To Youso Men in Love (3rd Article): Ar-ticle): Some day, when you have toiled for her awhile longer, and gather a reasonable amount of worldly world-ly goods for her protection and com fort, she will place her hand confidingly confi-dingly in yours in the presence of witnesses. With her 'i will!" she will forswear liberty. Her wistful eyes will lie raised in tender love to wards yours as she makes the greatest sacrifice of her life; for that is what it is. as vim will appreciate if you stop i irmiK. wnat wn lliose see in jou.- a noro. hne minks vou are one. if she is loving you for yourself alunc; and I am presuming she is. You are to her a knight, a cavalier, a hero bold: she glories in your strength or your kidness, or some quality that make8 her esteem you above all others. Though a hundred men pass before her in review, they are waved aside to their own disparagement, when she compares them with you. Just as ardently as you admire her does she admire you! But is sheonly dreaming of your heroism and goodness? good-ness? The dream is one so beautiful for you toconsider, that to awaken her to a different reality will be cruel pain, ir you are shrouding your real character and deceiving her as to your motives, try now to open your sou) wide to the qualities she loves. Lei them rush in until you are possessed pos-sessed by them, so that she ma v never have before her eyes the sorrow and distress of an illusion. Bj what she thinks youare; and while she will still remain the more powerful to mould and the greater in heart (how true!) she will nevertheless look up to you as though she were the lesser. What a sweet offering of incense to your proud and hapty spirit that will be! Deception as to goodness and nobility, nobil-ity, until both becomes habits of the soul, is worth the effort of carrying on, and when fully attained will make the life together a growth in the sweetest graces of humanity. MY KNIGHT. Why do I love him. my nohlo Knight? Is it because of his visage bright Or his stroii); right hand and his bounding health Or his costly garb and his worldly wealth? Is It because of his wooing sweet Or the gift that he flings at my favored feet? Is it because of the noble race, Whence he boasts his lineage, proud, to trace? Ah no! 'tis because, for the love of me He'has cheerfully donned his panoply: Stalwart and brave beyond compare,; But gentle and kind to his lady fair. Clad In an armorof truth Is he. With the stainless shield of purity, Aod a sword unsliei.thed to uphold the right. That's why I love him, my Knight, my - Knight: Ii You smile at the old fable about the greedy dog that dropped a bone in order to snatch at its reflection in the water below. Beware of similar foolishness! In the present state of your feeling you admire the beauty, the good sense, the modesty, the attractive ways of the woman of y3ur choice. You look up to her and she can raise you in all that is worthy. The progress of 1900 years is being enjoyed by you; the agesdunng which woman has grown, under the influence of a virgin's son, from a creature of utility to the Jew and a creature of pleasure to the Gentile, into a radiant help-meet that draws out of man more fully the divine possibilities of bis nature; these ages arc epitomized in your love. The gain to you from her devotion is, in a measure, like the gain of the world from her dear sex since the Christian Era. Just as we expect her influence to keep the world continuously progressing, so may your gain keep on growing as you come to a fuller knowledge of her. O, greedy one.' Is this not enough? You are a better man because she loves you before marriage. This is the substance sub-stance now In your possession. Will you forget it all and rush through the gates of love as though the Creator had from all time planned to form this particular woman for your particular par-ticular pleasure? If you do, the shadow alone will be yours. The substance of love Is her entire nature and its effects on you; the shadow is physical pleasure indulged in for your own sake. Here is the wrecking point of many a fair ship of marriage that has started joyously over the sea of life. The polar star of united helpfulness is forgotten in the presence pres-ence of passion's flickering light. The Joyousness comes to an end, the act of love now lowered to mere lDStlnct rounds out the full desire, increased indulgence calls for further indulgence, indul-gence, sense becomes the all-in-all, and then last and worst stage of all the heart goes wandering anywhere end' everywhere seeking physical pleasure, and it becomes almost a matter of indifference whether it be one woman or another that furnishes the pleasure. The horse, seeing the buggy, became frightened and ran away, colliding with Mrs. Hall's house and breaking the surrey to pieces. A porch post and some brick were knocked out of the wall. Mrs. Roylance's two little children were in the buggy, but by some lucky chance were not injured except for for some slight bruises. Mrs. Roy lances father was quite severely injured in trying to stop the run-away Prospectors' Map of Utah. An ludependeut Correspondent Describes Des-cribes Some of the Beauties of California. San Pedho, Cal., Aug. 24. Editor Independent: Thinking that the readers of The Independent might be interested in hearing something from this part of our beautiful land, I will endeavor to write of the couutry as I sec it dur mv tjrst visit to the coast at this point. A few days ago I took the train at San Bernardino feeling most uncomfortably uncom-fortably warm and looking forward with much pleasure to the wool breeze from the ocean. It was a very beautiful beau-tiful country through which we passed, first through mile after mile of orange, olive, fig and many other kinds of fruit trees, until one began to wonder where markets eould be found for such an abundance of fruit. Situated near one of these immense orchards is an old Spanish Mission church called the San Gabriel which is said to be more than 120 years old, and one can easily believe it, in looking look-ing at its strong, rugged walls, in some places completely covered by ivy and other vines. In one side there are a number of arches built into the wall and in each arch hangs a bell, some large and some small, which at some far distant day, have been a complete chime. This ancient looking structure has a peculiar pecul-iar interest for me and makes me think of the devout Catholics who have bowed the knee in worship on hearing the beautiful chime ring out over the tropical country from the brazen throats of those now rusted and unused bells. After leaving the orchards we came to the vine-yards and all one could see for miles was the grape-vine, loaded with luscious fruit, now ripining under un-der the summer sun. After leaving Los Angeles and continu'ug southward south-ward and a little westward for twen-ty-tlve miles, we arrived at our intended in-tended destination, the beautiful sea port town of San Pedro. Doubtless many wiii rememder that this town has recently gained much notority on account of being a candidate t r a deep sea harbor which the government govern-ment intends to build on the coast of Southern Californfa, at some point not yet decided upon, The residences of San Pedro are built upon a high bluff, over looking the beautiful,' blue waters of the calm Pac.flc. and I know of no lovelier or more peaceful scene than to sit on the veranda and look out over that broad, blue expanse ex-panse of water, dotted here and there with the white sail of some vessel moving silently along; or it may be some fisherman's boat, anchored, and floating idly to and fro awating the coming of the master who will come and cast his net and presently land upon the wharf diffrent kinds of fishes from the mighty deep. Far out from the shore can be faintly faint-ly seen a buoy which marks the spot where a treacherous reef of rocks rear their heads, and on this buoy an immense bell has been so placed that the motion of the waves causes it to ring constantly, to warn sailors of the danger of coming too near. At night when all is still, you can Hear this bell, whose doleful notes sound like the wailing cry of some lost soul, echoing across the moonlit waves. Over all this placid scene hovers the white winged seagull watching its chance to seize some unwary fish or some refuse thrown from the huge steamer that lies anchored in the bay. Yesterday I walked on the smooth, sandy beach and watchid the great waves, laden with shells and sea Weed, roll up with a loud roar and break into white foam when they reached the land, and it makes one think how small and insignificant man is when compared with this one of the many wonderful works of our Creator. The residences of the town are each one a perfect bower in itself, surround ed as they are with geraniums and fuchsias and many other kinds of flower sand vines. The weather is very cool and pleasant as there is usually a slight breeze from the ocean. I hop3 that this brief discription of one of the beautiful spots of this earth may interest my friends at home, and I remain your friend and well wisher, Clara Clyde, j R- A.DE A.L, President. B. L.
