The place to fljjht important measures meas-ures is within tbe party line.; by the desertion of the Silver wing of the Republicans the party was left without with-out legitimate representation for Silver. If the Democrats build a jlatform with Silver as the base the fight will then bo a question of right and might. We hope the people will observe the unity of "might" (the Gold wing) and "right"' will come In for a grand union. Silver ia the only Issue of importance all other planks w ill tie swallowed up in the solution of this great tinan-rial tinan-rial question. If Silvof wins at Chicago and is hubsequentl.v ratified by the people, It will necessitate the entire session of their Incumbency to re-adjust finances to the basis of 1873 and prior thereto; hence all talk of tariff revision or other measures will of a necessity be lost sight of. If the Gold party wins it will have no time to change any tariff law. Its entire lime will be occupied lo rebuilding re-building the fences which will have been so terribly shatten-d by its mistaken mis-taken views of the financial system. It will have seen its mistakes and will fall over Itself in frantic efforts to revive public trust, patch up finances fin-ances by fake meiusures such as the "Sherman law," the "Bland law," the "Currency hill," etc Even if a Silver House and Senate are elected, McKln-ley McKln-ley will never dare oppose the measure, meas-ure, even If he were as hostile to Silver as Cleveland Is, which we do not believe. McKinley will find plenty of reasons why we ought to have Silver, as he did in 1892 when he as chairman of the committee o Resolutions Reso-lutions recommended We, the Republican party, believe in the use of Gold and Silver as money, and we denounce the present democratic administration for its hostility to Silver. the country will be up for discussion is ridiculous, and any one who thinks aught but finances will be up for discussion dis-cussion is away off. The following from the Florida Tl-nes-Unlon is pertinent, and lilts the nail on the head: "The delegates to the Democratic 'convention are elected as Democrats. Senator Teller is not, and never has becu. The delegates to the Chicago convention would have no right to even consider him. Senator Teller is an advovate of a protective tariff. Some of the State delegations will be Instructed for gold, and ot hers for Silver, but all will be chosen by state that adopt platforms favoring a tariff, tar-iff, for revenue only. So far as we know there has been no exception to this rule, and there Is no probability that there will be. U -icier the circumstances circum-stances the convention could not nominate nom-inate Senator Teller unless the delegates dele-gates betrayed their constituents." Tub area covered, or essayed to be covered, by the sprinkler Is entirely t great for the limited facilities given for refilling tbe tank. Artesian wells are all right for somo conditions but where the dribble is so small that the road within 200 feet of the water supply dry before the tank Is refilled is little wonder that a bungling Job Is done. If we had a system of water works this could be remedied; flooded sidewalks and roads could then be dispensed with, and safety from tire, would in a measure be assured aud fire insurance rates would he reduced. Maj. Mckinley has been told that he was nominated at St. Louis for President of the United States by the Republican party. Reports of the announcement fall to say to what extent the Information affected him, but It seemed to cause him to emit a volley of orthodox Republicanism and promises of better times financially, which we are sure will never be redeemed re-deemed while standing on the platform plat-form built for him by his ghoul(d)lsh compatriots. The Independent Inde-pendent is happy to greet CoL Donan We hope Mir selectmen or the committee com-mittee who have the Lake Shore road under consideration are not allowing it to be pigeon holed. Nearly a year has gone by since the matter was first agitaied and we understand it was passed upon favorably and that a committee had been appointed to arrange for it. Here the matter seems to have stopped. Sphinovillk is the great radial centre for the fi uit-producing region and this year proves to be the safest, point, for, as a matter of fact, our canyon breezes have again shown us th it Jack Frost is even kept out. -- A Household Treasure. Hints of a possible big political scandal in the near future have been dropped this week by leading silver men. No names arc used and few particulars are iriven, but it is whis-cred whis-cred around Washington that some of those who are shouting the 'oudest for silver In public are plotting in private to prevent the nominal Ion by the Chicago convention of a ticket upon up-on which all of the silver voters would be willing to unite' and it is further whispered that some sensational denouncements may follow the Chicago convention, if these plotters succeed in getting a ticket put up that the populists and silver republicans republi-cans will reTuse to suppoit. It did not seem possible two months ago that the Chicago convention could attract the attention it Is now receiving. It will really decide whether the Presidential campaign shall be squarely fought bet ween a gold ticket and a silver ticket, or whether there shall be a triangular side of the gold ticket. It doesn't seem to make the slightest difference to those who are fighting to prevent the convention adopting a free silver platform and nominating a silver ticket that nearly two-thirds of the delegates to the convention hare already declared themselves to be silver men. This Isn't complimentary to anybody concerned, but It Is strictly strict-ly true. President Cleveland is making a personal attempt to get the southern delegates to the national convention to abandon the idea of voting for a free coinage platform. He Is sending out large numbers of two personal letters. One of them is addressed to southern men of prominence whom he has met, appealing ta them to give their influence towards preventing t he defeat of the administration by its own party convention. Tills letter goes in strong on southern sentiment and gratitude, and recites what the writer has done for the south during his two terms, mentioning among ether favors bestowed on the south, five Cabinet positions, two Associate Justlcesof tho U. S. Supremo Court, and two Ambassadors. The other letter Is being sent to businessmen in New York and other eastern cities who have Intimate financial relations with the south. In It these eastern capitalists arc urged to notify their southern patrons that If the southern delegates to Chicago persist in voting for the free coinage of silver they need not ask for further financial aid in their business enterprises from eastern east-ern capitalists, and that when their outstanding obligations are due no further extension of time will be given them, but they will be required to settle or suffer the consequences. It remains to be sceu what will be the effect of these two remarkable letters. The silver men are not allowing their opponents to do all the fighting. They are going to have their representative repre-sentative men meet in Chicago next week, a week ahead of the convention, for the express purpose of making an iron clad programme for the convention conven-tion which cannot possibly be upset. Tbe anti-silver leaders are also going to Chicago next week, and thonnlo-convention thonnlo-convention contest promises to be quite as interesting as that which will occur In the convention itself, and may really settle In advance Just what the convention will do. Evcryliody In Washington, republicans, democrats demo-crats and populists alike, are engaged in discussing the possibilities and probabilities of the convention, and there is the widest possible difference I With Hood's Sarsa pa-rilla," pa-rilla," Sales Talk," and Talk show that this medi cine has enjoyed public confidence aud patronage to a greater extent than accorded accord-ed any other proprietary medicine. This is simply because it pos-jesses greater merit and produces greater cures than any other. It is not what we gay, bat what Hood's Sarsaparilla does, that tells the story. All advertisements of., Hood's Sarsaparilla, like Hood's Sarsaparilla itself, it-self, are honest. We have never deceived the public, and this with its superlative medicinal merit, is why the people have abiding confidence in it, and buy Sarsaparilla Almost to the exclusion of all others. Hood & Co., Lowell, Mass. ... are the only pills to take I lOOu S l lilS with Hood's Sarsaparillii. of opinions as to what the outcome will be, That Secretary Teller wil not be the nominee seeurs o be one of the few certainties. A new silver campaign button-has made its appearance. It is a reproduction repro-duction in metal of the ordinary field daisy, with sixteen numbered white petals and a figure one on the yellow center. This button originated In Washington and the designer has applied for a patent. It has been endorsed and adopted by the American Ameri-can Bimetallic League. Those who said before Congress adjourned ad-journed that President Cleveland had a war scare up his sleeve which he would produce whenever he thought it expedient to do so are now more than ever convinced that they Were right. The premature publication of the nature of the repojj which Gen. Fit, Lee, our Consul Gerferal to Cuba, has made to the President upon the condition of affairs in Cuba is what convinced them. It is argued that this report will furnish a basis for the President to act upon, if he be so disposed, dis-posed, and that if he takes any action favorable to the Cubans Spain will be compelled, by public opinion which is already much influenced against us, to declare war against the United States. Meanwhile Gen. Fi tz Lee is in diplomatic hot water. 1 la wrote a letter containing very decided opin ions to a relati'-who made the niK- tiKrrrr 5Trnw!n' rt ttr-a-ncpipe man. Consequently the Spanish minister wants his official sca'p, and according to diplomatic ethics he is entitled to it, but whether he w.ll get it is altogether another thing.
