I felt like the Gnnch upon hearing that the Egyptian Theatre Company was kicking ott the 2iXK)-Dl season with a revival of "The Best Christmas Pageant Ever." The compares earlier production produc-tion in the mid-'s was entertaining entertain-ing enough as community theater. But I'm not a fan. especially, of the story by Barbara Robinson, and 1 didn't understand why ETC was stuffing a re-tread in our Christmas stockings. Let it be known, however, that 1 have descended from Mt. Crumpet and am willing to carve the roast beast lor director Jerry Rapier and a cast that have pumped new blood into a not exactly classic story. The setting is an un named Middle American community, where the annual church Christmas pageant faces three problems. ( 1 ) Though they won't admit it. the parishioners are tired of seeing the same ol' boring production pro-duction even year. (2) The pageant's usual director. Mrs. Armstrong, is waylaid in the hospital hos-pital And worst of all (3) the towns worst delinquents, the Herdman kids, have shanghaied the pageant and copped all the best parts. The oldest Herdman. Imogens, is even playing the Virgin Mary, though she's never heard the Christmas story and is "trying to figure out this Christ-born-in-a-manger business." When the time comes to enact the Nativ ity scene. Imogene follows fol-lows in the tradition of Scrooge and the Cirinch she finds herself her-self caught up in the grace and solemnity of Christmas. This potentially-corny switch is made credible, due to the simple, expressive emotion that Mammen brings to the moment, without saying a word. Meanwhile, the youngest Herdman. Gladys, (a boisterous Elia Perkins) is play ing the Angel of the Lord like a hog-calling contestant, and has suggested the play be revamped as a thriller called "Revenge in Bethlehem." Unfortunately, the other Herdmans. (Devin Adair, Dylan Ragland. Vatt Mercereau. and Rebecca Sands) haven't been given much to do. And that may be the problem I have with Robinson's story. Except for suggesting sug-gesting that they're loud, surly and unkempt, the play doesn't use much comic imagination in show -ing why the Herdmans are such unholy terrors. The real spark of the production, produc-tion, as director Rapier has discovered, dis-covered, is in displaying the nerv ous-Nellie reactions of the townsfolk towns-folk to the Herdmans kids skittering skit-tering away in terror, adults rolling their eyes. etc. (His direction direc-tion here is well-paced, except for City No. 1210 IkHnhk' s ek III? In a fairly small role. Kurt Plextor plays husband Bob Bradley as an affable, reliable helpmate, even if his perennial question about the pageant is "Do I hav e to go'.'" As their son Charlie. David Glenn is bombastic and funny. Paige Keiter nicely plays daughter Beth, the narrator who appears to be the most well-adusted person per-son in the play Hav den Vogman goes a vividly cailv performance as the peevish Alice Wendlekcn (she's the one who set her sights on playing the Virgin Mary ).
