In the first week of September there will he issued from The Independent Inde-pendent oltice the initial number of tin; new series of The Utah Imius-Uiuiist. Imius-Uiuiist. The new publication will be a four-column quarto, will appear semi-monthly and will he published under the management of I). 1'. Felt. "VVra. F. Gibson will have charge of the editorial work. Mr. (iibson has been associated with The Independent Independ-ent for over a year past, and has demonstrated dem-onstrated his ability as a writer on subjects pertinent to the proposed publication in such a way that we feel confident that The Industrialist will find a place in the front links of Utah jounatlsin. 'f he Industrialist will aim to report re-port to the outside world the movements move-ments and progress of the varied and extensive industries of our vigorous new St He, as well as place thed ITer-cnt ITer-cnt sections of the State more in touch with one 'another in so far as it is possiMe to do so by the spread of the industrial news of each. The agricultural agri-cultural industry in all its branches will be given special attention. Mining Min-ing and manufacturing will alo In-given In-given the time and attention their importance demand. An effort will be made to glean from practical men in everv section of the State, their views and experiences, exper-iences, reports of the results of their labors, and, in fact, such iufonuation an may be of value to men and women in every walk of life in their endeavor to build up the new commonwealth. With this end in view, contributions arc solicited from men and women whose success in life has made their counsel useful and valuable. Political Politi-cal questions and the news of the day, except in so far as they may touch upon the immediate social and industrial life of the people, will not be discussed. Such of the labors and experience of the industrial world outside the io-tcr-mountain region as may sugget-t themselves as being helpful to the people of this State will be given in detail, and all new discoveries in science, art and mechanics will be reported as fully as their Importance and probable practical value will warrant. The publ'shers Invite the thoughtful thought-ful and careful consideration of the people of this and surrounding States to The Industrialist and its field of labor, and promise them in it a journal jour-nal worthy of their perusal and support. WHY DON'T YOU BE HONEST? If a patron desires to discontinue his paper no one will question his right to do so, but the bonds of friendship, it seems to us, would indicate indi-cate that we have a right to know why they wish to discontinue. The Independent is placed on the market at terms which can distress inj one. Our representatives always try to impress upon the people's minds that they may pay in what they have as a surplus; that we are here to live and whatever is raised or manufactured, manu-factured, or Is available in labor has been and is being accepted as pay. In view of this lenient and reciprocative system it is little wonder that so few have stopped their papers in fact, we have easily made a record of ten starts to one stop. Rut in some cases the one stop has been from people who pretend the greatest friendship for the editor ami his corps ot assistants, assist-ants, or men whose gardens, farms or ranches, and even coffers, are overflowing over-flowing with wealth who, if the paper guitcd them, would have it If it cost them four times the amount asked. The object of this scold is not to coerce them, not to attempt an abridgment of their rights, or not to criticise them, but Just to rem I ml them that a newspaper man is ouly human. He cannot please all any more than can any private individual and that he Is ever striving for the advancement of all, with local Interests Inter-ests la preference; that he is always ready and anxious to receive advice on questions of public Import; that he Is only furnishing a vehicle for public opinion, and if it is not furnished fur-nished him he must of a necessity be frail to whatever extent this Is de- Died him. He at least looks to his avowed friends for evidences of dis approval of certain courses taken by Other tbati "fc-top my rar"! Wots. It is useless for the average man to till the editor he "can't afford to take the local paper". Such excuses are strong evidences of hypocrisy. Any reasonable, editor will hail with gladness good honest criticism, lie gets plenty of (lattery from his sucker friends, (Juod, wholesome advice, criticism, or een faultfinding, Is I lie best road to success for the local parcr, is the best means of getting on the good side of the newspaper, and is productive of much more reciprocal feelings of good in the community at large, as well as in the lit t le coterie who are immediately associated in the paper business and their really desirable patrons. Joel Shomaker, formerly of Ueiiubliean, will slump Illinol Hie i for McKinley and llobart. Joel believes in protection but. never did in the free coinage of Silver. -r Logan Republican. Repub-lican. Yk mills! what a change! Everyone Every-one who knows "Hon." Joel Shomaker Sho-maker also knows that be lias always been a Silver man. Look at hi.- work on the Manti Messenger; look at his record on the Republican during his alleged editorial management: look at any ' of his conceited utterances, eitlieron the curbstone or In print, till llanna's Indian consulship bee commenced buzzing around his ctiaiu-oleon ctiaiu-oleon head. Til k business men and citizens of Springville rallied up to (he choir's aid in creating a fund to give the members an outing in splendid shape. A fund of over l was raised in two hours, making a total of about 2", thus enabling the members who went togeta rate of 7.m', or one-half the rate. All enjoyed themsehes immensely, im-mensely, and feel extremely grateful for the aid and appreciation shown them by the public. A stoky is told by a grandfather that on an occasion one of the little children asked for a "piece", (irandpa, to help the little fellow's mother, proceeded to prepare the morsel, and after going to infinitely more trouble to make the piece extra nice, was reward d by the following remark from the joungster: "No, I want ma to give it tome." Wonder if any of our Silver McKinley friends are'n'l playing this role? Tiik Springville City Council meetings meet-ings of late have been tame affairs. At the last meeting Mrs. Hannah Rochnichzer's irrigation trouble was almost the only thing to break the monotony of the. opening, bill-allowing and closing ceremonies. This quietude will be broken as soon as the close of the harvest season gives the citizens time to think of their municipal t roubles. Nkpiii, Manti, Mt. Uleasant, I'rovo andjolher towns am bidding for the Republican State convention. With that new and commodious Opera house which our citizens so often dream of, Springville could give them points on attractiveness as a place for conventions. Hut we liavn't the Opera house, or any hall large enough. With the addition of a few hot nights the weather of the last week would pass very well as that of a more tropical climate. Mr. Staples offers to send a sample package of seed to any who desire it, If they will scud a couple of stamps for postage: "The value of crimson clover as a fertilizer crop Is the chief subject of thought by farmers In many states at tins time.
