Olsen also said that if he had to choose, he would pick defense. "I like to hit," he said. "I like contact. That's what football is all about. I like to be the hunter, not the hunted." As much as all three players play-ers and the others like them throughout the Valley do for their teams, they know that their do-it-all role is getting more and more rare. "More guys are going one way," Olsen said. "They focus fo-cus on one thing. It can help but we like to have the best players on the field and a lot of us go both ways. We take pride in it here at AF." The benefits of platooning players and specialization have changed the game and Knight doesn't think that's necessarily bad. "I remember when the quarterback would run, pass, kick, punt and play safety," he said. "There was something endearing, a solid feeling about how the game was then. Now we're playing more teams that are platooning platoon-ing and we've had to change. The game is more sophisticated sophisti-cated and that demands that you use athletes in different areas, but I think it's exciting." excit-ing." But for all of those young guys out there who are wondering what they can do to maximize their playing play-ing time, Olsen has some good advice. "You know that if you want to play Division I, you're going to have to pick a position," he said. "But in high school, do your best in everything you do. Make sure you're the best at it. I American Fork at Pleasant Rewind Continued from Page 6 Zarbock opened up the second quarter with a 32-yard touchdown reception, breaking break-ing two tackles as he made his way to the end zone. The Cavemen made the next score too on an Olsen 7-yard run, but the kick was no good. The Matadors capitalized on an American Fork penalty and started with the ball on the 29, with Hunter once again adding add-ing to the tally. The Cavemen struck next as Lusk sent a 10-yard pass to Cole Peterson. American Fork had a little trickery planned for the extra point. The Cavemen Cave-men lined up for the kick, but Lusk rolled out for a 2-point completion to Wright. In spite of the rain at half-time, half-time, Mount Miguel came out and scored when Hunter broke free for a 62-yard touchdown. Wright responded for the Cavemen, running in a 24-yard 24-yard score, and Olsen later added another with a 3-yard rush. The final American Fork touchdown came from Wright's brother Ethan, who ripped off a 70-yard run all the way to the end zone. Hunter caught another touchdown for Mount Miguel to keep the score close. He broke tackles to take it 52 yards for the score. Matador defensive coordinator coor-dinator Ray Wells felt that the travel hurt his team, but wasn't willing to use it as an excuse. "One day of travel equals one less day of preparation and focus," Wells said. "American "Amer-ican Fork was definitely well-prepared. The physicality of the game wore us down toward to-ward the end." Volleyball I Sept. 23 - American Fork def. Spanish Fork 3-2: The Cavemen outlasted the determined Dons in a five-game thriller on the road. American Fork battled back in the fifth game, though, to win the Region 4 opener 25-18, 25-18, 25-23,21-25, 22-25, 15-6. American Fork coach Da-nette Da-nette Moea'i said, "Our girls found that when they had their backs to the wall, they had to fight really hard like cornered prey. We've been practicing on having to push really hard when we're in a fifth game. It's making us much better. "Tonight, we played a Spanish Span-ish Fork team way better than the one last year. One of their tallest players, Erin Redd, played absolutely awesome against us." During the course of the action, ac-tion, Makenzie Moea'i led the Cavemen with 25 kills while Jessica Jardine contributed another 15. Hayley Su'a-Filo produced six blocks for American Ameri-can Fork. For the first game, Jenny . Orton guided the Cavemen out to a 2-0 lead. Kylee Schofield's serving soon gave the Dons a 3-2 advantage. Despite stern resistance re-sistance from Redd and Jaden Clayson, American Fork still pulled out 7-6 in front through kills produced by Moea'i and Su'a-Filo. Through her spiking, Ma-kayla Ma-kayla Turner joined Reed and Clayson in keeping Spanish Fork close. A Jardine kill gave them the momentum to pull far enough away to keep the Dons from catching up. Aided by a Moea'i ace, Candice Dawson produced a kill that won the first game for the Cavemen. A Mary Stirland kill sent Spanish Fork ahead 4-0 in the second game. A Su'a-Filo Su'a-Filo punch into one Don hole sparked an American Fork comeback. Jenny Hardman's serving produced a 7-1 scoring run for the Cavemen. Though a Rachelle Remund kill tied the game at eight, Dawson registered a tie-breaking tie-breaking spike that permitted American Fork to stay ahead until a service error put the ' Dons back ahead 16-15. The rest of the game went down Grove (6:30 p.m.): The Cavemen Cave-men (2-0, 2-3) are tied for first place in the region right now with the Vikings (2-0, 5-0) and should have some confidence after opening the league season sea-son with back-to-back wins. Pleasant Gove is on a roll and will be looking to keep the momentum mo-mentum going. Friday, Sept. 26 FOOTBALL I Spanish Fork at American Fork (7 p.m.): The Catf emen (3-2) (3-2) will be anxious to get the region re-gion season off to a solid start, but the Dons (2-3) will have other ideas. " . h ij . - as a seesaw fight as Jardine and Moea'i held their own at the net against Redd, Remund and Dancee Merrell. American Fork won the game on a service ser-vice error. For the third game, the Cavemen built up a 9-2 lead, and they looked as though they would soon have the match put away. Delivering the knockout hit to Spanish Fork quickly became an exercise in frustration. frustra-tion. Remund and Redd delivered deliv-ered kills that stunned American Ameri-can Fork. As soon as the Cavemen Cave-men had created a 12-5 lead, a missed serve gave the Dons the break they needed for rushing back into the contest. They tied it at 19. American Fork broke the 19-19 draw. Spanish Fork regained the lead, and the Dons stayed narrowly nar-rowly for the rest of the round, thanks to hits from Redd and Remund. Hitting errors and missed serves hampered American Fork's cause in the fourth game. The Cavemen trailed for most of that round. When American Fork pulled ahead 8-7, it looked as though it would have a good chance at putting the game away. However, hitting gave the Dons sufficient momentum to pull back out front 11-10. Through Moea'i's serving, Orton's hitting positioned the Cavemen within 18-17. A service ser-vice error tripped American Fork up. It stayed close, but a Redd kill scored a game point for the Dons. After dropping the third and fourth games, the Cavemen Cave-men battled fiercely in the fifth game to take a 6-2 lead. Jardine, Moae'i and Su'a-Filo worked hard to keep the Dons in check. Jardine soon produced pro-duced a kill to give American Fork a win. Emilee Crawley had the best serving rate of 89 percent, serving a total of 19 balls and son Spanish Fork was highly regarded before the season started, so American Fork will have to prepare carefully to avoid any surprises. I Lehl at Lone Peak (7 p.m.): The Knights (3-2) need to find some offensive consistency as well as stay tough on defense to beat the Pioneers (2-2), who have the horses to stay competitive com-petitive if they can avoid the turnover bug. I Timpanogos at Pleasant Grove (7 p.m.): The Timber-wolves Timber-wolves (2-2) have been up and down so far this season, but if the better team shows up, they have a chance to give the Vikings (4-1) a run only missing one. I Sept. 23 - American Fork def. Timpanogos, 3-0: At American Fork, Makenzie Moea'i had 10 kills and Jessica Jardine added nine to lead American Fork past Timpanogos 26-24, 25-16, 25-21 in Region 4. Brooke Miller had 19 digs for the Cavemen. Cross country I Sept. 20 - American Fork takes first again: For a second straight weekend, the Cavemen Cave-men won both ends of a cross country invitational, this time at the Doug Owen Memorial Run at Pleasant Grove. Because the invitational featured only two races, every racer was virtually a varsity competitor. American Fork won the girls and boys divisions divi-sions by respective scores of 35 and 21. The boys race saw an unfolding one of the most dramatic comebacks in cross country this fall. Caveman Ryan Bradshaw recovered quickly enough from a fall in the race to win it by a fraction of a second at 16:15. Bradshaw said, "I took a fall on the eastern end of Battle Creek Park, but I got quickly back up and caught up with a Panguitch runner, who was out in front of everybody else. He pushed me really hard. We were neck-and-neck all the way through the race. We switched off in taking leads in the race. One moment he would be ahead, and the next, I would be." for their money. Tuesday, Sept. 30 GIRLS SOCCER I Timpanogos at American Fork (4 p.m.): The Cavemen will be hoping to keep their tournament hopes alive or, at the least, play a spoiler role, while the Timberwolves need every win now to retain their position. VOLLEYBALL Lehi at American Fork (6:30 p.m.): The Cavemen will want a victory here to give them a shot at staying in the race for a playoff berth, while the Bradshaw and his Panguitch Pangui-tch competitor, Trac Norris, raced alongside each other in the final 100 yards of the race course. Bradshaw crossed the finish line just a hundredth of a second ahead of Norris. The boys champ turned out to be one of five Cavemen to place ., among the top 10 finishers in the division. Among the other Cavemen competing, Robby Lee (3rd in 16:39), Austin West (5th in 16:46), Derek Day (6th in 16:54) and Mac Morrison (10th in 17:10) rounded out the scoring group. Jeff Nelson was 11th, Clayton Young 15th, Brady Pulsipher 17th, Josh Stewart 20th, Corey Jackson 24th and Mike Richards 25th. Other runners included Brian Vandry, Landon Judd, Bob McMillen, Seth Bangerter, Tom Ballard, Adam Derfler, Zach Wigington and Cam Hodges. American Fork boys coach Timo Mostert said, "We're right now in the middle of our most strenuous workout. It was good to see our guys show more mental toughness today. That was how they did the whole race." For the girls, the Cavemen were led by individual winner Alexis Laws at 19:36. She was followed by Jamie Lee (5th in 20:23), Kaovae Belt (8th in 20:49), Danielle West (10th in 21:06) and McCall Harward (11th in 21:17). Asked what she had learned from the Bulldog Invitational, she answered, "I learned I had to work harder at practice and better. I posted a PR for this race. It's not my best record of the season, but I did cut my time down by one minute. I'm going to getting ready to race against Brooke Hod-son Hod-son of Timpanogos at Mount Nebo next week. I like to race against her the most." American Fork girls coach Bruno Hunziker said, "Her mindset today was much better. bet-ter. She had a really good run today, especially at the end." Laws said, "Our team did a very good job today at sticking together. We've been doing that in our meets this year." Kim demons came in 15th, Natasha Lye 19th, Lakyn Lux 22nd, Erminia Martinez 23rd, Abby Morrison 25th, Whitney Gatenby 26th and Kylie Buck-waiter Buck-waiter 27th. Soccer I Sept. 18 - Lone Peak 1, American Amer-ican Fork 0 (OT): It took some extra time for the Knights to subdue the scrappy Cavemen in Region 4 girls soccer, but about two minutes into overtime, over-time, Megan Smith sent a shot Pioneers will want to win to solidify their own chances. Wednesday, Oct. 1 GIRLS TENNIS I Region 4 tournament gets underway (11 a.m.): The Knights have the inside track to a fifth-straight region title, but the competition at several positions could prove very interesting. Pleasant Grove's No. 1 doubles team of Gentry Robinson and Arica Wilson have to be considered the favorites for the region title in their bracket, and others could challenge for the top spots as well. toward the goal from about 18 yards out and managed to get it past the American Fork goalie for the golden goal and the 1-0 victory. Raven King got the shutout in goal for Lone Peak. "It was a great game, very evenly matched and fun to watch," said coach Becca Murdock. "The second round of region could be very exciting," she added. "There should be a lot of close games." Sept. 23 - Lehi 2, American Fork 0: The Pioneers kept their unbeaten streak alive with a hard-fought win over the Cavemen. Cave-men. With their head coach taking time off to look after her new baby, the team came under the guidance of acting head coach CJ Dzubak. She said, "Our defense de-fense played really well in the second half. They clicked together to-gether and didn't let Lehi make any goals in the last half. "We had some great opportunities oppor-tunities to score, but we just couldn't finish our plays with putting the ball into the net." Lehi got onto the scoreboard five minutes into the game. Pioneer Makelle Yates crossed the ball to Alyssa Hill for the first goal Aided by teammates Ashley Broderick, Lauren Brodous, Kylie Dibb and Whitney Fuller, American Fork goalie Amy Krommenhoek kept the score stuck at 1-0 for most of the first period Nikki Ybarra, Kaycee Mansfield Mans-field and Laini Kalumbi led attacks on the Lehi center j in hopes of splitting it wide open, so American Fork could have better chances for good shot selections. Pioneer Jenna Richins frequently stole the ball from the Cavemen on Lehi's end of the field and connect passes to teammates like Jada Muse and Hill. American Fork's defense could not stop Lehi from putting put-ting in a second goal Late in the first half, Makell Carlton scored the game's second goaL In the second period, Mansfield, Mans-field, Ybarra and Erika Day waged a more aggressive of- . fense against Lehi, but American Ameri-can Fork still couldn't slip any shots past goalie Briar Sands. Golf I Sept. 18 - American Fork solidifies spot: The Cavemen have all but wrapped up the third and final team playoff berth even though they finished fin-ished a tight fifth at Soldier Hollow. The meet's scores read Lone Peak 374, Spanish Fork 380, Timpanogos 402, Lehi 402, American Fork 403, and Pleasant Pleas-ant Grove 430. Jake Burningham led Ameri- . can Fork with 77 strokes while Isaac Pedroza added 78, Scott Andrus 82, Jaxson Taylor 83 and Gabe Smith 83 to round out the counted scores. Others Oth-ers competing included Nate Bray, Dusty Mitchell and Ryan Kitchen. "We didn't do very good this time," said American Fork coach Lynn Anderson. "The kids were complacent. We're still state tournament-bound, though. For our last regular season tournament, which is going to be in Wasatch, I'm going go-ing to be mixing up our starting start-ing line-up so that the guys will want to play harder for the sue spots for American Fork players play-ers who'll be going to state. "Once we get there, lasting until the second day of the state tournament is still our goal."
