If anyone supposes the Grand Valley fruit of Colorado is so fine lie is riht, !ut Springville ran got hut country one better in quality, at least, if not in size, and then not he under the necessity necess-ity of sending to Moah, III ah, or California for the extra choice. If our farmers and fruit raisers were to pay one-half the attention atten-tion to their home interests in (his regard that farmers and fruit raisers do in Colorado, Springville would heeomn famous fam-ous as indeed it is now ! We have thousands of acres of undeveloped unde-veloped land, and thousands of bushels of fruit, small and large, that could be doubled in quantity and quality, if our owners would only realize their glorious possibilities possi-bilities and the excellent reputation reputa-tion of Spring-ville at Colorado points. Wherever you go you find Springville "known by the fruits that she bears." This is particularly noticeable among railroad people, but fruit users generally throughout the State of Colorado are very enthusiastic in praise of our fruit prod tie Is. Great credit is duo Win. M. Royianre for establishing this fact, but. he is handicapped bv the negligence of many of our fruit raisers who evadeJh? spraying spray-ing law, permit the crops to suffer suf-fer from drouth, failure to carefully care-fully trim, lack of care in cultivation, culti-vation, inattention to tho soil, and n desire to grow crops of all kinds (including weeds) in the orchard, and last but not least, lack of care and attention after the fruit is grown, in packing ready for shipment. Grand Junction is justly proud of her Peach day, but Springville could be more, than proud of her Fruit day, Beet day or any kind of agricultural day, if anything !.ke the effort were made that is pride of Grand Junction, or the care and attention bestowed on our crops that is given by our neighbors of Grand Valley and wherever any conditions for fruit and agriculture are louml in Colorado. Col-orado. We would that every owner of i n fruit ranch, orchard, farm or garden could take a trip through Coloradoand see for himself the glorious possibilities of our fair city for greatness in this respect, if all would unite in getting not only the best that can bo had, but by intensive methods of culture cul-ture get all our prolific soil is capable cap-able of producing, even as they do in sugar beet culture. Then Springville could be the most independent in-dependent and prosperous of cities in the State, as it is at present, pres-ent, but in so marked a degree that our hearts would swell with pride when saying "I am from Springville,:' , Let us join in looking after this as well as our other multitudinous multi-tudinous resources. Get 4lie best and maintain it in vvjwever wp ti n tift w k . o-w te-rfT i i n p ro v jug our already good reputation for fruit nnd agricultural fa-cilities. fa-cilities. . For n person to say silver is not fiat money shows lamentable ignorance of the term. The government has ! the option of pay ing il.- h"io!.-, I . , . ii-.: emplnvees .in I ellirr uiiiigin ions in coin, either go'd or silver, hut if paid in t-iher it, is only fiat nionev. Moreover, the holding of m!vci dollars is really not as siift-us curn iK-y. insomuch as a record of every certificate or treasury note is kept by the Treasury cfliciaN, and if the ow ner should know the number and issue of his paper and is subjected sub-jected to any loss by fire or otherwise other-wise he can g t a duplicate, but if his .silver dollars aie destroyed or even inched down he loses nearly fifty per cent, w it limit ro-coui ro-coui se to the gnvcrnim nl as; no such record is kept of the si!v r coin i n circu la1 ion. Peterson, Springville, Utah. Ciliiens to President. This week Mr. S. S. Jones sent to Win. J. F.ryan a beautiful gavel, artistically artis-tically finished in Utah silver and gold, 16 to 1. A silver band encircles each end of the boxwood head of the gavel, and in the center of the head, between the silver bands, is a gold star. On the tipper band the following follow-ing words arc engraved, "To Win. J. liryan. Pres. Trans-Mississippi Congress." Con-gress." Oa the star are the tlgures "lCiKI", and on the lower band the words "Gold and Silver Compliment of S. S. Jones and C. S. Loose." The history of the gavel is, briefly: At the Trans-Mississippi Congress, held in Omaha in December, ls'j,', as will be remembered, Mr. Hiyan was elected president. Messrs. Jones and Loose o tiered to have the gavel Mr. Bryan used appropriately finished in such a manner as to make It emblematic, emblem-atic, of the great financial reform advocated ad-vocated by Mr. Bryan. The offer w as gladly accepted, and in addition to the above decorations a handle made from Utah mahogany has been substituted sub-stituted for the original, which was of Inferior wood, making the present gavel almost entirely a Utah product. At the time Messrs. Jones and Loose made the offer of embellishing the gavel they had no idea that the little mallet would bis presented to the future fu-ture president of tha United States, but this seems to be a rase of deserved good fortune all around. Many an amateur blacksmith, and, indeed, tiot a few professionals, are unable to temper steel properly especially espec-ially for such Implements as mill picks and rock-drills. To do this is easy enough provided one knows how. The most important point is not to overheat. "If cast steel is made white hot. it is spoiled; yet if a person takes a chisel, mill-pick or other pointed t m! lobe repaired, the smith pushes it into the tire. The point is white-hot. They will now push it in and out or the Are a few times, and at last bring it out red-hot and work it. Of course, it is already spoiled, and no mat ter how low it is tempered, it is next to useless. Take one to the smith, and see that he puts the body of the tool In the fire, leaving the two thin ends uncovered till the middle Is red-hot. As soon as I he middle is red-hot, pull back, and let the thin end Just get a dull-red heat. It must now be hammered edgeways firs', and flatways last of all. It is best to hammer it on th- 1 it pat of the anvil, an-vil, as drawing : on the edge of the at.'..' a'1 hough a irivat deal quicker, mikes it short o! the grain and always al-ways cause-, the tool to break in the thinnest place. Serve the other ends the same, only repeat as soon as it loses its dull-red color. The lighter light-er the blows in working steel the tougher it is. The point should be quiet as thin as a fitter's chipping chisel, only a little longer; then it will not require doing up so often. When the ends are drawn out t lie middle w ill have lost its red heat. The ends can now be filul a little. Now to temper them. Heat them in the flames of the lire, usiiiggreat care. When a very dull red heat, cool in ruin water with the chill taken off, about three quorters of an inch from the end, and let down to a blue; if it should bo too brittle, a little lower. Servo the other end the same. Cool all over. Gi ind the edge rather blunt, and for the first few blows hit as light as possible.
