Hair "CAM YOU FACE FACTS?" Hi Folks: There was a lull at the U. P. Cafe, a quiet afternoon. I was pouring a customer a second cup of coffee. He was reading the headlines of the evening paper. . , . ,"1 see that Geneva Steel is operating soon," he said. "It looks that way, t agreed, "and that will maker the Orem folks very happy," I added. YepM said he "but the next question is. can the Oremltes face facts?'' "Sure," I said, quite confident that we fire Hot mental Infants any more, "but why askT Wow don't answer," he said, "But how do you folks stand on the Negro problem?" Then I started remembering how badly we behaved toward the colored people When they came to Geneva to help In the construction of the steel plant It's time for every intelligent person to give the Issue due con sideration, for soon we will be faced with the' Negro problem again. "No nation, no people, can long endure In peace and safety if racial and religious , hatred, and class bitterness set at naught, Christian Brother- hOOd." . . , Ask yourself are tne Aegros God's children? Are Oremltef yesterday folks - dressed In today's to-day's latest .fashions? Are we democratic and christian spirited? spirit-ed? Are we smug , and intolerant? intoler-ant? Will we accept the Itali ans, Slavs, Irish, Jews, the Ger mans, as desirable citizens, to make homes and settle In our midst? How will be handle the problems of a great industrial community? What nave we to offer these people that will drift into our midst? Are we a good example of our pioneer ideals? Are we a tolerant people? "BUT WHAT ABOUT THE NEGRO PROBLEM?" How can we believe that 13 million brown and black citl-ipm citl-ipm nrw inferior -menlallv. physically, politically as well as socially, economically ana educationally. The difference between principle and practice cannot be brought into the open without unbearable confussion of hypocracy, Intolerance, lack of christian principles, and dem ocratic doctrines. "REDCAPS" Two Redcaps sauntered into the cafe for their evening meal before train time. They took seats at the bottom counter for the colored boys are very conscious con-scious of the white man's attitude atti-tude toward the Negros. I looked look-ed at them in a new light, as individuals, and I wondered, if we were colorblind and Judged people by the quality of the soul and mind, where these boys would stand in our humble opinion. They are intelligent. with ideals as high as the finest fin-est white boys. They both fought in the war, and both have medals of merit in their different differ-ent branches of the service. They are modest they are polite, and definitely not beaten down in manner. I have known of them for months and I honestly hon-estly believe if their skins were lighter, the world would dub them just two splendid Ameri can youths. Ask the innocent, the wise, the simple, the tolerant, the very good in our Town where they stand on the Negro question. ques-tion. Ask yourself, are you prejudiced against the colored race? and why? Have they a place in the scheme oi tmngs of Orem or America? Will Orem set aside a place and build a town as desirable as Orem, for the coloreds, or will they permit them to live and mingle with us as will the Jews the other denominations that a great industrial center will attract. I haven't the answer, an-swer, but it's time for the citizens citi-zens to give broadminded, unbiased un-biased thought. ATOMIC-WAR DEFENCE PLANS Elaborate plans for the defence de-fence of the United States in case of an atomic 'warfare being be-ing drawn up by the government govern-ment military leaders. Long- range bombers and guided mis siles carrying atomic explosives are the primary weapons. Airborne Air-borne troops take on great im portance. Submarines and air craft carriers of great size dominate dom-inate planning for sea warfare. Offense, through immediate and devastating retaliation in event of attack, is accepted as the one defense in future war. Entering largely into the plans of the military experts is the B-S6, a bombing plane already developed develop-ed by the army and navy, which can carry a bomb load of 10,000 pounds for 9,000 miles and return. re-turn. This means that such planes based in Northern Canada Can-ada near the Artie Circle can reach across the North Pole and drop atomic or other bombs in Europe and as far south as Asia and Northern India. Moreover, Russia, using similar planes and operating from bases well within with-in her own coast line, could drop bombs on the United States as far south as New Orleans. MAGNETIC SUBMARINE DETECTOR ' A new war secret, the "magnetic "mag-netic airborne detector," that points unerringly at submarines beneath the water, has been disclosed dis-closed by scientists at Columbia University. The finger is small enough to be attached to the tail end of a plane or trailed from the end of a cable. It picks up and points to the magnetic mag-netic disturbance of a steel ship. .The finger begins pointing point-ing in a wide cone above a sub marine. The plane then circles until the magnetic devise says the submarine is below at the right angle for dropping a depth bomb- AVAILABILITY OF DRINK There is now one licensed re tail liquor store, saloon or beer parlor in the United States for about every one hundred families. fami-lies.
