WHICH IS NOW IN THE FIELD. UNDER THIS CONTRACT SUGAR BEET PRICES SHOULD BE SUBSTANTIALLY HIGHER THAN PRICES WHICH LAST. YEAR'S CROP BROUGHT. THIS IS MAINLY DUE TO THE FACT THAT SUGAR PRICES HAVE RECENTLY ADVANCED AND SUGAR PRICES ARE EXPECTED TO BE MORE FAVORABLE TO TOE GROWER. Tbis improvement in sugar prices followed fol-lowed the Secretary of Agriculture's action ac-tion in making his official estimate of consumption of sugar for 1949 at a level low enough to strengthen the sugar mar-. mar-. ket, and to indicate probable further advances ad-vances in sugar prices. In support of this belief the Secretary of Agriculture recently said: "DOMESTIC SUGAR PRICES SHOULD BE HIGHER IN 1949 TIIAIN IN 1948. THE PRESENT WHOLESALE PRICE OF REFINED SUGAR AT 8 CENTS A POUND IS A-BOUT A-BOUT ON CENT BELOW THE PRICE OBJECTIVE DEFINED IN THE SUGAR ACT." We recommend that farmers plant a full acreage of sugar beets in 1949 to protect their allotment in the event quotas are applied and we are forced to restrict our acreage on the basis of "past history." .
