Tim Censor emphasizes the expressed opinion of The Independent. Inde-pendent. We have nothing to alter, nothing to change, but we will be more specific so long as an invitation to do so lias been issued. In itn efforts to efb-ct h fusion of the silver forces, that paper not only re- in il" its Democratic fealty but til one dose has completely ,. swallowed Populism-and-Criine. The' Censor stands with one foot hujtlte Democratic platform and the other on the nondescript. It even declares, "no braver und better men are living than are they," Why, that is an nsser. tion no l'upuljslsever dare make ih the present of a respectable audience. It, is a political party made up of the discarded office iiolders from one or the other of the two great parties. To them ad. Long hince self respecting elements have avoided this mixture us they would a plague. Nothing can help a victim but umputation, und the saoner the amputation is performed the better. All self respecting people, excepting in the miserable miser-able stales of Kansas and Nebraska, Ne-braska, so made misen.be by Populistic jo'lutlon, long since have uniformly refused to even seriously consider any question of politics raised by " Populism-and-Oriine. "By their fruits, ye shall know them." There actually have been excellent suggestions put forward by this party, but the suggestions were htrangled by the midwife. Though the suggestions seemed M-ise, no other party cared to be held responsible as a partner of Populisin-and-Crime and go down in u knowingly deserved defat. Voted for. MANNA'S LKITKIt. The following letter has been published by nearly all I lie papers of the sla'e, and widely different comments have been made. Some of the Republican press have denounced it as an interference und an unwarranted unwarrant-ed impertinence. They are absolutely mistaken. Here is I ho letter: Ci.kvki.ani, Ohio, Aug. o, Hon. Clkn Miller, U. S. Marshal, 1S9S. Salt Lake City, Utah My Dear Sir: 1 have been iulormod that it. has been suggested sug-gested that the Republican party of Utah, at the next state convention, con-vention, indorse in its platform the free coinage of silver. As chairman of the National Republican Re-publican committee, charged with the duties of the position, 1 protest against the Republicans Republi-cans of any state taking such action. It would be clearly in opposition to the principles of the party as declared i.i the platform at the national convention con-vention at St. Louis, and I trust you will use your influence and efforts to the end that that declaration dec-laration may be sustained. Yours trulv, M. A. Hanna. lion Marcus Hanna is the national chairman of the Republican Re-publican party. While he has no right to dictate us to local matters, ho has an undoubted right to interfere when the so-calle so-calle l Republicans undertake to distort and destroy the plain text and intent of tho last national Republican platform. which declared unequivocally for "Protection, Reciprocity, and Sound Money." There is nothing in the national Republican platform which even squints at the free coinage of silver. In trying to capture the straight Republican Republi-can organization in this state, the lute silver Republicans are making what may prove to be a fatal mistake in foisting the cry, "Silver, Protection and Reciprocity." If the silverites should succeed, it would absolve the straight Republicans from being bound by the vote of the state convention, and that absolution abso-lution is guaranteed by Hon. Mark Hanna. - That is what his letter means. 'PI. . .1 ii uepuoiieiuis will follow silver is a mistake so far 119 Utah t , ....... . . - county is concerned, says The Enquirer, and it certainly voices the sentiment of the Springville Republicans, many of whom have declared they will vote for the opposition rattier than support sup-port a wriggler The Hon. h'rank J. Cannon has selected portions of the Populist platform, the Republican, Republi-can, the Woman's rights and the free silver portion of the Democratic platforms. The senator entertains the idea that by some kind of u hoouspocu9 lie can mix them all up to- gather, like a juggler or trickster and call it Democratic doctrine and by so doing the Democratic party of t li i 3 state ought to without with-out the least hesitation re-elect Iiimtothe United Status senate. Broad Ax. The Price curfew law which becaineeUectivo on last Tuesday will not bo allowed to become a dead letter. The town board proposes that the ordinance shall be strictly enforced. The movement is a worthy one and should have the moral sunnoit of the parents. Carbon County tUW 0Wi- Why should the man wli renounces protection be designated desig-nated a traitor any more than the one who refuses to subscribe to the gold standard? Ogdeu Standard. Both would be traitors. POLITICAL POINTS. The pioneer silver paucr of Utah. LOtfden Standard. The Silver City Star is absolutely correct when itsajs that Hon. Mark Manna's letter to Glen Miller "forever "for-ever settles even the slightest doubt as to Hie attitude of the national K"publicuii party on the tiuestion of bimetallism." It will lie a contemptible straddle oa the part of the Republicans to put iii as the state platform. '-.Silver, Protection o lid Reciprocity.' Any candidates who attempt to sneak into local olllce under such a banner will richly deserve th" defeat which surely will In their purl ion The silver plank which will bo incorporated in-corporated into the Republican state platform is a Republican grand stand play and vote catcher. Nother more, nothing less. They are vainly trying to serve two masters. The intelligent voter knows that it cannot be done. No man can be a Republican Hid a live silver man at the same time. -Car bun County News. It looks very encouraging to see a demand for coal miners in this place, but such is now the case. For some lime past work has been very slack, but, yesterday .Superintendent Hansen Han-sen was looking for practical miners, and up to last night had not secured ail he desired. We hope the demand will increase, so that all our citizens who have been obliged to seek work elsewhere may return hums. Coalville- Times. It is ruin ired that the straight Democratic leaders of the state have decided that those Democrats who favor fusion shall never run for office on the Democratic ticket, neither shall they have any of the pickings and crumbs such as appointments etc. This, undoubtedly, is intended to make the fusionists scarce in the state. But the Democratic leaders fool themselves if they think such a threat will drive the boys into line, Ogden Standard. The silver question is a vital one and no man deserves the support of the people for the most petty office, who is not unquallitledly opposed to the gold-bug crowd, their friends and backers. This letter from Hanna will force the. adminstration supporters sup-porters who want to make the mist of the old time prestige of the Republican Re-publican party to get on one side of the fence or the other. Southeast Utah can be counted on as standing solid for the principles it so nobly supported in the last campaign, regardless re-gardless of party names. The Lincoln Republicans nor the Jefferson Jeffer-son Democrats can Und a congenial political home in the same party with Mark Hanna. Grand Valley Times. The National V. G. T. Munger. As between the milder and stronger drinks, the former may be crowding out the latter, but we can not forget that ber drinking is a sore evil, that while diminishing the sales of whisky and wine, il creates an increasing market for itself, entices en-tices within its resorts those who would not be drawn into the grosser and more dangerous danger-ous resorts, develops a taste for stronger slimulants, and pro duces the drunken revel, bloated lorm and blasted life. It is quite amusing to read the addresses made before the liquor league conventions. The speakers almost in variably make special effort to inl'prin their listeners that the liquor business busi-ness is "legitimate." The frequency fre-quency with which they do thi leads one to 'believe tint not only l he liquor dealers, but the speakers themselves had some doubts about it. Think of a convention of dry. goods merchants mer-chants where the speakers con stantly assured themselves that their business was legitimate. Living Issues. A peor workingman told his wife, on awe.kenmg one morning, morn-ing, a curious dream which he had during the night. He dreamed that be saw coming toward him. in order, four rats. The first one was vejy fat, and was followed by two lean rats, the rear rat being blind. The dreamer was greatly perplexed as to what evil might follow, as it has been understood that to dream of rats denotes calamity. He appealed to his wife concerning con-cerning this; but she, poor woman, could not help him. His son, who heard his father tell the story, volunteered to be the interpreter. "The fat rat," he said, "is the man who keeps the saloon you go to so often, the two lean rats are my mother and me, and the blind rat, father, is yourself." Exchange. Robbed the (irave.
