Springyille'9 streets are in fine' condition, compnritively, this season. The County road is in its usually horriblo condition. con-dition. Why is this? The Bee. Col. Warrum'u new paper, reached this joint. Saturday, Sat-urday, with n cheerful buzz. It is a lively creature, aud has a great career of usefulness before it. Success to The Bee. The Box Elder News hus changed hands and is now published pub-lished by Pascoe & Standing, with 'Mr. Standing as editor. It has been enlarged and is now a seven column folio, all home print. , The snow line is steadily Ascending the mountain tides. Farmers say there is far from being enough snow in the hills to keep the water supply up to the nerds of this section for irrigation purposes. The outcome of the Zola trail in France proves that that country has a most weak and cowardly government. The whole affair was a howling farce, in which the smallest atom of justice was lacking. The French ministry dared not allow Zola to be acquitted. X Utah man who is a veteran ortilerist hns in contemplation a device by which all the old obsolete smooth bore cannon now laying useless at the navy yards and arsenals may be made effective in our const dffencea. Every old muzzle loader i9 by an attachment made even more effective than a rifled cuunon. Rumors are rift to the effect that the Price Advocate recently published a special illustrated edition, but a copy has thus far failed to reach this office.'- Some of the brethren seem to be a little shy with their special editions, The Provo Utonian got one out, and by some strange accident a copy reached Spring, ville, and we promply secured it and have it filed away iu our safe along with the $ signs. Political circles at Salt Lake are becoming a little wrought up over (he candidacy of Col. Isaac Trumbo for the United Stitei Senatorship for this oiate. we are or the opinion that the Colonel's candidacy need cause no loss of sleep on the part of the brethren. There are too urrnuv Utah men willing . to serve the State in the capacity cap-acity of Senator to make Trumbo's ambition rery easy of fulfillment. lady meoiber succeeded in getting, get-ting, a law pasjed compelling ladies to remove their hats at theatrical performances. This was righteous act, but alt ladies evidently are not in sympathy With If na irai iIiau'ii of llm .... forraance given here last week by the J. J. Williams Co. One lady, when requested to remove her hat," declined to do so, and likewise declined to take a side seat. Either this law should be enforced or repealed. If the manager of the City haJl has not the power to enforce the regulations let him say so, and permit the other ladies to wear their hats, unless through proper prop-er courtesy to other people they should prefer not to. TUX CITY I'lilSTIS There is small encouragement for local printers when we con-siiJer con-siiJer tlm manner in which the City fathers dole- out t lie City printing. It looks at present as if the bulk of it would eo to Trovo to brace up ihe totlerin fortunes ot the lob printme establishment ot that city. Just how bending work to bankrupt itistitu'ioiis nt Provo is going to help Springville is n question. The Independent man firmly believes he has a kick coming. Just so long ns the Ci v fathers send their job printing out of town just so long will they find tli is kick registered with accuracy and vigor. The Independent man is not in business for his health. Neither is the Cily Council. Neither is the Recorder. All are healthy, hearty men. When they work for the City they manage to get pay for it. That is, of course, when ihey charge for their services. They all do a certain amount of work gratis. So does The Independent man. For some of his gratuitous services he gets the good will ot'llie citizens of Springville. For a great deal of it he gets nit! lie will continue his labors iu conveying to people abroad I he impression that he lives iu a lively, stirring, enter prising und prosperous city and be content with such appr elation us he niav tret. But whei lie does job printing for ihe City ho expects t get for it what it is worth, just us the City em ployes do for their services. A 111.. as we remarked belore, we are not in business for our health. W hen we are asked lor estimates on a job of printing we first determine what the paper will cost us; then what the labor required costs us; also what the ink C03ts us; then we calculate as narrow a margin of prolit as will safely cover the wear and tear of material, inter est on money invested, and a little extra against the time when we will be out of a job. Hie sum of the whole is the price of the job to the man who wants the work done. If the man thinks we are trying to rob him, he has but to ask for an explanation of the details of each item, and they will be given Business men find no grounds on which to dispute them. The City, through the Record er or Mayor, asks us for estimates on certain work, and they get them in accordance with the system laid down. Instead of asking for proof that the City is not being robbed, they proceed pro-ceed to Provo to a job shop which is taking desperute measures to hold itself up for a while longer. The proprietor will do most anything for a little ready money, and in order to get it ho gives a ruinously low estimate. He gls the work. How he expects to do n good job without loss to himself the devil only knows. The City of Springville, however, how-ever, has saved a couple of dollars oa (he deal when the expenses ex-penses of the Mayor and Recorder are deducted. The price of the job has also been sent out of town, but maybe in a couple of years a few cents of it will come back again, some how. If this is the policy to be pursued pur-sued The Independent man may as well save time by declining to give estimates. If, 119 a measure of economy, the City printing has to be done by some one at a loss, ho prefers that a Provo concern do it and suffer the loss. At the same time he wishes to propound an enquiiy to the tax payers of Springville, and it is this: "Is The Independent getting a square deal, everything considered?" con-sidered?" DU1FTISG WWAliDS WAR. Late advices from Havana tend to confirm the theory that the battleship Maine was blown up by a submarine mine laid, and probably set off,-by Spanish hands. In this event the Spanish nation will be held responsible for the damage. The mine may have been laid and fired by some wild, irresponsible, Spanish enthusiast, enthu-siast, without the knowledge or assistance of the Havana authcri- Was Never Weil But Hood's Sarsaparllla Has Civen Her Permanent Health. But at thejjame time, the Maine was representing represent-ing a friendly nation and was" at Havana on a peaceful mission, and the captain of the port was responsible for her safety. The course for this nation to pursue is to demand of Spain a lull and ample apology aud disavowal of all complicity in the uct; an indemnity covering the cost of the ship and the ti- ptnie account since the disaster, together with a sum sufficient to provide maintenance for the dependant families of thu dead officers and sailors. Let a refusal on the part ef Spain to settle on this basis be a signal for a resort to force ot arms, und the beginuing without hesitation a war which will cost the Spaniards all their American possessions. The Washington authorities talk of peace, and of avoiding a war. Warlike preparations ge merrily on, nevertheless. The official atmosphere is quiet, but it is surcharged with explosives, and in it is seen the calm which goes before a storm. Spain is practically bankrupt, and the home government is on the verge of a revolution. A storm must soon break from without or within, and the attitude of the Spanish ministry would seem to indicate that they preferred the chances of ruin in a loreigu war to those of attempting at-tempting to hold in check the passions of their own hot-hpa.Mj people. f " It has now become "the devil or the deep sea" with Spain. Her position is desperate from whatever point one may view it, and ultimate rum seems only a matter of a short time, whet her she pays an indemnity to save her honor or fights to protect her self from the consequences of treaclncry. ; ' ... 1 1 j Editor Howard, bachelor, of the Salina Press evidently hns no time for some of the amateur country editors of Utah. Tho present Censor man in particular particu-lar comes in for a roast, and the Press man doesn't do a thing to him. This what he said. The 7'ro tern editor of the Souther Censor, a Journal of education puw usneu in Kiennem, is already ove taxing his mental engine. In a polished and dignified editorial in last week s Censor he tried to convey the Idea that single men are more liable to Insanity than are married men aud heads of families. As this distin- quished scientific savant produces figures to hack his allegation, we are not Inclined to protest. One start ling fact is apparent. No man whose brain-box and alimentary canal be come fixedly united, need ever fear insanity. There are newspaper iiicn in Utah whose brains and bowels have become hopelessly entangled. A case of this kind is in Richfield. The action of the City authorities in making a move toward the suppression of the tin-horn gambling fraternity here seems to meet with general approval. There is another side of the story, and the gamblers will tell it. It will relate to the various healthy raflling schemes which have been worked this past winter in defiance of the same ordinance which is being invoked to cinch the tin-horns. If that ordinance is to be enforced, en-forced, it is proper aud right that every offender should be punished. There are other sinners abroad. The dances of lute at the Opera house arc assuming a greatly improved im-proved condition. The drunkenness and rowdyism which hare predominated predom-inated in some of the dances in the past, are now becoming things of the past. The adoption of the system which requires gentlemen to purchase tickets at the box office before entering enter-ing the hall, has had a decided effect for the better, as it keeps those out who have been in the habit of monopolizing monop-olizing the room which belongs to the dancers. The last tew dances held have been successes, and have been credits to the house. Payson Header Do It la Kusiness Style.
