UM CO., fctw vo. SAFE BLOWN OPEN Burglars Made an Unsuccessful Raid on the Roy lance Produce Store Early This Morning. The produce store of W. M. Roy-lance Roy-lance was entered this morning about 4 o'clock by unknown parties and the doors of a large steel safe in the office were blown open, but the burglars did not get through the inner doors. They first raided William Carter's blacksmith shop on Wood street and secured a diill and brace. Then they effected an entrance through the rear doors of the store by tearing outsome wooden shutters replacing some glass windows which had been broken out. They drilled a half-inch hole through the outer doors of the safe just over the combination lock into the fireproof fire-proof composition lining of the door. Then they worked in some giant powder pow-der and some fuse with a cap and touched it off. The cxnlosion tore an jbloog 3x6 inch hole out of the solid steel door, and destroying the lock. John Carter was tried in the district court at Provo for lobbing the bank in this city last May le fore a jury of eiget: A. W. Miller, C. D. Glazier, Riuiel Williams, J. II. New lands, J. imes G. Haws, Samuel Ash by. V. C. flrovwi, Alfred Dunkley. Defendant was defended by Attorney Warner. The information st ated that defendant defend-ant and his unknown partner entered the Spriugville bank about 10 a. m. on the 28th of last May and robbed it of $2,37o, making their escape up Hobble Hob-ble creek canyon. Here they were overtaken, Maxwell captured and his comrade killed. The first witness called was A. O. Packard, assistant cashier, who testified that defendant and his partner entered the bank at that time and engaged him in a conversation, con-versation, drew their revolvers, ordered or-dered him to throw up his hands and took the money. James Whitmore testified that he found the defendant in Hobble creek canyon, and with William Clyde searched him. They found on him $l,li(X) in gold. Sheriff Storrs testified to a conversation had with defendant who admitted robbing rob-bing the bank. The defense offered no testimony. The jury brought in a verdict of guilty and the defendant received a sentence of eighteen years in the state penitentiary. Dreadful Nervous.
