School affairs this year received very little attention from the citizens of Springville, if the turnout at caucus and election is any criterion. About fifty citizens were present at the caucus Saturday night, and Oscar M. Mower was nominated for trustee for the term of three years by acclamation. acclama-tion. At the election held Monday afternoon he was elected by 41 out of 42 ballots cast, Jas. E. Hall receiving the odd ticket. At the citizen's meeting at 10 o'clock Monday, to hear the trustee's report, six citizens were present. Business Men Here Slow in Contributing Contribut-ing to Jubilee Funds. Springville's cash contributions to the Jubilee funds are likely to be very light, as the business men are not very enthusiastic in regard to it. vVm. M. Iloytance, of ' the Jubilee county committee, states that contributions con-tributions are coming in very slow, only two having been yet received. The following letters are self-explanatory: W. M. Mr. Colburn is gathering material for a book which he expects to publish at Paris. The Utah Pioneer Jubilee has been his objective point for the last few months, and he will reach Salt Lake on the 15th. The trip across the desert, though tedious, Mr. Colburn tather enjoyed. He walked all the way, as indeed he has from New York. Eleven pair of shoes have outlived their usefulness on this journey. A scrap book which he has with him contains a collection of autographs, business cards, ads, etc., collected between here and Grand Junction. A number of Springville people added their John Henrys to the collection. TEACHER AM) TRUSTEE. I8 g Absolutely Pure (Vlehraled for its jircal leavening strength and licalt lif illness. County Superintendent D. 11. Chris-censen Chris-censen is in receipt of a coiunnmiea-tion coiunnmiea-tion from Dr. John It. Park, State Superintendent Su-perintendent of Public Instruction, in answer to the question, ' Is there any provision of the school law or of the State Constitution that would pro hibit a school Trustee from acting as a teacher?'' In other words, can a citizen citi-zen act in the dual capacity of teacher and trustee in the same district? Dr. Park expresses the opinion that neither the school law or even the constitution expresses such inhibition inhi-bition as is referred to, but ii. the absence ab-sence of any specillc law on the subject sub-ject there is an inconsistency in the proposition from the fact that the functions of the two ofliees are not compatible with each other: the duties du-ties of teacher are largely dependent on that of trustee, and this dependence is to a very great extent pecuniary in its character. ''The opinion of thisoflice therefore is that a citizen cannot act in the dual capacity of teacher and trustee in the same district.-' The effect of this opinion will probably prob-ably be the resignation of several trustees in the county. Springville Society Was Introduced to a New Function, Tuesday Evening. One of the newest of the many swell ways of entertaining is the Bicycle Tea. To Mrs. E. J. Yard belongs be-longs the honor of introducing it to the society circle of Springville, which she did very nicely last Tuesday evening. The event included a twelve-mile spin to Spanish Fork and return, the organization of a bicycle club, and a nice luncheon. The guests, numbering number-ing about, twenty, assembled at Mi's. Yard's residence at about 7:;iO and then set out for the, spin to Spanish Fork. A heavy wind storm came up just as the party entered that town and kept up fur a time during their return. The spin was made without incident until Hobble Creek bridge was reached in this city, where Miss Helen Deal collided with a young man, Chas. Daley, who wheeled suddenly sud-denly into the street. Mr. Daley's wheel was wrecked, but neither party was hurt. After an elaborate and dainty luncheon a bicycle club was organiz "d with otlicers as follows: President L. D. Deal. 1st Vice-President Mark Cook. 2nd Vice-President Miss Blanche Cook. Secretary Miss Julia Alleman. Treasurer Mrs. E. J. Yard. A committee was appointed to draft a constitution and by-laws to report at the next regular meeting, to be held Tuesday evening. THE FRITT CROP. Aetage Yield Lighter Rut Whole Production Greater Than Last Year. Snringville's fruit crop this year is a great deal larger than that of last year, due principally to the increased acreage, as the average yield is lighter. The quality is of the very best. Strawberries were a good crop, and a nice crop of raspberries has just been harvested. Cherries were vtry" good and currants excellent, 4 From present indications, apples will be a short crop in this locality. Trees which bore heavily last year are nearly or entirely barren this season. The peach crop bids fair to be excellent. Plums will be light. Grapes are looking well. Fruit shipments from this city have been heavy this year, and had the usual heavy crops of ail kinds been harvested the increased acreage would have made this a gala year for Springville Spring-ville fruit growers.
