The concert which was to hare been given next Wednesday has been in-detinately in-detinately postponed. Beck, the Provo jeweler has some elegant souvelrs that are just the proper thing for the holidays. Thtv are sure to please you and your sweetheart atTupper & Stanson. Miss Julia Allenaan in the role of Lucy Davis, the soldiers wife ought to be a drawing card on Sat. Jan. 2nd. The latest designs In novelty goods at prices that can't be beat. Tupper & Stanson. Such goods and such prices were never beat anywhere. Elegant line of jewelry for Christmas presents at Tupper & Stanson. Miss Pearl Packard who was injured a few weeks ago, by stumbling and strained her knee quite severely, is now independent of crutches, doctors, etc. and ready for another go. That twelve carloads of gravel at the Union Pacific switch has been whirlled ofT to some other more favored, but surely not more needed, locality than near their track and the intervening road. Licenses to wed have been issued to Chauncey Whiting, aged 26, and Ida M. Pack, aged 25, both of Springville; says the Enquirer. The Independent takes pleasure in offering congratu lations on the impending event. For Christmas cheer in the way of Wines and Liquors of any kind, give Robt Kirkwood of Provo a call. He has charge of the Pioneer Liquor Co. and deals in the best goods, and at prices that surprise you. Irvine and Sons had areal live Santa Clause in their window last week. He was certainly a drawing card for the juvenile department of Provos popu lation. H. T. Reynolds & Co. have just re ceived a large consignment of candies nuts, and holiday groeeries their stock having been entirely sold out. They sell choice candies from 10c a pound and up. Garret Friel is practicing the blood-drawing blood-drawing 6troke with the cat o' nine tails on a cedar post. He promises to draw blood from the delicate shoulders should-ers of Archie Grahame in the third act of the "Martyr of the Lasli" on Jan. 2nd. Have your old -sewing machines cleaned, readjusted and repaired by the oldest expert in Utah. Holla T. Marshall is again on deck with a full supply of material for all kinds of sewing machines and clocks. A pos tal card will reach him, when he will visit anv house in Snringville on hort notice. All woik guaranteed. The Independent understands that Mr. Aldrach, of Clear Lake, Millard Co. who Is prom inently Identified with irrigation nterests in Utah, is working for the appointment of Surveyor General. Mr. Aldrach is a staunch Republican and a McKinley man at that and it would seem is carte blanche in this respect, and aside from his political proclivities he is entitled to favorable consideration as a recognition of his services in the reclamation of Utah lands. Mr. W. O. Curtis a prominent farmer far-mer of Independence, Iowa is visiting Mr. Levi Curtis of this city, who is hi cousin. While in Utah Mr. Curtis will visit some other relations in var inns rarts of the State. Mr. Curtis bus not met his relati ins for 40 years who were chl'dren together, On Sat. Jan. 2nd the Silver Hand with the assistance of Archie Grahame N. T. Matsor., Miss Julia Alleman and others will produce a bloodcurdling military drama entitled "A Master to the Lash" with Mr Grahame In the leading role and Mr. Matson as the villian. The play realistically depicts the horrors of army life as it used to he in old Entland. The scene where the martyr is flogged with a ca o nine-tails In the presence of his wife is especially thrilling, and all melo drama and friends of the bilver band should attend. The Schubert Symphony Club, ren dered its entire musical program to a crowded house last Friday ulght. and all who were in attendance declarh it to be the finest vocal and instrumen tal musical treat to which Springville has ever has ever had the good fortune for-tune to listen, each and every member, mem-ber, an artist in their respective lines. It was well worth the price of admis- sion to here the child artist, master of the violin, to say nothing of the artls tic talent displayed by the balance of the club. Their success Is well deserved des-erved and by the sentiments of the people, Springville will always be a most ardent admirer and financial encouragement of this most excelllent company, the Schubert Symphony Club. The W. U. T. U. i.f Spanish Fork leld their eighth annual medal contest con-test last Friday evening, resulting in Miss Grace Brimhall carrying off the houors by the rendition of a piece entitled, en-titled, "The Multitude of Littles." There were four other contestants, all of whom did excellent oratorical work. The judges were Mrs. E. E. Shepherd of Salt Lake and Messrs. J. A. Reese and T. O. Creer of Spanish Fork. Much credit is due Mrs. Lee, the president, presi-dent, for her indefatigable labors. Mr. Geo. Robertson who was so hurredly whisked off to Panguitch about a month ago, on a rather tough charge of adultry has returned home with flying colors, having proved his entire innocence and materially assisted assis-ted in locating the guilty parties. It was a clear ease of blackmail just to cover up a family disgrace of even more helnlousness than the alleged charge would have been. The friends of George were profuse in their faith of his innocence and are consequently very pleased at his vindication. The Independent congratulates George on his ability to clear himself of any implication in the matter. uThe Provo Enquirer speaks of Judge Henderson as '-our candidate." The question is, who is meant by "our?" It can't very well be speaking for the church, for it is not yet the official church organ, thongh apparently appar-ently striving hard for that eminence: it can't mean to speaK for tne Democratic Demo-cratic party, for it is by no means a Democratic organ; it certainly isn't speaking for the Republicans, for they have no candidate, and their choice wouldn't be worth anything in this fight; thus by the process of elimination, there remain but two factious for which the Enquirer could be supposed to speak, viz., the McKinley Republicans and the gold- bug Democrats. If this is the candidacy can-didacy which the Enquirer indorses n behalf of Judge Henderson, that gentleman will ilou'.aiess sniver on seeing such indorsement. Tribune. The Johnson & Houtx Dramatic Co., which is now soliciting public favors nSan Pete county, left Springville last week and opened in Fairview to a spleudid two-nights business. Mr. Aaron Johnson is an old time star in this circuit. Mr. Win. Houtz is a character actor of sterling merit. His Denver Dan" in "Jack O' Diamonds" is acknowledged to be without a peer on tne facinc uoast. miss reari Ethicr needs no eulogies from us, her reputation is secure. Mr. Joseph Whitehead has proven himself an amateur heavy actor and only needs a season on the road to smooth down the rough places. Of the other members mem-bers The Independent can only say, they are deserving of success and decidedly extend the compliments of the season to the company and hopes that the box office receipts during their tour will more than dissipate the tfloom raised by the election of McKinley, and that the Fairview returns re-turns will be a criterion of their profits in other towns. HE VTA NTS 'KJ1 QUIET. "1'ollycarp'' Thinks Presiding Officers Miould show the same Heipect Tkat They Expect. Deaii Mr. Editor : 1 a.ldress you this communication on a -ubiect which 1 tninic is or con siderable importance i. e., the pernicious perni-cious habit some of our officers in the various church organisations of Springville have of talking or else m:i!;inir business!?) to talk about oftcrn imes during the entire session of i meeting. Isn't it inconsistent for oflkersto expect members of an or gun', ition to feelorshow any respect, when those Dlaced over them so far forget themselves as to be seen lean ing ovor each other, creating a regular bu.z paying no attention whatever to the one who is speaking or render ing an exercise? Those occupying the emulative positions of presiding officers might well attend to the business busi-ness department of their session be fore the meeting begins. Don't they know they are playing the roles of hosts? They have iuvited those present as their guests. It is certainly in bad taste for them to spend all or any part of the session in whispering. Of course there may be cases that require this ridiculous pro cedure, but generally it Is in extremely bad taste. What private business have you to discuss when the members are assem bled ? Isn't it considered poor taste, or decidedly a breach of etlquet, to see a host and hostess whispering to each other ? If so, we may so con sider it on the part of officers (who are hosts pro tem.) at our publ ic meetings, They have no more right to Invite us out to see them chatter, whisper, and ! otherwise show their bad breeding, than has a private citizen In fact, not as much. And, besides, the bad example set the younger people is of great moment. J I have seen repeated instances where presiding officers have spent the entire time occupied by the choir, discussing some matter of business, J Instead of rjtyinf such attentlsn to that portion of the services which in some localities is considered very important. im-portant. Can they expect others to respect either the choir or its leader when they show so little? I have many times seen whispering indulged in (luring sermons and during dur-ing the prayer, and sometimes even while the sacrament is being pronounced. pro-nounced. It is little woncler that our meetings fail to have that sacred halo and quiet restfulness that .hould prevail. pre-vail. Now, Mr. Editor, is this matter not about as 1 have attempted toshow ? Many people unacquainted with the geography geog-raphy of the West Imagine that because "Chicago, Milwaukee St. Paul" are names uit-d in the corporaee title of the railway owning the Short Line between Chicago and Omaha, thev must go via the cities of Milwaukee Mil-waukee and St. Paul to reach their destination destina-tion if it be Chicago or east thereof. This Is a mistaken Idea' On a map the line running run-ning directly cast and west would look like this: Oui ah a Ch lcago. There is nothing more simple than that, ano it is lesvnlian M0 miles between Omaha and Chicago.
