TERMS OF SUBSCRIPTION. One year, Six months. Three months. 1.00 CHRISTMAS 1335. This is the season of the year that the people of all Christian nations look forward to with feelings of cheerfulness, cheer-fulness, peace and good-will. - It brings to the young r.ew joys, pleasures pleas-ures and hopes; to tin; old, fond memories mem-ories of the past, good feeling in I lie present and renewed hope, for the future. It is very appropriately a season of charity, for it celebrates the anniversary of the birth of Him who performed the most charitable act of .all He who sacrificed himself that the world illicit be saved; and to the Christian it is the day or nays. Many a Christ mas has passed since the people tlrst settled in the mountains moun-tains and valleys of the fairest State on earth, and many of them, no louht, h ive brought their full share if peace and joy, but still there was oinethinif ruis.sin- the people were not free. True, they were not slaves in the common acceptance of the term they had certain privileges and rights (though rarely respveted) a id as individuals could in all reason do a they pleased still they were slaves nr at least vassals, and in that they had not the privilege of govern lug t heniselvcs they were not free. Utah and her people were looked down upon, yea, even despised, by the people peo-ple of the other States, and with each Micceeilimjr year came hope that their frequent appeal for liberty would be granted only for each succeeding Christmas to conic and go, leaving this fair commonwealth still a vassal. That the pen pi a deserved these frequent fre-quent rebukes some contend, and in no far as they were aimed at the church and anti-church contention, they are right-most people will concede. Thing", conditions and opinions have changed, and Chrismas 181)5, sees the family of States making room to receive the new sister Into their midst: the. nation with open arms receives re-ceives fair Utah and grants to her sons and daughters the same privilege privi-lege that the sons of other States enjoy; en-joy; the. people of other States no longer look upon Utah w ith horror, fear, malice or haired, hut are willing, will-ing, even anxious, to extend to her children the hand of good fellowship. Therefore Christmas this year means more to the sons and (laughter of fair Utah than ever it meant before. It has a deeper, fuller, meaning the people are free! and that this liberty of the body of the mind has a close aftiinlty with tho liberty granted by Him who suffered on the cross, no one will deny. It is much easier for a free people to he a good people. Very soon perhaps, before this reaches the public-Utah will he a State, and her people have every reason rea-son to congratulate themselves, and when asking blessing for other things should remember the State in which they live. With statehood comes added responsibilities, and the State l. de pendent upon its own resources. We believe it is perfectly able to take care of Itself, and if its citizens in managing manag-ing Us affairs will keep in mind "peace on earth, good will to all men," the State will have uo rival in the Union. As the day of charity and gift making mak-ing draws near, th well-to-do and those In moJerato circumstances tshould remember that there nre many people In the world, and doubtless some In this city, who are not so fortunate for-tunate as they, and to whom Christmas Christ-mas does not always mean what It should. The slightest present If given Jn the proper spirit and to the right party would caue many a poor family fami-ly to enjoy a real merry Christmas. It, In thb city the.ee Is a svtesuU? MAKE ' STIR" THE WORD. Now that, the time has come a ben the improvement season must closf for a ti in , it would be well for all interested in tho advancement of itrigham to think and plan for an aggressive campaign of improvement 1 in the spring. A place can be no more than iis people make it,. We hope this big hole in the ground just south of this ofllce will be covered by a magnillceiit brick structure next spring, that city water works will be under way, that electric lights will glimmer and scintillate amid the lilooin; that a fine drive shall lie established to the lake via Lake Shore and contiguous towns thereto: that private improvements shall be doubled, yea, trebled, with statehood for our incentive, and the glorious peans of harmony shall arise from the hum of industry and itnprovnient that will emanate from the central city of the earth. Tim American nation will rejoice to learn that President Cleveland has placed his (Inn and unyielding back-It back-It me behind the Monroe doctrine, and ir lie w 111 lion ruu Isr a"" little; vt Ills well-known stubbornness in the matter much will be forgiven. The English call his message the "epitaph of the Monroe doctrine"; they seem to forget that the epitaphs and they are few of American institutions are written In blood instead of ink. British pretensions on this continent have often been drowned in British blood, and if they wish to sink their views of the Monroe doctrine iu the same element no American has any particular objection. If President Cleveland feels his spine weaken at any point in the little game, (55,000,-ooo (55,000,-ooo of Americans will stand ready to support him. Now let Congress recognize recog-nize the struggling Cuban patriots as belligerents, and the United States can adjust matters with Spain and England on the same Held. Wk hope President Rognon of the Utah Press Association will call an early session of the society and adjust a number of thingsthat require attention. atten-tion. The association Is on t he down grade just now on account of the nial-adiniuistrationof the officers who have brought utter discredit on it. We hope stps will soon be taken to expunge all officers and any members who cannot bring the association honor rather than discredit.
