Lobbying is something that is entirely en-tirely out of place if d'ine by the apostles personally but emiin ntl. proper by a committee. All corporations think it necessary to "appoint commit lee', why not the 'Mormon church'" especially whin legislation is to be enacted pcrtainir-g to their schools, t heir churches, their tenant, or in fact, e.ny public measure. meas-ure. If for the benefit, of the, majority, then the church of any chilird community com-munity should lie interested in it and to us, it seen. M.-toiily its ritiht bin its duty to see that (hey have a voice In its framework, and there need be no reason fur anyone to shout "church dictation." Mr. Critchlow, we are glad the church did send a committee to look lifter its interests it. Inoks better than for the First Presidency to go in person It's too bad you have had su'di travail to bring out this fact; we hope you ill recover. WHO ARS THE "CARPET-BAGGERS-" The Enquirer labors asshlimii-ly to demonstrate the undesirability of so much carpet-bagism in Utah. lulls Issue of lust, Friday it contains a well written article on this subject, which has such a pretty application to some of the home, condition-: that we are constrained to ask if they have direct refference to some of their own "have been" pets. Of course A. 1. Gash could not be of this ilk for they recently re-cently patted him on the back most enthusiastically. In the next Issue the. following rather significant paragraph appears: "Vc are informed that some, people are so much dissatisfied with the appointment ap-pointment of Charles DeMolsy as secretary sec-retary of the Asvlum that they are circulating u petition for re-consideration of his appointment. While wo didn't favor his appointment, we thinK it would ho bad taste to press such a petition." Now in Friday's paper is also seen an almost fulsome report of the good qualities of Dr. M. II. Hardy and Mr 11. S. Fyne, the two gentlemen who have been selected to take charge of the Asylum. Nut a word is said of the other two gentlemen who were appointed at the same time Messrs. Chas. DeMo.sy and Jos. T. Farrar. The hitter, whose "early life was spent on the farin",'isa man a man of business training and will be able to supervise aftairs under his hands with tact" and we think is "the right man In the right place" and "has our congratulations. The quest ion arises, ore these two gentlemen carpet-baggers, oftlce-seekers and "sich"? TWO OBSOLETE W0RD3- Apostle Moses Thatcher has the entire en-tire support of the (ientile press of theMate, with the possible execution of the Otfden Press. The foregoing lines were clipped from our near contemporary, the Enquirer, ami are chielly remarkable for their ambiguity as to what is the 'Gentile press", and second, what is ' Gentile". This Is a word which may have meant a great deal in old I'.ibli-caldays, I'.ibli-caldays, or perhaps during the dark ages of the Inquisition, but In this enlightened ago it can have but one meaning, viz., that the Enquirer is the only "Mormon press" in Utah, not even excepting the Deseret News. When! oh when! will that word "Gentile" become obsolete? The editor, or manaar, or publishers of a newspaper do not qualify the paper; of course, we have "church reviews", "political organs", etc., etc.. but that word "Mormon" shocks the average Latter Pay Saint. So also does the word "Gentile" when used as the opposite op-posite of the word "Mormon", and when it comes to Gentile and Mormou press the term Is absolutely Idiotic drivel aud if the reader of a piper had any respect for the paper, such words used In this sense would cause more "stops" from about 40 per cent of their patronage, than any other break made. Out with such words a "Mormon pres" and "Gentile press"! ; TROVO THE PLACE. Every citizen should exert himself to the utmost to undo the mistakes of the past, l'rovo should throw oil that blind bigot ry which says ,i railroad is stihiect to a city, a locality or a central community. The Independent most heartily joins with the people of l'rovo in the hope of their ultimate success, and feels sure that by a united effort on the part of the citizens that success will crown their cndeavois, and that at some early day l'rovo will be a great railroad division point. Indeed, this may be done at any time now, and by taking the opportunity opportun-ity or a warm spell of weather, when the frost Is out of the ground, to plant for the early crop. Then If danger of late fro.-t appears, It is very easy to save the plants by throwing a lilit furrow over them by a hand plow. This may be done anyhow with advantage, as the earthing over the plants will kill myriads of young weeds ' cleaning the ground and encouraging a rapid growth of tho crop. The latter lat-ter planting may be' done in June, while the early planting will he within with-in a month or less of maturity. The lie-,t way to cut seed potatoes is a problem upon which no two farmers agree, and concerning which number-farmer:: number-farmer:: generally, as well a-i by experiment ex-periment station. Results at all the stations have been carefully studied by J. F. Dnggar. who concludes (Farmers' (Far-mers' bullet in No, ?., United States department of agi icullurc) that it Is more "important to cut the tuber into compact pieces of nearly uniform fcize than to so shape the pieces as to have a definite number of eyes on each set. No piece should be entire ly devoid of eyes, and the majority of the seed pieces should be large enough to support sup-port at least two eyes, and better three or more." The j ieid from planting the seed or h i einl is larger than from the stem or butt end oT the tuber, the eyes on the seed end being llrsi. to germinate, germi-nate, and hence of especial importance when an early crop is desired. The total yield increases with every increase in-crease in the size of seed pieces from the single eye to the whole potato; this incieasf occurs both In the large aud in the small potatoes, but chiefly in the latter. The net yield of salable potatoes increases with every increase in the size of seed piece from one eye to the half potato. "The half potato affords a larger net salable cropthan the whole potato. Taking the average av-erage of many experiments, it was found that for every 100 bushels of net salable crop grown from single eyes, there were 114 bushels from two-eye pieces. Kll bushels from quarters and hill bushels from halves, but only 12!) bushels from planting whole potatoes. These results favor the use of halves as seed pieces if seed potatoes and crops are assumed to be of equal value per bushel, but when seed potatoes command a very high price, quarters may he used to advantage, It, Is better bet-ter to place in one hill one larger piece than several very small ones of the same aggregate weight. Small potatoes pota-toes can sometimes be used for seed with profit, in which case they should be planted whole. Leading 'growers are careful to select for seed medium to large tubers of good shap, aud their example should ba followed." Thai Crimpy Cough.
