FIELD MICE DOING SERIOUS DAMAGE III; ORCHARDS fi Fruit; growers . have reported serious damage to trees from field mice during the past few Weeks. Examination of several orchards shows mouse damage to be worse this year than usuaL All orchards that are in sou or other cover crops for the winter should be examined carefully every two or three weeks. . If any Indications of field mice are found,' poison grain bait should be applied Immediately. , During v open winters,' mice work beneath the surface of the sod and may not only girdle the trunk but may also eat the bark from the large roots some distance, dis-tance, from the trees. In such cases, surface Indications give no idea of the extent of damage being be-ing 4one,Y.Jf "only a few signs Of mice, as indicated by their trails in - the cover crop, are found, bait should be applied. Very often mice are more numerous alone ditrh hani fence lines than farther out in the orchard.;. Such places should be watched carefully and kept well baited. . Care must be taken t bait is placed where livestock will not get at It. pd to use in applying the bait is to piace It In the grass or wv covered trails of the mice. Usually Usu-ally a quarter or half tea ful of grain in four or five places about each tree will control mice quite well. Another good practice prac-tice is to place two or three hands full of poison grain in an ; area of a square vard nr ta where mice trails are numerous. Cover the grain with several forks full of old hay or straw or weeds, s Three or four such htt stations distributed over an acre is sufficient. Old boards instead of hay thrown over the grain also makes a good cover for th ; bait station. The important thing- to ro. member is that mice do serious damage even in ODen wpnth and that sod or other cover crops in an orcnara at this time of year is an invitation to mice. Watch your orchard carefully. Even tuvcr imp nas Deeii disced well before now. It wm be worth your while to examine the 'orchard occasionally, said Clarence D. Ashton. assistant county agent.
