Show Editorial County b two-party idea A post-mortem service was held for the two-party system in Utah County Tuesday night, as Democrats grimly watched the returns at the County Courthouse. Not that it was a surprise. One local resident active in Republican party politics has succinctly stated, "There is only one party in Utah County," implying that if an individual wants to get anywhere politically in this county, he'd better understand un-derstand that. It was demonstrated clearly in the election which saw fine candidates who had been elected to numerous terms in the past lose by large margins. Reflecting on his own win, County Commissioner Jeril Wilson credited his party affiliation with a large part of his victory over a man who had been a popular mayor of one of the county's largest cities. "We don't have a two party system in Utah anymore," Wilson said. "And that's too bad." Wilson wasn't saying he wished he had lost the election, elec-tion, and his job with it. He was thrilled at his victory, and surprised by the large margin. Letter to the Editor Don't blame Editor: I went to work one day as a maintenance man and was fixing a machine when someone came by and turned on the machine. My arm was mangled. I was out of work for several months recuperating and still my arm has problems even though I am able to go back to work. Do I blame the President of the United States? Jo! , , I'm driving down the highway when all of a sudden someone coming the other way crosses over the center line and there is a head-one collision -some are killed. I'm seriously hurt and go through a long period of recovery. Do I blame the President for this? No! Let's turn the clock back 35 to 40 years. The Second World War is over -- the economy is good and getting better. There is an organization beginning to grow throughout the U.S. called a Union. It is an organization of workers in a company who says we will work for you at this wage for. two or three years; then we will bargain for better working conditions, more benefits and higher wage. If we don't get what we want, we will not work; also, we will picket your place and not let anyone else workeither. . . so let's negotiate. The company realizes they are in a tough situation so they yield to the union demands - employees em-ployees get an increase in paycheck and benefits and think this is great. Do they blame the president for this? No! But this happens all across the nation. There is a beginning of inflationbut in-flationbut that doesn't matter becaose in two or three years we will bargain again - another success, more inflation - and over the period , of 25 or 30 years we are the richest y ' people on earth. This even happens in our government. We say that in order . to get good men in Congress we need to pay them more. Our taxes go up. The government starts giving out benefits to people who don't want to Special Order Christmas Cards 10 OFF Christmas Music & Music Supplies We Also Place Orders Fernwood Candy Hsref! FRIDAY'S 756-7676 uries But what he was saying makes political sense. The two-party system provides our government bodies with a strong base for the give-and-take process of political compromise. And it's in working out the compromises com-promises that all of the people are represented. When one party can operate any government at will, without the controls of an opposing viewpoint that has veto power, then that party finds itself in the delicate situation of policing it's own actions to make sure it does the most good for the greatest number of people. It becomes easy to leave behind the moderation that results from compromise in exchange for the party line. So while it's no surprise that Republicans won big in the county and the state, it does eliminate some of the controls the two-party system automatically places on the elected bodies that govern us. And the fact that so few members of the opposite party will be represented in the state legislature means the legislators will need to operate with self-restraint and carefully consideration, so that all Utahns can have fair representation. the President work as well as those who can't. Even professional athletes get into the act. We make a million but we would like two million. No one seems to care about the other person. All of a sudden our castle begins to crumble. From across the border and across the sea comes cars, steel, odds and ends of almost everything you can imagine, and all at a lower price than we can manufacture it here in the U.S. People start buying foreign products, our companies lose contracts con-tracts and have to cut back on labor. More companies than ever are going broke because they can't keep overhead expenses paid. More people are out of work and more people are going broke because they can't keep up with the Joneses. Can we blame the President for this? We would like to; but no we did it all by ourselves. We have priced ourselves right out of the world market. Now because the President tires to wake us up to our own greediness, we don't like it. We like someone to take care of our every need without our being responsible. A president 20 years ago tried the same thing. He said, "Ask not what my country can do for me but ask what I can do for my country." He was assassinated. I think it is time for us to stand on our own two feet and thank God for what we have; and then work as hard as we can to help ourselves. our-selves. Even at this time there are strikes and threatened strikes. Is it because they want their fellow employees to be out of work and then complain to the government that the President did it? A depression is when we are out of work, a recession is when the other person is out of work. Over 10 percent of us are in a depression now. Don't blame the President. It was an account of a man making his first parachute jump. He described his emotions as he stood by the door of the plane getting ready to jump. There is a slight difference between his emotions and mine under similar circumstances. You see I am allergic to heights. So if I am to leave a plane via parachute it would take physical force to eject me from the plane. While I have been blessed in many . ways physically, I have been cursed with the condition called motion sickness. All of my life I have been bothered with this zany condition. I remember well the first time this condition affected me. My parents took me on a train ride to visit some of our relatives. The trip was only a few miles but when I stepped out onto the platform I threw up. What hurt me more than anything was the lack of sympathy from my father. "Look lad," he said, "you have vomited all over your shoes." I have tried many things to overcome over-come this condition but with the same It results. Even the merry-go-round that kids love made me sick. The horses and other animals intrigued me but as soon as the ride was over I would run to some secluded opot and throw up. So you can imagine what happened to me when I sailed on that big liner to come to America. I woke up the first morning out into the Atlantic and felt the motion of that ship. I hurried and dressed and went down to the restroom. The smell of disinfectant was really strong. So between this and the motion of the ship I emptied my stomach of its contents. For four days I heaved until there was nothing left to throw up, but 1 heaved anyway. (c3Glfff n First of all, your IRA contributions can be totally deducted from your pre-tax income. So, for example, if you're in the 25 tax bracket and your annual IRA contribution is $2,000, you immediately save $500 in taxes you'd have to pay without an IRA. And because the interest is tax-free until you start withdrawing, your savings grow faster than usual. For instance, if you're 30 and save $2,000 a year at 1 2 average interest until you're 65, you could amass over a million dollars. --0r dfp-jJ Manas o o DeseretBank Wo'rocll behind you. He avoided becoming sick by staying drunk. I thought he was inhuman when he teased me. "I have a cure for seasickness" he said. "I will get a piece of fat pork and tie it on a string and you can swallow it a few times to lubricate your throat." The evening of the fourth day he gave me a couple of pills to take. "These wii' fix you up," he said. I rior.t know what they were but I spent most of the night running to the toilet. Whatever those pills were they worked, for the next morning my sickness was gone and I went to breakfast. A few years ago, I was at Lagoon with some members of my family. We were out in the middle of the lake in a boat when a storm came up. Within a few minutes the waves were three feet high. The late Leo Nelson and I were assigned to pull up the back anchor. It was embedded in mud and took a lot of physical effort to pull it in. In the meantime the boat was rocking worse than a bucking horse. When the anchor an-chor was safely in the boat, both Leo and I were seasick. I could write about the time I went deep sea fishing out of San Diego. "Eat a good breakfast" we were told, which I did. Indeed it is painful to remember. I shall always remember the words of my wife when she met us at the dock. "Dear, why is your face so green?" My sympathy will always be with those who suffer from this human curse, motion sickness. P |
