As nearly as we can tell, he was a noblemanthe noble-manthe VALUE account that SPEAK I read called him a "kind nobleman," which makes me feel good about how things turned out. Sadly, this kind nobleman was devastated by the death of his wife. Lost in sorrow and despair, he frittered away his inheritance, and by the time his three daughters were old enough to be married he was impoverished. My daughter, Beth, is anticipating anticipat-ing marriage sometime during 2009, and as a result I'm the one who is going to be facing a life of poverty and servitude). Upon hearing of this man's plight, the generous Bishop Nicholas of Myra concocted a plan to provide this family with money for an appropriate dowry for each of the three girls. One night he rode his white horse (I have no idea how we know that Bishop Nicholas rode a white horse, but we don't know the kind nobleman's name history or mythology is nothing if not whimsical in the facts it chooses to retain) to the nobleman's noble-man's house, climbed to the roof and dropped three bags of gold coins down the chimney. The three daughters had just washed their stockings and had hung them to dry by the chimney, so when they awoke the next morning they each found a bag of gold in their stockings. Jackson Jack-son received the surprise news about the scholarship from Zions Bank's Pleasant Grove branch manager Scott Thomas on Dec 16 at the branch. Open to all Utah and Idaho students ages 13-18, Zions Pays for A's offers cash incentives for good grades. Teen students simply take their most recent report cards from the current academic year into any Zions Bank location. They'll receive $1 per "A" deposited into their Teengreen savings accounts, or 50 cents per "A" if they opt for cash. For each "A" on their report cards, students receive automatic entries into one of 182 drawings for scholarship money worth up to $1,000. Earlier this year, Jackson brought her straight "A" report card into Zions Bank's Pleasant Grove office. Her name was selected randomly in a drawing draw-ing among entrants from that branch. Students have until Jan. 23, 2009, to submit their most recent re-cent term report cards for the winter scholarship savings account ac-count drawing. Students need not be customers of Zions to participate. More information is available online at www. zionsbank.compays4as. "We at Zions Bank are thrilled to offer cash rewards to teens with 'As.' In homes all around the world this week, the tradition of leaving Christmas stockings out by the chimney or otherwise other-wise for Saint Nicholas to fill will be anxiously and joyfully observed. As a child, I loved my Christmas Christ-mas stocking. Mom made all of us one out of red felt and white furry material, decorated with bells and sparkly stars and spangles. It didn't even bother me much that she had written "Joey" across the top of it, even though I never really liked that nickname. How excited can you be about a name you share with baby kangaroos? Our stockings were hung on the fireplace mantel throughout through-out the days leading up to Christmas as part of our family Christmas decorations. But on Christmas Eve we took them off the mantel and placed them on the living room chairs and sofas in expectation of them being filled (and therefore way too heavy to hang on the mantel) man-tel) by Santa. I loved knowing most of what was in there even before I looked and I loved knowing that there would always be a surprise sur-prise or two. But for me as a child, my Christmas stocking stock-ing was always about what I was going to receive in it. It wasn't until years later, when I had children of my own, that Christmas stockings became an instrument of giving. That's sort of the way it is with Christmas in general, isn't it? As children it's about what we receive. As adults it is more about what we give. And at some point in time, if we are lucky, we realize that there is a precious reason for all the giving giv-ing and receiving something that imbues all of it with rich meaning and soulful understanding. under-standing.
