To date the experiments have covered only the adult thrip of pears and cherries on some one nundred and fifty acres. With an infestation from an average of six to twenty adult thrips per bud the need for some control was heart felt. Check plots were kept on three average farms of Arch Pulham, Ed Long, and Julian Hansen. The first thrip showed on March 29 and 30 at Arch Pul-ham's, Pul-ham's, and Ed Long s iarm. It seemed where there was air drainage there were fewer thrips and they came oul later. Due to heavy weather it was not possible to spray the pear and cherry buds before they opened up, so spraying waited until April 13 and 14 where in three mixtures were used on these separate farms. On the Arch Pulham farm an average of twenty thrip per bud counted showed 100 percent control of the thrip: sixty hours after spraying time. Mr. Pulham Pul-ham sprayed with DDT, 2 lbs-! of fifty percent Wettable and! one half pound of depositee per I one nundred gallons of water. The weather was warm and the fruit cluster clear open to achieve these results. At Ed Long's the spray mix ture of four gallons of A von oil and 2 lbs. of SO percent wetable DDT per one hundred gallons of water was used. Results show ed that in 72 hours a kill of 88 percent was found and that six days after spraying not a live thrip could be found. Julian Hansen sprayed cherries cher-ries on his farm and the cluster of cherries were closed at the time of spraying. Results were 'jl!.. . .,. ...... ON THE FARM 8 t OOT TRAILER ALL STEEL! Mrs. Anna Pautz, P.O. Box 825 Vancouver, Wash. very slow at the start due to wet weather. However In three days there was a fifty percent kill and at the end of six days 95 percent control was had. Hansen used 8 percent lime and sulphur' and two lbs. of SO percent per-cent wetable for spraying. From other sprayings thru-out thru-out the county it seems these two results are very definite. That good results and control of thrip, regardless of the infec tion can be had by spraying DDT on the trees either before the bud opens or after the cluster opens. If sprayed during this time when the thrips are up and the buds closed, results will be very slow.
