Show OREM-GENEVA TIMES SPOTLIGHTING UTAH Gunlhcr's Chapter on Ulah "Seeing ourselves as others see us" might aptly describe John Gunlher's chapter on Utah in his current book, "Inside U. S. A" Gunther, by the way, is well read in America and such books as "Inside Latin America," Ameri-ca," "Inside Asia," "Inside Europe," Eu-rope," etc., have been well received, re-ceived, for he is one of America's Ameri-ca's best known authors. To fay the least, Utalm's especially es-pecially Mormons, will get a tremendous wallop out of his chapter on the Beehive state. Gunlher's version of "What Makes Ulah Tick" is well told. He has the ability to see behind the scenes, to get the feel ot the subject from several angles. His discussion of the Mormon Church, political trends, pow-ers-that-be, and poligamy is extremely ex-tremely fair and impartial, considering con-sidering the fact that it is noi tasy to walk into a community and find out what makes it tick, unless one is well grounded in newspaper reporting and writing writ-ing as is Gunther. Of Governor Herbert B. Maw, Gunther says: "He is a former professor of oratory and one ot the best public speakers in the United States . . few . people seem to know him well . . wher a man does get close, Maw will be apt to win him." Of LDS President George Albert Al-bert Smith, Gunther says: "He is a man without guile, 76 eurs old, clear spoken and practical " Gunther came to Utah two years ago this month and representatives repre-sentatives of the Utah State Department De-partment of Publicity and Industrial In-dustrial Development took him to see Bingham Canyon, the Geneva Ge-neva Steel plan and the Magna smelters. He constantly asked questions and made notes. For those who enjoy spicy reading, John Gunther's "Inside U. S. A." fills the bill, especially the chapter chap-ter on Utah. "The Meaning of the Mormon Migration in American History," is the title of a statement made before the senate of the United States, March 19, 1947 by Sen. Elbert D. Thomas of Utah. The statement, read before the senate, sen-ate, has been ordered printed in the Congressional Record. A copy of the Record has been sent by Senator Thomas to Commissioner Com-missioner Rulon S. Howells of the Utah Department of Publicity Publi-city and Industrial Development and which in brief ' points out that 1947 is Utah's centennial 1 MORGAN'S LIME & CINDER BLOCK CO. The movements were: the march of the Mormon battalion; the great trek across the plains by Brigham Young and his followers; follow-ers; the trip of Sam Brannon and his Mormon associates around the Horn to San Francisco and the decisive journey of the devout de-vout settlers carrying the Bible and the plow into Oregon territory. terri-tory. "These four movements" said Senator Thomas, "did make certain cer-tain that the intermountain and Pacific coast country would be American." Included also in the Appendix of the Congressional Record at Washington, D. C- at the request of Senator Thomas is a lecture given at the University of Utah, February 19, 1947 by Dr. Walter P. Cottam titled "Is Utah Sahara Sa-hara Bound?" Dr. Cottam pointed point-ed out that serious range and watershed problems exist' in Utah, that they are definitely our concern and that to prevent vast areas of Utah becoming Sahara Sa-hara bound ranges must be re-vegetated, re-vegetated, livestock and big game population adjustments made and a course pursued that wonld tend to return Utah range lands to their primeval state. A YEAR TO PAY A Norwegian destroyer, serving with the British navy, intercepted and disabled a Nazi submarine In the North sea. When the Nazis realized re-alized that their vessel rnlfjht sink any minute, they began leaping into the water. The Norwegian commander com-mander ordered his crew to pull the Nazis aboard. Fut it became an endless task, with Nazis bobbing up alongside the destroyer without a letup. The Norwegian officer began to wonder if he had run into a new and larger type Nazi U-boat. The way the Nazis were being pulled aboard indicated a much bigger crew than the undersea craft was known to carry. As he pondered this possibility possi-bility he walked to the other side of the destroyer and discovered the answer. After the Nazi crewmen were pulled aboard on one side of the destroyer, de-stroyer, the Norwegians carried them to the other side of the craft and heaved them into the sea again. Too Bad!
