Sledding is banned on Cedar Hills golf course Because of extreme safety concerns, city officials have reinforced the no trespassingsledding ban on the east bench of the golf course. At the City Council Coun-cil meeting on Oct. 21, City Council members explained that with the recent reconfiguration reconfig-uration of the golf course, the slope on the east bench has been drastically changed. In addition, a path and rail have been installed, making sledding sled-ding in this area no longer feasible. Safety is paramount; therefore, strict enforcement will be followed. Heart patients treated in record time Caleb Warnodc DAILY HERALD A few weks ago, 82-year-old Arthur "Dick" Say of Orem was trying to replace a leaky disposal under his kitchen sink when he started having chest pains. His wife thought he'd "probably hurt a muscle," he said. I But it soon became clear he was having a heart attack. at-tack. His wife called an am bulance. M What th Say f; didn't know was that, the Orem city fmbufance they called happens to be one carrying car-rying a new technology that lets paramedics work with doctors to diagnose heart problems while en route to the emergency room. As a result of the new technology, called a 12-lead EKG, which is now transmitted transmit-ted from the ambulance, it took a mere 25 minutes from the moment Say arrived at the hospital until the blockage block-age in his heart had been cleared. " That response time not only saved Say's heart from damage, but it also means Dick Say now holds the record as the fastest rescue of this type in the history of Timpanogos Regional Hospital. Hos-pital. They had me in that operating op-erating room so fast," Say said. "1 could not imagine it being that fast." The rescue moved so quickly that by the time Say's wife reached the emer- We are not a gym. t ; We are not a social halt ' . We are selling a result. "They did an excellent job thank you," said Say, who returned to the hospital for an interview on Thursday. Orem paramedics, working work-ing with Timpanogos Regional, Re-gional, are the only rescue workers in Utah County that provide the new technology in ambulances, said Dr. Eugene Eu-gene Zanofli. The new technology has cut in half the time it takes to open a blocked artery coftipared to fast year, said ZaroJli, who performed Say's surgery. The new EKC provides quadruple the amount of information about a heart patient's condition, con-dition, and transmits that mformation to the hospital while the patient is still in the ambulance. This allows the emergency room staff and a cardiologist to know exactly what needs to be done when the patient arrives, rather than having to spend time doing additional diagnosis. "As soon as you can open a blood vessel back up, it saves heart tissue," Zanolli said. "It is an old cliche that time is heart muscle. The quicker we work, the better the results." Thanks to the new EKG technology, "We are in the top 1 percent of the nation in last six months," when it comes to response time, he said. The investment in the new equipment has not come cheap. Orem has paid up to $70,000 to equip four ambulances, ambu-lances, said Ryan Peterson, a fire captain with the Orem Department of Public Safety who oversaw the project. The project has taken two and a half years to get in place. "Orem Public Safety is very progressive in relation . to trffcatment and iflgervention, Peterson said "W try to stay on the cutting edgf of EMS t technology. We do everything we can to provide the highest high-est quality of patient care to our customers." For its part, Timpanogos Hospital has paid $25,000 for the equipment needed need-ed on its end, Zanolli said. Both men said the technology will eventually be the standard of care in Utah, though it will likely take years for aU ambulance ambu-lance services to equip themselves. them-selves. (. Within days, the new EKG system will be even more efficient because doctors here will be able to receive data from the EKG on hand-held devices so they can help diagnose a heart patient when they are away from the hospital or en route to the hospital, Zanolli said.
