 years. He owned a service station and then opened Taysom Tire Service in Orem, which still carries his name. Newell was a people person and had many friends from his businesses. Newell enjoyed nicknaming his friends and most of these names have stuck with them through the years. Newell was an active member and High Priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving serv-ing faithfully in many callings call-ings throughout his life. Many men today remember Newell as their scout leader for so many years. Newell and Rolleen served a mission mis-sion at the Provo Tabernacle Taberna-cle for two years. Newell was very active throughout his life. He participated par-ticipated in softball, loved to fish, and preferred to water ski, mostly on one foot rather than two. He was President of the Bowling Bowl-ing Assn., he bowled on national television and is in the Bowling "Hall of Fame". His greatest love was golfing. golf-ing. He achieved the ultimate ulti-mate goal of making a hole-in-one with a 7-iron. He shared his later years golfing golf-ing with the "Over the Hill Gang" at East Bay Golf Course, and waited patiently patient-ly all winter for the first golf tee. He was an avid Jazz and BYU basketball fan and watched every game. Newell had a funny sense of humor and loved to tell jokes. Newell's greatest pleasure pleas-ure was spending time with his family. He will be deeply missed by all of us. We love you, Dad and Grandpa! Newell is survived by his wife of 56 years, Rolleen; son, Bradley Taysom, Highland, High-land, daughter, Carol (Alan) Baum, American Fork, and his special friend and dog, Tiger. He is loved and adored by his grandchildren: grandchil-dren: Mindy (Darren) Spencer, Lehi; Cody (Carrie) Baum, Callie (Aaron) Dan-ner, Dan-ner, Mike (Chrissy) Baum, Stacey Baum, Skylar (Elsha) Baum, all of American Ameri-can Fork; Derick Taysom, currently serving in the Nashville, TN mission, Brandon White, Pleasant Grove. He is also survived by 9 and one-half grandchildren grandchil-dren and two sisters, Mae (Dee) Croft and Leah Peterson, Peter-son, Provo. "What a spectacular reunion I will have with my parents, three brothers, two sisters, and my dear grandson, grand-son, Ryan Taysom" who all preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 23rd in the American Fork North Stake Center. Burial, American Amer-ican Fork Cemetery with military rites by VFW, District Dis-trict IV. CUSEF winners include, in Sweepstakes as an Intel ISEF Traveler: Trav-eler: Shannon Babb of American Fork High School for her project entitled enti-tled Troubled Water: a Six Month Longitudinal Water Quality Study of the Spanish Fork River Drainage; Monica Lamb and Zach Rawling of American Fork High School worked on a project entitled An Evaluation of the Harmful Effects of Storm Water Run-Off; David Scoville and Tyler Smith of American Fork High School's project was A study of Poison Poi-son Ivy Extracts and Their Effects On Test Organisms; and Steven Van Dijk of Pleasant Grove High School won for Cladogram Construction of Aquatic. Junior Division Grand Champions included Michael Van Dijk of Pleasant Grove Junior High working on an analysis of fish classification using muscle protein polymorphisms. Elementary Grand Champions included: in earth science, Kaitlin Stevens with Reach for the Sky; in the engineering and computer science division, Highland Elementary student stu-dent Sarah Martin with Structure and Strength; and in physical science, Barratt Elementary students Ashley Major and Shantelle Moore with On you mark, get set, BURN. Reed Matthews David Lloyd Gifford, 54, of Pleasant Grove passed sud- away denly on Thursday, March 4, 2004 at Utah Valley Val-ley Regional Region-al Medical Center of a heart attack. He was born October 6, 1949 in Salina, Utah to Lloyd and Jean Nielsen Gifford. He married Carol Lyn Fowles on September 19, 1975 in the Provo LDS Temple. David grew up in Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove and graduated from Pleasant Grove High School in 1967. He served an LDS Mission to Great Britain. David attended BYU and received his B. S. in Law Enforcement. He worked at Geneva Steel for 28 years and was currently employed with Alpine School District at Oak Canyon Junior High School. David retired from the 1457th Engineer Battalion Ash card of thanks of the Utah Army National Guard. David was an active member of the LDS Church and served faithfully in the auxiliary organizations. David was an avid reader and enjoyed fishing and spending summers in Capitol Capi-tol Reef. He was always concerned con-cerned for his family and adored his grandson, Jackson. Jack-son. He is survived by his wife Carol Lyn; daughters: Summer Sum-mer Lyn (Eric) Draney, Kat-rina, Kat-rina, Kesha Halley; grandson, grand-son, Jackson; mother, Jean Gifford all of Pleasant Grove; 2 brothers: Brenn (Zuly) Gifford, Pleasant Grove and Scott (Susan) Gifford, Alpine; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Grant & Virginia Fowles, Pleasant Grove. He was preceded in death by his father. Funeral services were held Tuesday, March 9, 2004 in the North Field First Ward Chapel, Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove. Interment was in the Pleasant Grove City Cemetery. The family of Le Roy M. Ash wishes to express our thanks for the loving care and support at the time of his death. Le Roy Ash family Glen Reed Matthews, age 82, of Lehi, died March 20, 2004, in the American Fork Hospital Hos-pital of heart failure. fail-ure. He was b o r n December 11, 1921 in Pleasant Grove, Utah, son of Walter Glen and Hannah Cox Matthews. He married Betty Irene Christiansen February 13, 1946 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They raised their family in Pioche, Neyada and American Fork, Utah. Reed is a veteran of World War II in the European Campaign. He retired as a Prudential Insurance agent. Reed, a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, served faithfully in many church callings. He and his wife served continuous missions from 1984 to 2003, including includ-ing two missions to the New York, Rochester area, and multiple Family History Missions. He was a loving and supportive sup-portive father, husband, grandfather, and greatgrandfather. great-grandfather. His family loves him dearly, especially his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His sense of humor and cheerful disposition brightened the lives of those around him.
