The proposition to build the school hoiise met with strong opposition, and in the end was defeated after a livily discussion of the Question, pro and con. The matter of having a high school in connection with the Central school was brought up and met with a great deal of opposition, but at last it was voted to employ another teacher at the Central school next year, and teach the Nineth grade branches. The meeting which was called at the City Hall last Monday to hear the report of the committee which was appointed to look up the matter of securing the gOTernment lands in the canyons adjacent to Springville for range purposes, wasn't altogether a success. Like nearly all meetings called to discuss business of fublic interest to the city, the influential citizens showed their public spirit by staying away. There were about twelve people present, including the Independent reporter. Albert llarmer, chairman of the committee, called the meeting to order and explained the business to lie transacted, lie then went, onto ,iy that the committee had investigated investi-gated the matter and that the surveyor general had informed them that the only way for the citizens to secure the control of the range was by Squatter's rights by individuals going and locating the land, llarmer stated that Spanish Fork had a!-ready a!-ready put this plan in operation. The meeting then adjourned without taking any further action on the matter. La Grippe, Followed by Heart Disease, Oured by OR. MILES' HEART CURE. MB. C. "Tire men and women interested in organized temperance work in this country, arc, on the whole, very worthy people," writes ' Edward W. Bok in the May Ladies' Home Jour nal. "They are sincere, energetic and well-meaninit. But sometimes they lack that nicety and wisdom of judg ment which Is absolutely necessary In organized effort in order that the surest success may be won. They sometimes, unfortunately, allow their zeal to run away with them. This tendency was recently shown in one of their official statements which bewailed be-wailed the startling growth of intern perance in America during the year 1897. Many good people, to whoin the circular containing this statements sent, will be prone to believe this assertion. They have not the means at hand by which to verify such a statement, and will be made uncomfortable uncom-fortable by it, whereas, in reality, exactly ex-actly the opposite is the truth. There lias never been a time In America when every Indication pointed so strongly to a decrease of intemperance intemper-ance as the present. There has never been so little drinking as at present, and never such a strong tendency toward moderation in quarters where alcoholic indulgence is general. This is a fact impossible to controvert, be' cause the most careful figures bear out this very hopeful statement. THE LAST SESSION. Hunsrcrford Literary Society Closes for the Season. Burdette philosophizes in his humorous way on the modern "short cuts" to education, in an article arti-cle on "My Kindergarten of Fifty Years," in the May Ladies' Homo Journal. "A peddler," Mr. Burdette explains, "comes along: 'Want to practice medicine? Well, it will take you four, maybe five, years of the hardest kind of boning at this eld dust-yard of a school; you come with me and I'll sell you a diploma, good anywhere, that'll cost you only ten or twelve weeks' loafing and a hundred hun-dred dollars.' First thing we know we have a doctor in the class. Another An-other fakir comes along; finds a boy who wants to be a preacher; can preach a little, but he would like to be a theologian. 'All right,' the fakir says, 'got a degree of D. D. right here in the desk; cost you fifty dollars and an old sermon.' Hoy gets it, frames it, and hangs it up in his study. Wears his D. D. around in public, proud as the crow with the peacock feather. You initfht think these fellows would get a misfit some time, but they never do never. A tlfty-dollar degree fits a fl'ty-dollar man like the paper on the will. Same way with all the 'short cut' honors. The fakirs are good tailors; they can and to do them full justice, they do make their wares to tit their customers cus-tomers every time. And on popular class of 'instructors' in this line are the professors who teach 'sVirt cuts' to wealth. They do a free dispensary business with war-price profits, and they also keep a finishing school in Canada." After years of untold suffering from piles, P. V. Pursell of Knltnersville, Pa., was cured by using a single box of DeWitt's Witch Hazel Salve. Skin diseases such as eczema, rasl, pimples and obstinate sores are readly cured by this famous remedy.
