The Indeiieudeiit is pleased to present it. to its readers as a well prepared address: "Another great cycle of time has rolled round with its swift, vicissitudes vicissi-tudes of change and its inexorable onward on-ward march. To same it has brought happiueiss and success; to others pain and disappoint meut, anil some, alas! who si ai ted on the march full of life and vigor and hope have left the ranks and have to that gre:it bourne, whence no traveler returns. Some after a long life of toil and with the crown of success on their brows, some in the) strength of matured years; some to whom life was opening In all Its beauty, with its rose tinted hues and lofty aspirations, have gone to join the great majority. And Kitneof our number whose lives may be cotn-Idredtolhe cotn-Idredtolhe fragrant, opening tiudi I j of spring- to iheui life as yet had no ; liu-itioun. m.:i uiey, too. nave an swered t lie call of the Great. Master. And new, my friends, as this school year closes, we come before you to takti a glance at what we. as teachers and pupils, in our line of action have tried to accomplish. When we began our work at tbe beginning of the year some of us were placed al a great dis-imaiitage: dis-imaiitage: we were unacraainted, to j a greal cxrent, with the work and ; methods of our iiredecessors. We were to a greater extent umifouainted with tbe pupils with whom we were to (leal and w hom we were fa try to lead to a higher plane of intellectual attainments. And as a farmer must know the comlit ion and adaptat ion of tbesoilbe is to cult ivate before he can be in the highest degree successful!; success-ful!; so must the teacher be thoroughly thor-oughly acquainted with the condition and tendencies of the immortal soul he wishes to culiiv.tte b-forc he can meet with that success which should be the aim of every true teacher. Hut success is a relative term. It implies the accomplishment, of any object from that of a single problem in tbe lesso.i of a schoolboy to the accomplishment accom-plishment of a life work. An architect archi-tect may be said to be successful w lieu he has completed the plan id' a noble edi'.iee. He may be said to be successful success-ful when the cornerstone has been laid; but his success is not perfect until the si met ure stands complete with its beautifully rounded outlines and harmonious proportions. So with the teacher. Though his plan be laid never so perfectly: though his work begins never so well, jet lie cannot claim that highest success which awaits the true, artist teacher, until he sees before him the harmoniously developed life of the child. For that, after all, is the true aim of education. It has been said by one of our local educators that "results" are what is wanted in our school work. He spoke truly. Hut there arc two kinds of results. There are those which show in the pupils remarkable, mechanical skill. He is enabled to repeat all the rules in the arithmetic; to repeat whole cantos of poetry and perform remarkable tricks w itb figures. Then there is another class of results in w hich the reasoning power is developed devel-oped to the same extent as the memory; mem-ory; t he physical and moral parts of bis nature to the same extent as the intellectual part. To attain the latter class of results has been our aim. It has been our effort to present, the studies in a concrete, rather than an abstract form; in an objective rather than a subjective manner. The reason of this is obvious. It does not merely start the child in tbe direction di-rection of new truths and leave him to gronc his way as best he can, but it places him in the right path and shows him the goal to which he may attain by effort. We b.dieve that it is uot so much the aim of school work to give tiie pupil facts as to supply conditions for development along all intellectual lines. Hence we have tried to place before the child for assimilation foundation truths and principles which would lead him to investigate for himself. We think that a knowledge of nature in all its forms is the true basis for education and therefore observation, and science lessons have been a special feature of the primary work which has been continued in the higher grades in the form of plant study, elementary botany, bot-any, domestic science and nature.
