AB60WTEI.Y PURE Silver Eohoea From Waghington. The administration has spoken. It will not support Rrynn and Sewall. Wh(i or what il will support is still a problem to be solved. President Cleveland and several members of his Cabinet arc strongly in favor of putting put-ting up a gold democratic ticket.and, for once, the silver democrats arc all wishing that Mr. Cleveland may have liis way. They believe that a gold democratic ticket would add largely to their chance of winning in several close states, because it would be supported sup-ported by gold democrats who would otherwise vote for McKinley and IIo-bart. IIo-bart. Republicans say they are indifferent in-different as to what the gold democrats demo-crats may do, but it is an open secret that they are pulling every available wire to prevent the putting up of another an-other gold ticket. The two convention which will meet at St. Louis next week are attracting at-tracting a great deal of attention in Washiug'.on. It is virtually settled that the silver convention will endorse en-dorse the Chicago platform and ticket, as It is called for the purpose of taking independent action only incase neither nei-ther of the old parties adopted a silver platform, -When the demscratic convention con-vention adopted a silver platform and nominated a silver ticket it left little for the silver convention to do but to endorse that ticket aud platform. plat-form. While it is reasonably certain thai the populist convention will either endorse Bryan and Sewall and the Chicago platform or nominate the same men on another platform, there is lust enough doubt about it to add interet to the contention and to -attract some of the shrewdest politicians poli-ticians in the country to St. Louis, for the purpose of trying to influence influ-ence the action of the convention. The silver democrats will be there to urge the desirability of unit ing all whd favor the free coinage of silver in the support of one ticket, and the gold men, both republicans and democrats, will be there to persuade per-suade the populists that the only way they can keep up there party organization is to nominate a ticket of their own. Of course both of these arguments are ba?ed upon the self interests in-terests of those who make them, but then politics, like most of the games in which mankind engaged, is chuck full of selfishness. This is likely to be a queer campaign in more way than one. According to (Senator Faulkner, chairman of the democratic Congressional Campaign committee, the work of that committee commit-tee is to ba both for silver and gold, just at the democratic candidates for Congress may desire it to he. Speaking Speak-ing on the subject Senator Faulkner said: "We. will take it for granted that the democrats of each district know what they are about, and' we will not question their selection. It will make no difference to us what the platform may be upon which the candidates are selected." In order that there might be no misunderstand-ingof misunderstand-ingof his meaning Seuator Faulkner was asked if the comtnitte would furnish fur-nish gold standard literature, If it was asked for by a democratic candidates candi-dates for Congress, He replied: "If he asks for such literature, aud we have it, he will get it." There is always fun to be extracted out of a political campaign bv those who know how to get at it. The knowing ones are now laughiug quietly at the announcement that Postmaster General Wilson's sound money views make it impossible for him to accept a nomination to Congress Con-gress from bis old district. That is one way of putting it, but, according to West Virginia democrats, it wasn't thesouud money view of Mr. Wilson which made bis nomination to Congress Con-gress Impossible, but the very pronounced pro-nounced silver views of a majority of the democrats iu bis old district. The populists generally regard the. platform adopted by the democratic convention atad the nomination of Bryan as a great triumph for their principles, and 1n order to impress tbftt idea upon members of his party Secretary Turner, of the ropulist "ational committee, has Latest U. S. Gov't Report 1W issued a signed statement, urging the populists to unite in supporting the platform, which he says is to all in-teutsand in-teutsand purposes a populist platform. He also says I hat M.r. I'.ryan is a populist, pop-ulist, and calls attention to his having hav-ing acted with the Nebraska populists popu-lists for the last two years. After noting that populist principles have captured the democratic party, he adds: "All populists in United States should rejoice that their principles have taken such a hold upon the American people that one of the great political parties of the nation has bueu compelled to adopt those principles and nominate a ticket pledged to carry them into execution." Think of a newspaper which pretends t be a moulder of opini ms, a leader of . thought, ai independent, outspoken out-spoken organ, laboring in the intcres't of the people, the community, the State refusing to express an opinion until a crowd of politicians get together to-gether and tell it what to do! Think of it! What kind of a press is it that refuses to choose between free coinage and demonetization, between prosperity pros-perity and ruin, between hope and despair, until some one tells 't which side to take? And yet we have several men right here in Utih who would defend the gold standard of McKinley if they were told by their political file leader to do so. So wonder the country is in a bad way, and the people poor. Logan Journal.
