Warner NORTH COUNTY It's a little hard to read, but it's there next to the others. Rhett Nelson's signature. It's now on the contract in a frame that is headed to the trophy case. The idea started before the 2008 season started. Why not have each player become accountable ac-countable for their actions? Ask each player to give the team a total commitment. And so it happened and turned into this: "I will never quit on my teammates. "I will sacrifice for my team. "I will do whatever it takes for my team. "I will leave everything on the field." Nelson signed the document along with his teammates. Nelson lived up to his signature and so did his teammates. The results? We'll the results were amazing. amaz-ing. Timpanogos won its first ever state 5A baseball title and Nelson went 10-0 as a pitcher. Nelson He batted .44 1 in region re-gion play and he hit .421 in the state tournament. As a result the Daily Herald has selected Nelson as the 2008 Valley Player of the Year. "Thank you," Nelson said after learning of the honor. "I'm flattered There are a lot of great players in the Valley. This could have gone to so many different players even on our own team." Nelson, a junior, used the combination of a fastball, slider and split-finger fastball to go 3-0 in the state tournament and emerge as one of the state's top pitchers. His fastball has been clocked as high as 91, but his best pitch is his hard slider that has a sharplate break to it. MARIO RUIZNorth County signed pledging, among other Owlz lights out in season opener Jared Lloyd NORTH COUNTY The last time Orem Owlz-took Owlz-took the field, they competed for 16 innings to knock off the Great Falls White Sox 3-2 and win the Pioneer League Championship on Sept. 14, 2007. Tuesday night the Owlz picked up where they left off. The Owlz and visiting Ogden Raptors battled in a classic Pioneer League season sea-son opener at Brent Brown Ballpark in Orem in which four hours and 12.5 innings wasn't enough to determine a winner. Finally, after almost four extra frames and a delay after af-ter the lights went out unexpectedly, unex-pectedly, the Owlz pulled out the 6-5 win. With two outs in the bottom of the 13th inning, in-ning, Angel Castillo hit a fly ball to right field. The Ogden outfielder slipped, allowing Darwin Perez to score the winning run from third base. After the teams battled to a 3-3 tie through 10 innings, Odgen appeared to be in control con-trol in the top of the 11th as it pushed two runs across the board. But Orem fought back with a pair of runs of their own to tie the score.
