As the result of the National Campaign against illiteracy being be-ing staged in Mexico, more than 400,000 persons ranging in age from 12 to 50 years, have become be-come illiterate. This campaign, started in an effort to supply teachers for elementary schools, has expanded into a drive to es tablish 60,000 schools fully staff-led staff-led to teach an estimated ,d00,-! ,d00,-! 000 children. It is hoped that within five years every adult in Mexico will know how to read and "write. Strikes in Africa Negroes in North Africa are for the first time using the methods meth-ods of white strikers, 2,000 of them picketing the Union Steel Corporation's mills in Transwaal and preventing operation. The strikers are demanding a four cent wage boost, and insist that they are out on strike, but the employers retort that the work ers have been discharged. WANTED - CHICKEN OF TOMORROW National prize of $5,000, and $3,000 for regional prizes, con-tributed con-tributed by the ureal Atlantic and Pacific Tea Company, and additional state prizes, contributed contrib-uted by various Utah business institutions, are announced by Dr. Carl Frischkneckt of the Utah State Agricultural College, chairman of the Utah Stale com mittee sponsoring the contest for "The Chicken-of-Tomorrow . The objective is to develop meatier chickens chickens tha will grow faster on less food and give all Americans with a fondness for chicken dinnerr even greater enjoyment than they have had in the past. Dr. Frischknecivi stresses the fact that facilities for a large scale operation are not necessary neces-sary for contestants to partici pate. Only 50 to 300 baby chicks are needed to start and anyone is eligible to enter 4-H club members; Future Farmers, both boys and girls; owners of small backyard flocks; profes sional groups anyone who will start with 50 to 300 chicks- Thir effort may result in a new breed of chicken an improvement of any existing breed or cross bred chicken. The contest will cover a three-year three-year period, with the first setting set-ting date of eggs September 2 1946- The $5,000 grand award will go to the breeder whose entry attains the highest score when judged for both economy and table quality in the final contest in 1948. The $3,000 in regional awards will go to the winning contestants contest-ants in the regional contest In 1947. The state programs in 1946 and the state and regional contests in 1947 will give every entrant an opportunity to com pare his results with those attained at-tained by others. To be eligible for final com petition an entrant must have participated in at least one of the two previous years. In order to have all entries the same age for fair judging 't is necessary to have them hatched at the same time. A dressed poultry show will be held during the Christmas Christ-mas holidays and all entries will be on display. Business firms of the state are backing the contest by do nating 50 baby chicks to each of 25 boys or girls to be selected by the State Committee. These chicks are to be raised according accord-ing to the rules for the contest and entered in the December iudging at which time certifi cates of quality, ribbons and cash prizes will be given.
