OREM AUTO ELECTRIC 6th North and State Orem-Geneva, Utah Phone 0G52-R1 cold weather the pollen grains which bring about fertilization cannot germinate. Natural hor- jmones or growth regulating chemicals released in the flower as a result of fertilization are not produced. Without these hormones fruit does not develop. Now one of the things we Utahns prize most about our climate cli-mate is its cool nights. It would seem likely that these cool nights are partly responsible for blossom drop in our cannery and garden tomatoes. Night temperatures temper-atures below 59 degrees after tomatoes are planted in Utah are fairly common. Hormone Sprays What shall we do? Both the Michigan and California Agricultural Agric-ultural Colleges suggest the trial use of artificial plant hormones in order to insure early fruit set and development. The material suggested is a spray of phenoxy-acetic phenoxy-acetic acid. Stock solutions of this hormone can be obtained from Dow Chemical Company PHONE COLLECT. LEHI 216W Lehi, Utah NOT AN dealers under the trade name of Sure-S"t, and from American Chemical Paint Company dealers deal-ers under the trade name f osn-ato-Tone. Several other compan ies are also expected to stock it in unaer meir own res pective trade names. These fruit setting hormone sprays must be used with extreme ex-treme caution- They must be used in a water-diluted form exactly ex-actly according to manufacturer's manufactur-er's directions, or dire results follow. Dr. Wittwer reports that the spray should be applied to the flower clusters only. Dousing Dous-ing the foliage has caused freakish freak-ish distortions of the leaves and stems. Drs. P. A. Minges and L. D. Mann of the University of California warn that even spraying spray-ing the flower clusters will cause some injury to the tomato plants and that fruit quality may be lowered. It is therefore susgest-ed susgest-ed that the hormone sprays be used only until good tomato growing weather arrives- In Michigan, tomato growers report good results with the use of homone sprays. In California, however, "use on late summer or fall market tomatoes or on the canning crop is of doubtful value." Cold temperature is not the only cause of poor fruit set of tomatoes. A great deal of work has been done in Utah and other states on the fruit setting problem prob-lem with tomatoes- Air temperature temper-ature may be too high as well as too low. This situation eliminates elimin-ates commercial tomato production product-ion in such areas as southern Florida and southern Texas during dur-ing the summer months. The Texas Agricultural Experiment Station recently released a tomato tom-ato variety called Summerset to help home gardeners solve this problem. Hot weather in Utah at certain times undoubtedly undoubted-ly has reduced fruit set. To have the best possible fruit set, any tomato grower must (1) maintain good but not excessive soil fertility, (2) avoid root pruning from excessive cultivation, (3) keep soil moisture moist-ure available, but not waterlog his soil, and (4) grow a variety adapted to local conditions. (1) FERTILITY OF SOIL. Fruit will not set properly if the soil is too rich in nitrogen, either from excessive application of manure or from excessive commercial com-mercial fertilizers such as ammonium am-monium culphate or ammonium nitrate. The plants grow too rank and large, and blossoms that set are few. On the other hand, to obtain a heavy tonnage of plant and fruit the land must be fertile. Tomato plants set fruit when enough sugars are manufactured manufactur-ed and accumulated to cause fruit buds to develop and grow into flowers and fruits. Current recommendations of the Utah State Agricultural College Col-lege are the folloing amounts of nitrogen and phosphorous, 200 to 400 pounds of 16-20-1 (1 part nitrogen to 1.25 parts phospate); 300 to 400 pounds of 10-20-0 (1 part nitrogen to 2 parts phosphate); phos-phate); 500 to 700 pounds of 4- 12-0 (1 part nitrogen to 3 parts phosphate); or 200 to 300 pounds of 11-48-0 (1 part nitrogen to 4.35 parts phosphate). Ordinary cow or horse manure man-ure contains about four pounds of nitrogen per ton (equal to about 20 pounds of ammonium sulphate). Sheep or poultry manure man-ure contains about eight pounds of nitrogen per ton. If manure is used or if your tomato plants are Inclined to grow too rank and big, use a commercial fertilizer containing contain-ing a relatively large amount of phosphate in comparison to its nitrogen content, such as the 4-12-0 or 11-48-0- If your land is known, to be low in nitrogen and you want more foliage growth, use a fertilizer fer-tilizer high in nitrogen in relation relat-ion to ts phosphorous content, such as the 16-20-0 or the 10-20-0.
