Garden four raises money for at-risk children Marc Haddock NORTH COUNTY STAfF Most garden tours are held in the spring or early summer, sum-mer, when the gardens are just starting. But the Fall Garden Tour, to be held this Saturday and sponsored by the Alpine Summit Programs, gives gardeners an opportunity to see breathtaking gardens and yards after a summer of growth. "In the fall the flowers have had a chance to come into bloom, and the yards actually look more finished," said Paula Loscher, who works for the Alpine Summit Sum-mit Programs, which serves at-risk and disadvantaged students throughout Alpine School District. The Fall Garden Tour, now in its sixth year, attracts at-tracts between 300 and 400 visitors and helps to raise funds for scholarships to help participants of the Summit Programs get a college edu-cation. edu-cation. Eleven gardens in Cedar Hills, American Fork and Highland will be featured this year. Tickets for the tour can be purchased in advance for $4 per person for entrance to all 11 gardens, or for $6 the day of the tour. Tickets are available at Deseret Book 2 -t.tr. news There is an Elder Quest dinner din-ner on Sept. 13 at 6 p.m. at the Chillon Reception Center, 710 E. Center St. in Spanish Fork. Elder Quest President Joan Hahn will present the teachers and classes for fall 2006 at the dinner. I Hours The Orem Senior Friendship Center is located on 93 N. 400 East, Orem, and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. The center phone number is 229-7111. 229-7111. I Driver Safety The center will be hosting the AARP Driver Safety Course on Sept. 13 and Sept. 14, Nov. 8 and Nov. 9. The class runs Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon. I Health fair The annual senior health fair at the South Towne Expo Center is Oct. 20. The gardens will be open Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. The ticket includes a garden guide with a map and brief descriptions of each garden on display. Summit Programs cater to students who are in state custody cus-tody and in foster care. "Many of them don't have real families," Loscher said. This is the main fundrais-ing fundrais-ing event for the program, and the school uses the money for scholarships for students who have been enrolled in the school. The longer a student attends the Summit program schools, the more scholarship money is available. Summit High School, one of the Summit Programs, moved this year to share the building with the new East Shore Elementary in Orem. But while East Shore focuses on students completing packets pack-ets outside of schools, Summit Sum-mit High has a more structured struc-tured program and a closed campus. The program also operates a junior high unit at Orem Junior High School. Letters to the Editoronline www.heraldextra.com Back To School Special Now that the kids are back in school Xx , if Obituaries Gertrud Wagner Storrs 1926-2006 Gertrud passed away peacefully peace-fully at her home in Bellevue, Washington on July 24, 2006 surrounded by her loved ones after a long battle with Multiple Mul-tiple Sclerosis. She was born in Wiesbaden, Wies-baden, Germany to Wilhelm and Maria Wager. Having moved to the United States, she married Val B. Storrs on January 25, 1961 and resided in American Fork. In July of 1962 they moved to Bellevue, Washington. She will be most remembered remem-bered as a loving wife, mother and grandmother. Gertrud loved sharing time and vacations vaca-tions with her family. She had a kind heart and a wide William William Ray Ellison, lifetime resident of American Fork and beloved husband, father, grandfather, grand-father, and great-grandfather, peacefully passed away on Sunday, September 3, 2006. Bill was born April 14, 1923 in Provo, Utah to Alfred Ray and Emma Alicia Bates Ellison. Elli-son. He was the fourth of six children and enjoyed a close relationship with his brother and sisters throughout through-out his life. He graduated from American Fork High School where he was active in student government and sports. While attending Utah State, he was drafted into the army and served in the South Pacific throughout WWII. Bill married his high school sweetheart, Florence Irene Shelley, Shel-ley, in the Salt Lake Temple on February 25, 1946. He joined his father as co-owner and operator of Ellison Dry Cleaners for 27 years. He also worked for the Utah Department of Transportation, Transporta-tion, retiring in 1987. "Grandpa Bill" was the devoted de-voted patriarch of a family of six children, 26 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren. He was always present at family ordinances, ball games and performances per-formances and will be greatly missed. He is survived by his wife, Irene, and children: Mary Ann Williamson; Rick Ellison (Kris); Ray Ellison (Janet); Sharlene Ricks (George); Jim Ellison (Bev); Janet Lewis (Bob); a sister, Joan Jones (Cliff). Preceded in death by his parents, sisters: Faye Beck, Helen Fulkerson, Beth De-vitt, De-vitt, and a brother Harold Ellison.
