She should fry to set n stiiinlanl for other Utah County cities to H" ly when their turns come for the County Fair. It is somewhat amusing to Bee the Enquirer and oilier papers giving the promotion of E. J. Yard lo the piOMl ion ul Chief Engineer of the li (i. V as a recent item of news, when The Independent is reliably in formed that it is ol the vintage of a yettr ago, at least. At the home of () II. Mowr, in Oakhmd, is a rosebush which lias hern planted two years only. It bloomed once this year, and is in bloom again, and will con. tinue in bloom until snow flits. The flowers are red in color and very nice. This rosebush seem? to be a decided novelty. Col. ?ut Donau, lalo of I lie Utnhniitn of Salt Lake, is now at Portland, Oregon, and isemploy-jng isemploy-jng lits pen in preparing Klondike Klon-dike matter. The Colonel can make the sluir readable, if anyone any-one can. Utah lost a great boomer when tho vigorous P. Donan pulled his freight. The County Fair movement is well u'nder way now, and every I lung goes to show that it will be a great event Manager Maescr is doing some gieat work, and will conduct it safely through ton finish. Catalogues and program are now out, and offer some great attractions. The selection of Miss Frona Burraston. of Goshen, as tho County Queen, last Thursday night, was a very fitting and appropriate ap-propriate one. Tho young lady is bemitiful and accomplished nnd will -queen, it royally over her subjects in every part of the county. Verily, Goshen is all right. Last week n con pit oflinemen were seen putting up telephone wires, and the import spread abroad that the Provo Power tiara people weie putting in electric elec-tric lights here. A number of moss-backs at once took alarm and fled to their aik, fearing to be caught by the flood-title of progress. Indications nt present all point to u verv successful and instructive County Fair. The various cities of the County are lending their aid, and no effort is being spared to ninke a good showing. There nre ninny op-poitunities op-poitunities for Springville to make special displays, and it should be attended to. The slaughter of the striking coal miners near llar.leton, Pa., n few days ago, has raised quite 11 storm of indignation, and there seems to be a greut deal of trouble ahead for the sheriff who ordered the firing. It was 11 very 'ill-advised act, at best, though it will no doubt aid the strugglmgUniners by creating a public sentiment in their favor. Sheriff Lewis, of Salt Lake County, still manages to make things uuplasant for tho man Monk. lie now refuses to let him see anyone but his (Monk's) attorneys. The sheriff further states that he ''is running that jail and no outsider is going to dictate, etc." It is difficult to conceive of that sort' of man who would care to associate himself him-self willingly with his sheriff-leti( sheriff-leti( Lewis, in this mailer. rjx v : rr:c wini it. 1 I Ml Ills J lllilltC Colli ill i.-sioil 1 1 :l V f - M Sill I- phis in tin 1 1 1'iisn ry, niter p.iv-injr p.iv-injr (lie ex ju-ii-fs of the li cc h In nt ion , nii'l sire sit u h?s lo know lonv lo ii.oe til ii. The various Gootl lloads or-gani.alions or-gani.alions in the East are keeping keep-ing up the agitation for belter country highways, and ih.i work is reaching a magnitude not dreamed of here in the West. Tho following article from Gold en Hours tellrt a lew of the things meant by "gootl roads": "It is impossible lo tell in a brief story the importance of good road to the country.
