In the report of Democratic Dominations last wetk The Independent In-dependent mentioned Joseph II. tfcott us a nominee for Councilman. Council-man. It should have read Joseph II. Slorrs. Though somewhat late in the season, building operations still continue in thu city. A large number of new residences will have been added to the City's adornment ere winter sets in. When you go to the polls this year, pick your men, and vote for the City's good. Both tickets present an array of material, and all shades of political and economic belief may be discovered. discov-ered. The l'rovo Enquirer is patting itself on the back and telling what it did for the late County Fair. The amount of the Enquirer' En-quirer' gall is only exceeded by wbfttthut sheet didn't do for the Fair. The deadly typhoid fever germ is multiplyingitself numerously numer-ously in Springville, and be don't half try, either. This city will wake up some day anil discover dis-cover that she lias u nicely befouled be-fouled water s,upply. During the past couple of weeks of wtt weather the wisdom of the Graveling ordinance was made manifest. On many n street there could bo found high imd dry walks where a year ago rto walk could bo found. Le! tlie good walk go on. The writer is in receipt of ftwr nice little boxes of beet sugar samples,, sent out by the American Beet Sugar Construction Con-struction Co., ol Chicago. Our usually angelic disposition has been sadly warped by the villiau-ous villiau-ous weather of the last few days, and this sugar comes in handy. An intolerable liordeofGy psies infested the city for a couple of days this week, but were finally run off by Marshal Clark. The festive hobo and his appeals for charity were meek and mild compared to these nomads and their importunities. They should receive a cool reception everywhere. every-where. Have Utah peopleever thought tout lhe$-00 grub stake required 1o reach the Klondike would go far towards developing many a rich lode right here at home? With the amount of mineral wealth to be uncovered in Utah, her people can ill u fiord to squander fund trying to conquer con-quer Alaska's barren wastes. The Independent has received for review a copy of a neat little pamphlet, which is n sort of an advance guard of Serj't R. Taylor Tay-lor Marshall's book. The pamphlet pam-phlet is from the press of J. M. Westwood, a local job printer. Serj't Marshall's theology is pretty deep for us, but we should imagine that the bock would be a great thing, as the gentleman puts sorao new and novel in. terpretations in the Scriptures. "Revelations" is his hobby, and a great deal of space is devoted to that book. CUB ms Htnmi tt'.utn FAiu. In two more weeks the lime j for the Fourth Ward 1' air Will be here, and the committee is laboring heroically to make it u snr-cess. Their labori should be vigorously encouraged by every j body. Tomorrow evening rt grand ball will bo held at IJoyuolda' ball to raise fundi to nsist in the matter. At ihu ball a Fair queen will be selected to preside ovei the festivities. Considering Consider-ing the number of charming, beautiful and q-ironly young ladies of which this city boasts, the bull and ils attendant election elec-tion contest will be one of great enjoyment and interest. l'eople who dance thouUl attend at-tend this ball and enjoy themselves them-selves in one of the be-it ball ifloms in the County; people who go for fun should be there, as there will be plenty of thai Lsame, and to spare; while people who ure not in ths habit of going go-ing to bulls should go' to see how it would seem, and by their presence assist in a worthy cause. A (WHAT MAX (10 SE. I Jy the death, Sunday, of Charles A. Dana, editor of the New York Sun, journalism looses its most noble exponent, and America one of her greatest men. I' or years he has been recognized as a leader, and it was he who did so much to niise journalism to tho dignity of a profession. Mr. Dana mi.de the Sun the greatest American newspaper of the age, and at his advanced age, 78, was still working steadily stead-ily on in the harnes?. Ho be gan his active life early, and after a variety of employments, entered newspaper work, for which he soon developed a remarkable re-markable genius He helped Horace Greely to make of the Tribune a power for the abolitionists aboli-tionists in the old slavery days before the war. After parting part-ing with Mr. Greeley he entered ihe service of the government, and did invaluable work for it in a semi-military capacity throughout the rebellion. After the war he returned to New York and became a controlling force on the Sun. He built that paper up rapidly, and with it amassed a fortune. Mr. Dana has been styled the Dean of American journalism, a title well deserved and honorably honor-ably maintained. He was, in spite of his years, a hard worker, and fuv members of his stall were more regularly or promptly in their places than Mr. Dana. l'eace be to his ashes. the couyrv faiu. The County Fair was n success, suc-cess, and has been a groat thing for the County. The Independent Indepen-dent suggests that it is now none too soon to begin to agitate where the next one shall be held. We would like to see it located at Springville, but real ize that cither tho north or south end of the Count should be favored next. It is of far more importance to k;ep the project alive and growing, than it is to waste time and strength in a discussion is to where it should be held. yoT Fl'N FOR THE JIA11Y. The bachelor editor of The Independent has often noticed the ecstatic delight which a great many people of all ages manifest at the bight of a bby and wondered won-dered greatly thereat. Such a lot of caressing they get from all hands ! Some seem to enjoy it, and some do not. but they get it just the same. All babies, barring a certain amount of variation in size, complexion, color of hair and eyes, look alike to us. We aio told, however, that no two are alike. We don't know, and what we don't know about babies would make a larger'book than a U. S. Census report. A writer in the Popular Science Monthly idso has that notion, and enlarges upon it as follows: 'According to the American fashion in most households, infanta in-fanta of a few months as well as children of maturer years are permitted to be in the presence of older members of the family much of tho time. Guests always al-ways expect to see the baby, to hold it, and to stimulate it in all sorts of ways to see how prettily and intelligently it reacts. This practice would not be so objec lionable if it were not that when the average adult has a little child in his arms he is always intense and restless in voice and action?. Tew people seem to appreciate how such treatment taxes the nervous strength of nn infant. But let an older person imagine what a strain it would be to have excited people about him constantly, tossing and patting him, and making all manner of facial and vocal demonstrations dem-onstrations for his entertainment. entertain-ment. How much more it must wear upon a child to whom these things are new and strange, all arousing the strongest emotions of fear, curiosity, or excitement, and thus draining the plastic, immature brain of its vitalities." We respectfully submit the foregoing for the consideration of people who regard and treat a baby as though it were an animated doll which we do not believe it is. Judging from what appears in the columns of our exchanges, the anti-saloon anti-saloon sentiment is growing all over the St'ite. In Lehi a Democratic convention passed a red hot nrohild-tion nrohild-tion resolution, offered by Mr. A. J. Evans, and Lehi is t he place where that 'infernal machine" a distillery is being erected. People may sow to the wind in erecting a distillery, but they will in time reap the whirlwind. whirl-wind. No greater curse could well come to Lehi than the establishment of a distillery. Mr. A. J. Evan did right in offering the resolution, and the Democratic convention did right in passing it. Ogden Commonwealth. People who promote and put in operation a prohibitory enactment en-actment should see to it that it has sufficient moral force and sentiment behind it to prevent it from becoming a farce. The mongrel style of prohibition had in so ninny cities does more to throw discredit on the movement move-ment than anything else. A few druggisis and others are made outlaws by those ordinances, but often no efforts are made to punish infractions of the law. That is where the fault lies, and not in the principle itselfTee that a prohibitory enactment is enforced, and it will do the rest. Tho city of Pay son now has her electric light plant in running run-ning order, water being the power pow-er used. Everyono in that progressive pro-gressive burg is tickled at the result of recent test9, as it is found that the city has power to spare. We are sorry to say that at present writing electric lights fiu Springvillo are largely a nrwer of the future. Just how remote that future is is only to be conjectured. Polities Hnd marketing the sugar bed crop now hold everyone's attention, and it seems too bad that a matter mat-ter of business and economy, like the electric light question, should he compelled to take a back seat pending a city election.
