'--. and PLANT GRAIN FOR LIVESTOCK Livestock and poultry growers grow-ers face an uncertain Situation due to a recent order bv th government restricting teivHno wheat, according to A. F of r i n.nen, extension agronomist at Utah State Agricultural College, County Agent S. R. Boswell announced. Utah is a cereal importing state, depending upon surpluses of other areas for feeding livestock, live-stock, the agronomist said, and while the period between now and harvest appears most critical, criti-cal, yet in the year ahead we may still face restrictions in order to meet food needs. But adjustments can be marl partly relieve the local situation e stated. In 1945, a total of 66,000 acres of spring wheat, 150,000 acres of barley, and 47,000 acres of oats were harvested in Utah, Prof. Bracken said. Goals for these crops in 1946 call for seeding 70,000 acres of spring wheat, 160,000 acres of barley, with no change for oats. The high acre yield of 1945 likely will not be repeated again this coming year, the agronomist predicted, but if average yields are produced, Utah fanners will grow as much barley and spring wheat as in 1945, provided acreage goals are reached. To meet critical world-wide needs for additional wheat as food. Clinton P. Anderson, An-derson, Secretary of Agriculture has issued a recent order asking that spring wheat goals be Increased In-creased five per cent more. This would mean a total of 73,-500 73,-500 acres of Utaii, he said. Farmers can comply with this order much to their advantage advant-age by substituting wheat for oats and, to produce more feed, substituting barley for oats, according ac-cording to the agronomist. If the average yield of these grains is multiplied by respective digestable feed values, barley produced 1604 pounds to an acre, wheat 1527, and oats 881 pounds. From these yields,' if barley is given a value of 100, wheat only drops to 94, but oats falls to the low level of 55. Thus to meet this critical situation it is to the advantage of farmers, feeders, and those who need food to plant oat acreage to wheat first and barley bar-ley second, Prof. Bracken said. Americans are smoking SO per cent more cigarettes than before the war and show little signs of tapering off in the next few years, the Agricultural department de-partment discloses. In the first eight months of 1945, civilians used cigarettes at the yearly average of one hundredpacks for every man, woman and child. Cigars, though losing in popularity since World . War I, still average thirty-six in year for each American. "Boldness of the liquor traf-fic traf-fic in its defiance of social welfare," declares Mrs. D, Leigh Colvin, president of the W. C. T.
