"innova-tion." Again, to make a change of that kind in the middle of the year would be disastrous to the management manage-ment of the system, and o far from correcting the existing evil of tardiness, tardi-ness, it would make it, worse. If the change bad been effected at the beginning of th year, there could be no possible objection from aoy point of view, and doubtless some benefit wovld be derived from it; but under existing conditions, I think it would be extremely inadvisable, T. On Tuesday 125 operatives in the Provo woolen mills walked out as a result of a failure on the part of the board of directors to grant a request made by them, The operatives, it seems, have been receiving one-fourth cash, the remainder being store trade and the product of the mills. They requested that they in future be paid two-thirds of their w-iges in cash. . The request was refused by the board of directors, and its decision communicated to the employes by Reed Smoot, who said the corporation would pay one-third cash hereafter. The operatives then agreed to meet thedircctors half way, and said they would take one-half cash. Uikid this proposition being refused they walked out. On Wednesday morning the hands held another meeting and reconsidered reconsid-ered the motion which had previously p evailcd to stop work, and further debated the question. Director Tanuer was present and was invited to, speak. He presented to the employe- figures showing the wages paid dur.ipg the past four years to he $194,243.42, and the dividends $20,3!8.!W. The dividends, amounting to about 10 per cent, of the capital invested, in-vested, had all been paid in cloth. . Superintendent Smoot said the board could not do better than pay one-third cash, as he had previously slated. He invited a committee into the counting room and let them inspect in-spect the contracts and letters from eastern customers. On some of the orders it was proven the mills do not make a cent. He promised to intercede inter-cede with the board for cash enough to pay taxes in the fall. After further debate the employes decided not to return to work. As there are some 400 families more eir less affected by the strike, it is to be sincerely regretted, to say the least, and we hope an amicable settlement settle-ment may soon be reached. The sympathy sym-pathy of the business men of Provo seems to be with the strikers, ami some eiffer pecuniary aid, one merchant mer-chant alone offering 100, it is said, if they hold out. Bishop Abiel Leonard, president of the hospital, rapped for order, and spoke a welcome to all on behalf of the board of truaieis. "This," he said, "is the twenty-fifth anniversary of the founding of St. Mark's, as it was in April of 1872 when the old adobe building on Fifth East and Third South was rirstoceupied." The bishop proceeded with a short sketch of the hospital's history, and referred feelingly to those wlio had done so much for the institution and had passed away. He referred to Dr. Hamilton, the founder, and said that it was difficult to do justice to the doctor's memory. The bishop referred re-ferred in an eulogistic manner to others who had been instrumental in making the hospital what it is today. He strongly emphasized his remarks in regard to the gratuitous work of the staff and nurses. Other speakers were Dr. Hascom, Major Wilkes, Dr. Iliff, Dr. Hawkes, and Dean Halsey. There were many persons present from out of town, and the business and frofessional men of Salt Lake were present in numbers. The present eifilcers of the hospital are: Rt. Itev.
