"I loved that class," she said. "I knew I always wanted to do something science-related." Now a science teacher at American Fork High School, she has fulfilled that dream, and then some. She was recently given the "Accent on Excellence" award by the Alpine Foundation of Alpine School District. Each year, the awards committee selected 10 top teachers, one administrator and one classified classi-fied employee for the honor. Ormond teaches biology, advanced ad-vanced placement biology and advanced placement environmental environ-mental science. "I really love the environment," environ-ment," she said. "It is really applicable. ap-plicable. I feel it is one of those courses the students can make a connection to what is really going on in the world." She said the students seem to respond well to the class. "We get a pretty good response," re-sponse," she said. "I have a good time with my students. They seem to get excited about the content we are going over." One of her favorite topics seems to be the students' favorite, fa-vorite, also. , "I love genetics the most," she said. "That is definitely a favorite subject for me and for the kids, too." Being a science teacher brings challenges of keeping up with the subject matter. At the end of his senior year, I received a letter from him that said if I had not believe in him he didn't think he would still be alive." She said she believes in teaching more than the standard stan-dard curriculum. "Successful people are those who are constantly educating educat-ing themselves," she said. "Therefore, as a teacher, I feel responsible to make sure my students know how to learn." Ormond's students have ranged from those in resource biology classes to those seeking seek-ing college-level credit. She said she enjoys them all, but especially likes the latter. "It is fun to be able to delve a little bit deeper into topics," she said. "I feel like I am a learner along with them. We do a lot of experiments. We don't know what is going to happen. It is really hands-on. It keeps me busy, but it is fun to work with those students who love learning already and they are interested in a subject and they want to do well." When she is not teaching or preparing lessons, she is busy at home with her husband and three boys, ages 9, 5 and 2. She also enjoys nature. "I love the outdoors camping camp-ing with my family," she said. "I grew up riding horses." Her love of science relates well with her family, she said. "It is fun having three little boys. They are not afraid of bugs or dirt. I like the things they are naturally interested in," she said.
